Making Lemonade from Lemons

I wonder what oc or DC would be interested in working under McCarthy. Does anyone have any names to bandy about?

More than likely.

I have no faith in anything Rooney does.

There is no desire for greatness.

It IS a QB driven league
100%
If he desired to be great there would at a minimum be an ATTEMPT to address the glaring QB need on the roster. Not some 45 year old retreads or 6th round flyer/after thought…take some effing swings *******.

A team should be drafting 1-2 QBs every year until they have the answer. Wait til next year does not work. Retreads and duct tape aren’t an answer.

Last year everyone said wait til next draft, that’s where the QBs are…now next year gets here and people saying the same silly thing.

If your team doesn’t have a QB- like Pittsburgh
If your team won’t go get the top FA- Pittsburgh
Then ya damn well better start drafting 1-2 a year until ya find your guy.

There are QBs in every draft
Just have to poke around and find one you can fit/tailor a system to.

We sat for years in GHD and the second we get a new HC many are clamoring to run it back geriatric style and go for 9-8 again?!?!

They need to at least start attempting to find the answer…quick hint- it sure ain’t Aaron

That's a great point. The advantage of having GOAT back though is Howard gets one more year of the best tutor anyone in the NFL could have.
While true, you still won't know what you have in Howard and with a potentially deeper QB class you'd enter the draft planning on taking one in the first round anyway.

A perk with Willis is if he gets them into the playoffs but has an average season, sweet. Maybe you learn he isn't a long-term option, so his contract also wouldn't deter the Steelers from taking a QB high in the 2027 draft.

I'm hoping we let Rudy go. I didnt want him back anyway. He's proven he's nothing more than a guy who can give you a few series of good play before reverting to turtle ball and panic.

Assuming we let Rudy go and do not bring back RoDgers:
we have Howard and Skylar Thompson on roster. IMO, Thompson played some damn good ball in preseason, but it was preseason. In this situation (minus RoDgers and Rudy), we'd need to bring in another FA QB and look at the draft. Ideally we do NOT draft a QB high. Not at all. The only two guys I'd look at are Haynes King (late, very late) and Trinidad Chambliss (mid rounds). Both of those guys are similar to what we already have on roster with Howard and Thompson, so the offense wouldn't change much at all with young and mobile QBs. The only FA QB I'd really look at is Trey Lance. He's just 26 and if McCarthy can develop a QB, then he'll have three young guys to develop in Lance (26), Howard (24) and a draft pick QB. Thompson is 29, and that's not too old for a QB.

You don’t like Willis? I thought he did well albeit a short body of work..

This is what im sayin.

I saw a post - that I'll paraphrase and clean up a bit - "Trading Tomlin for McCarthy is like crapping your pants and then changing your shirt".
how come? one is a specialist on Offense and the other has zero knowledge of anything x & o. Rather get the one that at least masters one side of the game

And that there is exactly why you bring in a bad stopgap QB that is easily benched, not Rodgers.

What's the difference between "easily benched" and "easily injured" in the scheme of things?

Well... I don't look just one season

Well, I don't look just one season at a time and hope to catch lighting in a bottle. That's basically the Tomlin way it just sucks.

And if they keep trying that, you better damn well hope it backfires and something good comes out of it.
If we look at Seattle and NE they did it right. They got lucky that it was quick. But they did it right.

From AI:
Mike McCarthy utilizes a "Texas Coast" offense, a variant of the West Coast scheme focusing on timing, rhythm, and quick horizontal passing to stretch defenses, often featuring high-volume early-down passes and West Coast staples like slant/flat combos. Key passing concepts include:
  • West Coast Passing Concepts: High use of slant-flat combinations to attack man coverage, curls, and quick-out routes, designed to get the ball out quickly to receivers in space.
  • The Mills Concept: A staple in his passing game combining a deep post with a shallow crossing route to attack both intermediate and deep areas.
  • Quick Game & Pick Routes: Emphasizes quick-game concepts that require fewer reads, often incorporating pick and crossing routes to create separation for receivers.
  • Tight End Usage: Integrates tight ends heavily into the passing game as key weapons rather than just safety blankets.
  • RPOs and Play Action: Utilizes play-action passing and Run-Pass Options (RPOs) to complement a run-game focus.
  • Pre-Snap Motion: Uses motion to identify coverages and stress defenders, often in combination with quick-game passing.
McCarthy's philosophy relies on quick passing to reduce sacks and move the chains, prioritizing early-down passing efficiency.

that in itself is way better than what we had. If we get 4 slants per game and 4 TE targets down the seam that already is a huge improvement over mediocre Mike (Tomlin)

Hard to imagine there is a happier player about the change at coach than Freiermuth, given how frustrated he reportedly was with his lack of targets in the Texans game and throughout the season in general.

Another potential "Tomlin hostage" situation was averted.

I'm going to weigh in on Ty Simpson because I've watched ask of his film and game day play.

Leader - check
Tough - check
Clutch - no
Mobile - above average
Arm strength - mid tier
Awareness - mid trending downward

NFL comparison - Kenny Pickett

I rest my case. Pass.

I’m going to weigh in on Ty Simpson as well.

He should grow a mustache.

NFL comparison - Rudy.

Yes, a very small body of work against some of the worst defences in the League. Willis also appears to have ball security issues when you look at number of fumbles relative to time actually played and his sack numbers are also high for the number of pass attempts (1 sack in every 6.2 pass attempts career, 1 sack in every 8 pass attempts at Green Bay).

Willis may be worth a look-see on a 1-2 year backup contract, given what else is out there, but I think he is Justin Fields lite and Willis stats are boosted by spot duty in a good team against poor defences. Maybe with MCarthy, a competent OC with a decent scheme and another WR1/2 to go with Metcalfe, Willis could become a serviceable starter, but I wouldn't like to see the Steelers get into a bidding war if other teams think Willis could be more.

No offense, but that might be the most spine chilling QB room ever assembled...

Shedeur, Deshaun, Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett all say hello.
