If the trend of continuing to draft QBs is the plan, why not get creative with now (as in the present?) If Howard is not the answer, move him. Reading the tea leaves, Allar was picked awfully high. If Howard or Allar end up on the practice squad, they may get claimed. This move allows you to free up some cap space and possibly, eventually move Highsmith. I would think he commands at least a second. It could be mutually beneficial to both parties involved. Alex could get a pay bump for his last year and an extension. His new team gets one season to one and a half years of affordability plus his on-field play. The Steelers get depth, potential and a second or better. Regarding Thibodeaux, you’d need to have a pre-negotiated deal hammered out before the trade. It’d be a prove-it extension. Think two years on top of this year which is his fifth. With the structure, Thibodeaux’s extension would overlap with Sawyer’s rookie deal and you’d really figure out who deserves that next contract. Hypothetically, something like this would make it worth your while
Even if you don’t immediately move Highsmith, it gives you the flexibility to do so at the deadline. Guys can work on improving technique, get healthy and everything ends up copacetic. Your starter is locked up till the deadline. At that point, ideally, Highsmith would return premium capital if a contender is in need. The numbers may need massaged. I’m pretty certain there’s not enough capital to go around. If the plan is to continually draft QBs, it’s a thought.
