Looks like we lost Najee and Watt for the year but I hope not.

Fire Coach Tomlin?!?!?
I know that you're being facetious, but how did you like Tomlin's decision to throw the ball late in the game (with a pattern that had about a 1% chance of getting a first down even if completed), instead of forcing the Bengals to use a timeout in that situation?

yes, that's true. it only took 7 sacks, 5 bengals turnovers, their qb playing arguably the worst game of his young career to date, a miracle blocked extra point, and an entire overtime period. but yes, you're correct, the Steelers are 1-0.
It took what the team provided. They won the game. Against what nearly everyone in the country expected. More people expected the Steelers to get blown out than expected them to win.

Are you sure that was Tomlin's decision? I thought Canada called the plays.
Throwing the ball wasn't the issue. The selected pattern was.

Did the Steelers not make great plays in forcing those 5 Bengals turnovers and recording those 7 sacks? Did the defense not play much better than most of us expected, against a very good opponent? Did the Bengals not make a 59-yard field goal earlier in the game to even have an opportunity to win the game in regulation?

It was 2nd and 14. You try to get some of that back to make it a manageable 3rd down. The receiver was open for it, the LB made a great play knocking it down.

Sometimes the other team does good things, too.

Tomlin absolutely makes the decision whether or not to run or pass the ball late in the game there. Of course he does.

Canada calls the plays, but Tomlin is control of clock management near the end of halves and games. The defense was playing well all day; you have to force the Bengals to try and win the game against them with zero timeouts left. I guess Canada was trying to complete a "safe" pass in that situation, but it totally backfired.

Actually it was 2nd-and-12, a situation making it even more unlikely that they were going to get a first down, and thus they should have simply run it up the middle and kept the clock moving.

I know. And with the struggles they were having on offense, I agree. But I see what they were trying to do. Go win the game and not give the Bengals the ball again. One first down does it I would think. I would have preferred they never got the ball back. You kind of felt it coming, with Burrow and Chase. That's a good QB and WR over there. I don't care how good you are on defense, that kind of talent will find a way eventually.

I was not happy with the decision...

I think Heyward was tired but did anyone else think he put on some pounds during camp? It almost looked like he beefed up to play more NT. Maybe it was just the white jerseys.
I thought it was Casey out there a few times. The dude is just FAT now.🙂

When we got the ball the last time and started throwing. I was thinking just run the ball and take a tie we had no reason of having. In the end we got a win we had no reason of having. Glad I was wrong.

Fortunately, how a team plays in week 1 is rarely indicative of how tgey will be playing by a quater of the season in, much less by seasonS end

Remember, in 95 we were 3-4 and had opened up the offense trying to compensate for losing Woodson…things finally clicked in week 8 and we didn’t lose again until a meaningless final game against green bay… and ultimately in the super bowl… how we looked early in the season had little to do with the end

Update from Rapsheet. Probably won't know for sure on Watt until tomorrow. Najee did reagrevate his lisfranc injury. They are doing more tests to see if there is something else there. https://fb.watch/fvaFsW8ONZ/

Agree w/your first point, but in this case, the Steelers look exactly the same on offense that they have for the last 2-3 years. If you look at this matchup just on the stats, it's clear who the better team is. Bengals had over 400+ yds on offense to 260+. 75 rushing yards at 3.4 per? That's exactly what we are used to. 194 pass yds, 9 per. Same garbage. Until this team can compete offensively, get out of the stone age, it's another 8-9 wins as a ceiling. Back in 95, you could play that way, but these days, you have way too many offenses that aren't stuck in the mud. Luckily, they'll play one next week though. Two coaches stuck in the defensive mindset. Believe me, you'll see a 20-17 game going either way.

Schefter just tweeted… “Tests today on Steelers’ RB Najee Harris’ foot injury came back negative and there is a belief that, according to a source, he “should be good to go” Sunday vs. the Patriots.”

I guess he’s not done for the season. 🙄

I’m surprised Bengals fans aren’t here mocking our “victory”. We should be embarrassed by yesterday’s “win”.

Would you take 12 more victories like that and a trip to the AFC Championship? A SB?
A frickin win is a win.

A few on the Bungles board gave credit to the Steelers D.
This bungle fan however took a lot of flak.

Why, more often than not, do the Cincinnati Bengals turn into milquetoast wimps and allow the Steelers’ defense to beat them up on the playground for lunch money?

I’ve been watching the same scenario for decades and I’m sick of it. Why does the Bengals’ offense just take it? More important, why can’t the Bengals’ defense do that too?

I know the NFL desires a high scoring television-friendly game. With that said there’s a lot to be said for a shutdown defense; the Bengals’ defense played technically well today — props to Lou Anarumo — but Pittsburgh is going to win a lot of games playing their punishing style of defense. Every hit they make is jarring, they throw players around, and they intimidate.

The Steelers’ defense scared Joe Burrow today. They made Ja’Marr Chase look tentative. I haven’t seen that since the 2021 preseason.

Maybe Zac Taylor should have played the first team offense in preseason. It shows poor judgment to put the first team out there in Week One with minimal contact and especially against the Steelers.

Talking about injuries, when did the Bengal's long snapper get hurt? Totally messed up their kicking game. If they couldn't get a TD in OT, they weren't going to win unless we gave it to them.

Which we didn't do. For all those complaining about MT2, he didn't turn it over and there were some pretty amazing receptions. Back in the day I would have compared him to O'Donnell in that he rarely cost us games by throwing the ball up for grabs or taking excessive chances (except the fn Super Bowl) but to Neil's credit, at least he had a hell of a running game to fall back on. It is what it is and I'll take that win, enjoy it, and look forward to the next game.
