Keith Butler is Retiring

Since the Steelers tend to like to give new coordinators and position coaches "welcome aboard" presents, I guess we should look forward to a 1st round pick on the defensive side. I'd prefer DL/ILB if one of the good ones were available. However, they'll be replacing Austin too ... So maybe they'll go DB

Man, you have to look at the results in scheme independent from the offense and realistically. As a whole do folks realize under Buts as DC, the D was ranked top 10 in points or yards allowed 6 of his 7 years? Or Buts and Tomlin if he was calling the defense.

Butler or Butler/Tomlin has been solid, particularly when you look at the sack numbers by the defense over the years. The defense was hurt by the lack of personnel this year. Tuitt never returned. Alualu suffered a season-ending injury. Devin Bush was barely NFL quality. They let Colbert walk for virtually nothing. They traded Nelson for no reason.

The idea of promoting Austin, who has seemed to do a solid job with the secondary, is more philosophical than anything. They aren't even considering finding a better option or bring in new ideas from the outside who could possibly add a new wrinkle to the defensive system. There is way too much comfort in promoting from within for the coaching staff and players.

for a few Years Butler if it was his scheme just modified Leveau's 2-4-5 by using some 3-2-6 and we saw in the past 2 years lots of 4-2-5. If MT wants to run a Tampa 2 the franchise has the cash to get some quality DL, like some good under Tackles who can shoot gaps well and Between Adams and Tyson, you need 1 more 1 T who can occupy 2 blockers. Tuitt can be a great under T with Heyward as NG or a DE and having a heavy 3 DT and 1 Edge (watt ) in 2 pt stance and Highsmith as the standing OLB with Devin and either Joe or a rookie as the other coverage ILB.

Traditional when we ran 3-4 u need 5 DL your 3 starting DL and 2 rotating ends with a 4-3 or combo should be 5-7 unless you have linebackers who can easily slide to the edge like both of ours, then it is your DL we really lacked depth at NG as if we played cam at NG then Wormley who is more of a pass-rushing DT was often washed away as the under tackle. Adams was the only one aside from cam that beat his blocks and got into the backfield, if you retain a DL that is under a contract of
Heyward Tyson Wormley ( can say easily Adams is back on a cheap deal) you need 1 NG to rotate with Cam.
Targets for DL via the draft should be

NG Davis would have the impact of Vita Vea Ngata would make it extra hard for teams to game plan vs us, I have seen and heard that Mean joe at times required tripled teams and he was fine, said if it allowed LV or White to be 1-1 or shoot an easy gap he sacrificed his body, I think Davis will bring fear and great ways for us to allow others to get mismatches.
rookies I am researching at DT
DT Wyatt UGa Under T/DE
NG Leal A & M
NG Mathis
NT Travis Jones Uconn

The dline presence when you require double or triple teams allows the linebackers to carry out the exotic blitz packages which is the strength of a 3-4. TJ Watt and….yes Highsmith would benefit greatly with Davis if he were to end up a Steeler.

They've been **** in the playoffs, though, like historically bad in their last four games.

Austin having a hand in the last two does not invoke a lot of confidence going forward.

Under Butler, they've had some decent defenses, but 2019 was the only one I felt really good about throughout the season.

Butler was never really the DC. Everyone pretty much knows that. No good DC will come here unless they get something in writing that they will actually be the DC and not a scapegoat for Tomlin. This will just be a "yes sir" promotion from within unless Rooney gets involved. We all know he won't just like he won't with Canaduh.

How the convo went…
Enter scene: Man with extremely Cool Shades picks up his phone and makes call…a few moments later beleaguered looking man (Butler) enters the Shaded man’s room

Cool Shades: Obviously it’s been a rough year, fans are out with pitchforks calling for someone’s head, luckily they blinked and we narrowly escaped while they were all watching Ben’s retirement party

Butler: Is this going somewhere? Or is this like our offense?

Cool Shades: Easy, I really like where Matt is headed. He has a bucket of brown paint and he’s painting that barn over and over and a few more coats I’m sure it will be red…he hasn’t blinked once through all those coats of brown paint. He just keeps making them defend every blade of grass, especially the ones near the line of scrimmage.

Butler: What the hell?

Cool Shades: We seemed to really be on fire that game you weren’t here. I was really able to call a game when I wasn’t busy having to manipulate the strings of my puppet…so I’m gonna ask if you could do us a solid and retire because there has to be a change and obviously with my pedigree I’m the only thing keeping this together so why don’t ya do Matt and me a solid and just retire?

Butler: I work here? Thought I just had excellent seats
