NASCAR 2018 Thread

Looks like the France family, after doing all they can to destroy NASCAR, wants out. They made their billions. NASCAR is for sale.

NASCAR is dying and they have no idea how to save it. I heard Lowes is pulling the plug on the #48 car sponsorship.

90% of the big names are gone and nobody cares about the newcomers. It's dead Jim.

Its not dead, its just not what it once was. I admittedly lost most of my interest when Earnhardt Sr died, but the last few years I tried to watch it when nothing else was on. Last night I turned it on at 60 laps to go and literally fell asleep halfway through. I think the generation that eat, drank and breathed auto racing is whats dying, because you see it in just about every type of auto racing. I see it in drag racing too.

Eh, I think there was a bit of a lull when Foyt, Pearson, Yarbrough, etc. retired until folks got used to the new drivers in the 80's. Petty hung on a little longer but wasn't a force in his last years.
 
Think drivers will ever be replaced by robots or maybe no robots just self driving cars.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon will headline the 2019 NASCAR Hall of Fame class that includes three former drivers and two current car owners.

The four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, who ranks third on the all-time list with 93 career victories, was named on all but two of the 57 ballots cast and will be enshrined Feb. 1 along with former drivers Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki and car owners Jack Roush and Roger Penske.

The only surprising element of Gordon's selection was it was not unanimous. Each of the 57 panelists (which includes one combined online fan vote) votes for five of the 20 nominees. The five nominees who appear on the most ballots earn induction into the Hall.

Gordon (96 percent of votes) was followed by Roush (70 percent), Penske (68 percent), Allison (63 percent and Kulwicki (46 percent). The next top vote-getters were Buddy Baker, Hershel McGriff and Waddell Wilson.

Kulwicki earned the 1992 Cup title, capturing the grass-roots spirit of the sport as a driver who also owned his own car. He died in a plane crash on the way to the race at Bristol in 1993. He nearly made the 2018 class, having tied Ron Hornaday Jr. on the initial vote but then losing when the entire panel re-voted to break the tie.

Allison, son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison, won 19 races in 191 career starts. He died at age 32 in a helicopter crash at Talladega, a little more than three months after Kulwicki.

Roush, co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing, has owned cars since 1988 with 137 wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. He has won Cup titles as an owner with Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch and won titles in all three national series.

Penske not only made his name as a successful team owner but also as a track owner in the 1990s. His Cup teams have won 108 Cup races since 1972 as well as the 2012 title with driver Brad Keselowski.

The five-member class will be the 10th in the history of the Hall, which opened in 2010. NASCAR did not announce percentages of votes for its initial class (Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson), just saying none were unanimous. David Pearson (2011 class) and Robert Yates (2018) each earned 94 percent of the vote.

Drivers are eligible in the third year after their retirement, at age 55 (contingent on 10 years of NASCAR racing) or after 30 seasons of NASCAR competition. Gordon retired after the 2015 season, and NASCAR did not count Gordon's eight races in 2016 as a substitute for Dale Earnhardt Jr. against him when determining his eligibility.

The voters also selected former track president and public relations executive Jim Hunter for the 2019 Landmark Award for contributions to the sport.

Hell of a good finish this week. Bumping and banging yet nobody wrecked. Larson with an amazing bit of driving and still finishes 2nd. This is the kind of stuff that makes people want to watch.

Very exciting but I still feel Busch is a jerk for taking Lawson out,no matter what Lawson says about not being upset

Eh, Larson hit him first. Thing is, if it had been the other way around, Busch would be crying like a baby. Not a fan of the Busch brothers but that was just good hard racing.
 
I've actually watched a little NASCAR this season for the first time ever. I like that Chevy started running the zl1 this year. It makes me feel like I have horses in the race..

That will make it even more fun! Now if I could only make some friends at the Daytona track who would let me run my blue monster all out id be a happy camper. It's on my list of things I've always wanted to do being so close to that track all of these years.

Harvick should have won 8 races this year. Crazy.

This year it seems like it's pretty much going to be Kyle Busch, Harvick, and Truex who will win every week. Kinda like F1 which I'm watching on DVR now, where the top of leader board is just the same five guys in different spots every week.

Jim France needs to drive the bus.

The 73-year-old brother of the late Bill France Jr., Jim France has spent his life working mostly behind the scenes. But after his nephew, Brian France, stepped aside from his role as NASCAR chairman and CEO a day after he was arrested New York for aggravated driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance (oxycodone), Jim France now finds himself in charge.

And France needs to be in charge.

For the last few years, it’s felt like NASCAR has been a runaway train, bus, plane, whatever you want to call it, without a clear direction and leader. Just spinning its wheels year after year, race after race. As Kyle Busch would say, everything is great.

Sure, everyone knew that Brian France was in charge, but he was hardly seen at the track, and considered unapproachable when he was present. On the few occasions that he spoke the media, he could come off as confrontational while offering views on the state of the sport that were in direct contrast to numbers and opinions of others within the garage.

But now Brian is gone; maybe permanently, maybe not. Whatever the case, Jim France and the rest of the France family have been presented with the opportunity to turn the black eye Brian has given the sport into a positive.

Jim France needs to be the exact opposite of his nephew, and it must start this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. France should get out in the garage, show interest and engagement with the competitors, media, and fans, and in doing so, indicate that he will not hide from this situation and his responsibilities.

More, France should shine a light on the road ahead and his intentions by giving the media the opportunity to hear directly from him. Again – no hiding. Be the leader the sport needs right now and a source of optimism for everyone worried about its future.

Being in charge with no timetable is a fluid situation, except that Jim France can hit the ground running because he’s been here. For those who are less familiar with Jim France – he co-owns the sport with Lesa France Kennedy, and a leadership role where he is involved in decision-making is not new to him.

That said, there is no need for a get-up-to-speed period. France now has the title that gives him more power and a more significant voice in what will go on from here forward.

France might have fresh ideas that are much-needed, considering he now controls a sport that has been in ratings and attendance decline for years. Will he take them more seriously than others have and give them the attention they need?

France is also likely to hear the continued debate about the proposed 2019 rules package (aka the All-Star Race package) to be used in select events. Does France say the series is moving forward with that, or change course?

Those will just be some of the immediate issues likely crossing his desk. Or at least, they should be. Before the sport can move forward, someone has to make sure the bus is going in the right direction.

If there’s any bright side to this ordeal, Jim France is his own man with his own ideas, some of which mightn’t have made it out of the boardroom. Yet.

Brian France embarrassed an already-struggling NASCAR this week. His uncle now has the chance to revive it.
 
Good racing last night at Darlington. Throwback night. Stands were pretty full.
 
This weekend should be very interesting. I never imagined they would come up with a concept like the roval. Should be fun for the fans.

Watching now. Looks interesting. Most years I'm at this race but my bud forgot to order the infield passes in time. With the road course about half the infield camping is gone so the camping passes they had got sucked up fast.
