Mike Tomlin

One radio talker claimed some teams already contacted Pittsburgh about Tomlin, what a trade might look like. He walked it back a little. Perhaps he wasn't supposed to say anything.

Watch games between other teams and it’s easy to see that a lot of them have offenses that are light years ahead of the Steelers.

This is obviously out of our control but if Art II does indeed extend Tomlin he should at the very insist on revamping his coaching staff and providing him with a list of potential OC’s to hire.
None of this bs of promoting Faulkner or Sullivan.
Also provide a list of DC’s to hire to replace Austin.
Take some control away on player personnel. Omar and Andy need to be more in control.
These moves may force Shades to step away because his enormous ego may get in the way.
Oh well’

I don't hate Mike Tomlin the person but Mike Tomlin the coach ******* sucks, and I am so sick of this non losing season **** I can't ******* stand it. I will be the first to admit I was hoping to lose out the rest of the year for a couple of reasons. first we get a pick probably around 11 or so and second we get rid of the non losing season bullshit.

I am kind of confused by Tomlin supporters are you Ok if we never sniff the playoffs or win a playoff game ever again as long as we finish with a non losing season? I know why Rooney is ok with it, hell he gets richer and richer off these non losing seasons, but what do the Tomlin supporters get? Bragging right for not making the playoffs and non losing season.
Well first off I try to be the eternal optimist. Second I obviously see things through a different lens than some. I fell Tomlin has overachieved many of these years considering the lack of depth and injuries. I don’t see what we have done as underachieving at least based on the way I see it. I also do think the overachieving has kept us in a position to have to overachieve.
I just have a hard time buying into this premise. At one point he had a defense with 9 starters who were 1st or second round picks, an offense with generational talents at QB, RB and receiver and he did next to nothing with them. He's had talent, he's just never been able to build a team that could take advantage of it.
talent but no depth. As this year has shown league wide depth is key. Teams with huge QB salaries have less.

It’s more disappointing seeing talent being wasted.

He lets divas be divas because they can. But there comes a point when those antics divide a locker room.

Reel ‘em in when they are early in their career and help them realize that their career shouldn’t be taken for granted.

It’s a shame to see guys like AB, Martavis Bryant and possibly George Pickens throwing away potential.

Despite the hard work, these things just need to be given a proper direction.

Things I’d like to see…

1) Tomlin with a damn clipboard and actively involved in the game.

2) Tomlin actually use his time outs. How many times did he have 2-3 timeouts left before halftime and he saved them like they were Reese’s peanut butter cups.

3) Tomlin stop with his stupid word salads and acting like we should thank the other team for our *** kicking.

even though I respect your opinion and your optimism I just don't see how having only 4 years out of 16 not (counting this year} with a playoff win is overachieving. That's 12 years out of 16 without a playoff victory with some very good teams. But hey that's just the way I personally see things.

1. Skip the clipboard. Hands completely off the offense, the whole no turnovers > scoring sucks. Bring in a real DC, sacks and turnovers isn't a recipe for consistent success.
2. He's probably not used to having them for how many our offense wastes.

The depth/injuries thing goes hand-in-hand. Every NFL team has injuries. Some have the rosters to overcome injuries, some don't. The Steelers have been in the latter category. Finally, the lack of depth is at least partially, and likely significantly, his fault. The coach decides who makes the roster and who is on the active roster on game day. All of that belongs to just one guy.

Finally, the simple fact is that Tomlin does not get the most out of his roster. He has had some loaded rosters but since 2008 always - ALWAYS - loses to equal or better teams and VERY often loses to inferior teams.

What team doesn't have divas? And which coach out there is in control of the divas? Our focus is so much on the Steelers, but let's look at it. Jalen Hurts was complaining after Monday night that the Eagles have some people that aren't committed as much. This is a 10-4 team that has lost 3 in a row with a coach I have read on here a number of you would love to have. On a side note, I'm in Eagles country. You ought to hear the Eagles fans...they don't adjust, the offense is doing the same things week after week and expects different results, the defense got exposed in the Super Bowl and they haven't adjusted...sound familiar? They have an idiot WR that throws his hands up when things don't go his way.

How about Jacksonville. They have divas? Have lost 4 in a row and their guy is supposed to be a generational QB. He's also complaining about lack of commitment. They have the same record as the Steelers, and if they screwed up the QB pick, that was #1 overall. Pickett was #20. There are always misses in the 20s. I'd actually rather be in the Steelers situation there.

The Bills. They are playing better now, but Diggs is a missed throw away from blowing his top. Is he a controlled diva?

I could probably keep going. I really think in today's NFL it is whichever coach can keep their collection of 14 year olds focused most from week to week will be most successful. As we sit here it right now it seems that would be Harbaugh in Baltimore in the AFC and Shanahan in San Fran with the Niners. There are still 2 weeks left in the season. Which player on which team didn't get his asss kissed enough over Christmas and is ready to melt down. We'll see. I really feel like most coaches are just hanging on when it comes to this.

This is not a for or against Tomlin thing. This is a general observance of young people that I have developed after over 30 years of working in that arena. A lot has changed...a LOT, and I don't know if many of us older heads recognize it.

It’s not just the nfl. It’s the current generation.
A lot has changed and yes the older generation doesn’t recognize it. I’ve been saying this actually for quite some time. Things are not going to change as far as rules, personalities etc go. The nfl is changing/evolving and it’s something we’re not used to

I’ve already said these guys do not care about legacy and tradition. They make way too much money these days to worry about that. I have to say I don’t blame them either. Make the big contract and retire in a relatively healthy manner.

I work with a lot of young kids as well and my observation is they do the bare minimum. They don’t break their back, etc. They do just enough to stay afloat.

I remember playing sports when I was young. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some satisfaction if I played well but the team lost. But after I thought about it some, there would be guilt there. "We lost, it means nothing that you played ok." I just overheard a kid the other day...they lost their basketball game but he said, "I was the high scorer, that's all that matters." He said it out loud, and no other kid batted an eye. It is emblematic of where we are. And these are just average kids. It's probably worse among the best of the best, who have had their assses sniffed since they've been about 12.

But you weren’t paid millions regardless of outcome.

Those padded stats are performance bonuses and endorsement deal offers by apparel companies. Nike, adidas, under armour want the athlete with the next level stats + the diva attitude to market to the kids and fans who buy that merchandise up

And those are the same type of employees that over the years couldn't understand why they didn't get the same pay raises at their annual performance evaluation as the ones that hustled all year. Subject for another thread, but they've always been there, perhaps more so today.

A lot? I'd say nearly ALL if not ALL. Tomlin is a simple man and as a HC wants a simple offense, one that is scared to death of turnovers, 1st and foremost.

It's who Shades is, Bradshaw was 100% correct when he said all Tomlin was was a cheerleader and he wondered what else he contributed. I'm not a real big Bradshaw fan of the later day, but he was dead on on his Shades' take.

Figued I would dreadge up an older Tomlin thread instead of starting a new one. Now I haven't watched much football for a while now except for Steeler games. I actually have watched a few this season. A handful or so. Coaching is abysmal. I am watching the Eagles game and their coaching is putrid. Maybe Tomlin isn't as bad as we all think. That said I think his time ran out a few yers ago or more.....but props to him for getting that above .500 thing and getting us into the playoffs. Hopefully we don't get trounced next week. Win or lose I just want a see us play a competitive game.

I don't think anyone thinks Tomlin is a bad football coach and generally recognize him as one of the best in the NFL. It's more that he has run his course in Pittsburgh because he hasn't produced in the postseason. He can begin to change that narrative this year with a win next week.
