McCullers

Haslett's comments could be taken as EITHER Haynesworth didnt have the ability OR he didn't want to. Knowing the ****-up that Haynesworth is, and the bullshit he's pulled in the past, I'd think it's more due to not wanting to. This was discussed in other incarnations of the board, too, and it was accepted that Haslett was being PC.

Henderson was thrust into the 3-4 during the twilight of his career. Twice. I'll give you that point. But, had he been at NT earlier...pure speculation on anyone's part, but I believe he could have done it. Stroud, too. But when you have Henderson and Stroud on the same team, at the same time, putting both those monsters at T in the 4-3 isn't difficult to comprehend as both require double teams.

Every time he was in they ran the ball to the other side. If he can get in shape, he's going to help our linebackers get pressure.

Joe

I watched him on one play push the center back like grocery cart, even after the QB took off out of the pocket. I thought he was takin' the man to the woodshed.

"Square peg into round hole" isn't an ambiguous phrase; it has a definite meaning. It means "wrong tool for the job," not "doesn't try hard enough."

Not really. I guess it's speculation, like "Did Dri Archer ever line up at h-back in college?" There's just no evidence that he ever did, and common sense dictates he would've only done it for a few snaps at most. Henderson played on a team that exclusively ran a 4-3 for all eight of his seasons in Jax. He then spent two years for the 4-3 Raiders. I get what you're proposing: that maybe the Jags ran a three-man front for a play or two per game and Henderson sometimes found himself in the middle. Sure, it's possible. But that's kinda like assuming Cam Heyward could play 4-3 DT because I'm sure he possibly lined up there once or twice with us.

But that's not even the issue. The question was, how many TRUE 3-4 NOSES were ultra-tall like Henderson or Haynesworth or Stroud? Not a guy who MAYBE, possibly, speculatively, perhaps kicked inside for 5-10 career snaps. True 3-4 noses. And as I mentioned, Henderson was immediately cut from both teams who were switching to 3-4s. So was Haynesworth. I don't think it's a coincidence that these All-Pro studs - and they were definitely studs - just "lost it" or "ran out of gas" at the EXACT moment their teams coincidentally tried them at 3-4 nose.

Given McCullers is only a 7th-round talent, and his college tape shows a SERIOUS tendency to stand upright, I'm not banking on him being a 3-4 nose. There are some positions super-tall guys just don't work out 99% of the time, just like some positions where short guys don't work.

given that right now even the 3-4 is being played as a hybrid, then why not play McCullers there?

There isn't anything holding McCullers back from being able to play at NT other than playing lower. Maybe he should go look at some film of Kris Jenkins or Ted Washington who were 1 1/2" shorter than him at 6'-5" and played in more than a few pro-bowls at NT.

Hell, we even brought in Kimo von Oelhoffen (6'-4") to play NT after Steed started to show wear. He started there just fine until we drafted the future "Big Snack".

People get hung up on the prototype for the NT position. It is typical of guys who have a short stature and a big frame to be able to get 'under' their blocks and drive them back into the pocket. It is NOT the JOB of a NT to draw double-teams. Never has been. It IS his job to control the middle while driving the OC into the backfield to disrupt plays. A by-product of doing it well IS the ability to draw the double-team. (even better)

NTs like Jenkins and Washington often racked up sacks and tackles because they weighed 375# and could push their blockers into the backfield.

Casey said it himself that IF he showed teams enough that he would wreak havoc in their backfield, they would have to respond by putting an extra guy on him. That's what he did. WHEN it happens (double-team), as a NT, you are THEN expected to 'hold your ground' at the least. This allows the LB who the 2nd guy would otherwise be blocking, to be free to make the tackle.

Having Casey here for as long as we did, the responsibility seemed to 'morph' into his "job" being to draw doubles to allow LBs to make tackles when, in essence, it is just a by-product of having a really good NT who would be making them himself all day if you didn't double him.

Good stuff keslerclan, hope we got a real steal with McCullers, it would soften the hurt of busts like Jarvis, Archer, Hood, ,etc.

Damn Supe, lol.

Superman out here throwing virtual hooks:

Supe's jizzrag chiming in, no doubt because of all the times idioteque has hurt his feelings smacking him around the boards:cool:

Yeah, that's the response I was expecting.

Name some more 3-4 NTs for us. Like Aaron Smith.

yeah, that's exactly what I said. I said Aaron Smith was a NT, where? I said we moved him inside more. That's what I said. Don't twist it into something it's not just so you can pound out some more bullshit.

Oh, LOL. I didn't know you'd made that stupid claim. I used Aaron as a silly example to match your Haynesworth/Henderson claims.

How about Rod Woodson? He's about as much of a NT as Haynesworth was.

I did say we played Aaron Smith a lot more inside towards the end of his career than at End. That can't be disputed.

oh, wait, are you ... stalking me? isn't that what you whine and cry about when I mention your pathetic ***?

All I did was respond pretty quietly and respectfully to your (silly) claim about Haynesworth. You, right on cue, got all pissy and compounded your wrongness with a smug, ****** attitude. This is how you respond when called out. If you hate my goddamn conversation so much, put me on ignore. Or fake ignore, like that one guy does.

To quote a famous film: if my answers frighten you, then you should cease asking scary questions. To paraphrase: maybe just stop being smug in your random, wrong bullshit.

We'll talk about "stalking" if I start following you onto other boards to talk NBA smack in ten years.

Like I've said before, ************, I've not "stalked" you onto other boardS. You've yet to provide a shred of evidence. Just as I could state, factually, that you lack genitalia. Until it is proven otherwise, you're a goddamn eunuch. My apologies for jumping out ahead of you in your need to belittle people while trying to come off as intelligent. You just come off as a smug ******** lacking the ability or concept to be anything but a smug ********. My comment regarding the website having spreadsheets, etc, was more in tune with you finding some obscure websites with "advanced analytics" to prove a point (when later those "advanced analytics" are proven to be nothing more than some other 3-foot tall eunuch troll watching games (something you've admitted you do not do, so I don't really know why you'd bother coming on the board to argue, anyway).

If you're going to the Monday Night game vs the Titans, since you live in Tennessee, I'll let you buy me a beer. Which I doubt you'll do since that would require leaving the basement and watching a game.

I've not tracked IP addresses or called CSI, no, LOL. I have nobody to provide "evidence" to. We both know the facts.

My apologies for jumping out ahead of you in your need to belittle people while trying to come off as intelligent.

Whom do I "belittle" that hasn't been a douche to me first? I really think you're just reading my posts and building them into whatever you want them to be. I don't think of myself as some mystic NFL oracle. Hell, I've only watched half our games this year.

Stop reading so damned much into my posts. **** you're insecure. You're like a teenage girl trying to tell if her boyfriend's text was sarcastic.

This doesn't make sense. If I live in "the basement" then wouldn't I be watching the game excessively?

I need to just start copy/pasting "Goddamn you're bad at this"

Lol Jarvis and Archer are already busts?

Jarvis is on the way to becoming one, he is a first round pick that no one seems to notice is gone compared to the guys that have replaced him who are a in the twilight of their football days or have not been kept by the other teams they played for and are just guys. Archer looks like he may be what all the guys against the pick were saying as he has not done much this season yet. I would like to see a splash play or two but have expected something more than he has shown.

I actually have more hope for archer at this point than Jones.

Now, about McCullers....

What about him............. I'd like to read your take on him. I think he should be starter or in starter like rotation.

Salute the nation

For now just tell him to plow straight ahead into whoever is in front of him. That would be more pass rush than we've been seeing.

Like has been said on here, even if he can't find the quarter back having him in the backfield will be something new. We have been rushing Jarvis who can not seem to get there unless unblocked.
