Native Americans Want Redskins Name Back

5/8 Cherokee and I could give two ***** what any team calls itself. you are a weak person if a slang name bothers you that bad. People tend to forget we were not allowed to use the white bathroom, drinking fountain or restaurants either.

It’s virtue signaling. These dipshits want to act like they are fighting racism without actually fighting real racist issues, so they concoct some fake problem they can get credit for protesting.

They would probably run the other way if they saw a minority getting jumped by actual racists. They just want something easy to do so they can post it on social media. All they really do is shift focus from actual problematic racism… more harm than good

Cherokee south or Cherokee Oklahoma?

I remember going into Mesa AZ as a kid. My grandfather took me in as a learning moment. He took me to a Barber shop that a sign in front said, "if you are Indian, go get your hair cut somewhere else" That moment actually inspired me as a kid. I became to think of Business. that Barber basically took 45% of the people needing haircuts elsewhere.

I know live in the corporate world. you want to call yourself Redskin? there is a reason for it and it is not negative. Go redskins. (unless you play the Steelers. then **** you)

my great great grandmother took that walk from Georgia to Oklahoma, I think she was like 8 years old. I guess i'm l'm blessed to be here. My grandmother and my father lived on the reservation in the early 1900's. when my dad got home from the war they relocated to Indiana, a few years later I came along. My dad told me he served on the Alabama so when I moved to Alabama I went on the tour of the ship. sure as **** his name is listed in the ship with all the others that served there during the war. pretty cool stuff.

My great grandma was in a Japanese interment camp in New Mexico. A lot of us have had some family type of “injustice” at some point. You and I are not out there demanding reparations though. It’s stupid to get mad at others for something they have nothing to do with other than an ancestor being involved

you know it's a shame how we have become such a bunch of ******* in this nation. I for one would welcome back the team being called the redskins because it just feels natural. I have said this so many times I feel like a broken record. IT'S A WORD. it does not define who you are, you define who you are by your actions and reactions.

We have so many more pressing issues in this country that getting all tittie hurt over being called a redskin, nigger, spic, kike or any other thing you can think of is just stupid.
I must just be an idiot because I can not understand how any race can use those slang words amongst themselves but find them so offensive if another race uses them. just blows my mind.

will you be defined by a name you are called or by the way you live your life.

Bring back the redskins let get back to some normalcy in this country.

But that’s the way you look at it, but what about the majority of Native Americans that don’t like it so much?

I’ve never look at the name as being racist or derogatory, but my feeling has always been that who are we to decide?

If Native Americans are OK with it, and it’s only a bunch of white liberals who think they know what’s best for everyone else, then Im good with the Redskins name.
But if the majority of American Indians don’t like it then I feel we should honor their wishes.

Harrruuumph!

I'd love to be able to play this again and not worry about getting in trouble

my great great grandmother almost made that walk. She was sold to a farmer. One of the farm hands then saved money to buy her from the farmer. He was my great great grandfather.

There are almost 600 different Native American Tribes in this country, they talked to three. I would estimate that I am acquainted with well over a hundred Native Americans in a few different states and I bet it is less than 5% that even care which way it goes. So in my little circle the overwhelming majority don't care one way or another.

Here is a little history lesson. The first Native American slaves "servants" were taken by Columbus in 1492 when they landed in the America's and things went steadily bad for my people. in contrast the first black slaves didn't ARRIVE in America until 1619, brought here by African slave owners from Africa. For African Americans that want to ***** about being forced from their land, put the blame where it belongs.. other Black people. My people were forced from a land that only we knew until Columbus got here. My ancestors suffered well over 150 years longer and in my opinion to a much greater degree or at least equal to what the blacks did.

I said all of this to say this. The Native American people have gotten past all of the atrocities for a couple reasons. First we realize that holding people accountable for something that happened generations ago is asinine. Second you can not ever achieve inner peace if you continue to hang onto hatred and enact violence at every turn.

Let me end by saying this. A persons skin color or what they are called does not define who they are, only their actions and the culture they choose to live in along with the ignorance they choose to live in about their own history. Let me add this, although I am proud of my heritage I am not proud of some of the atrocities my people committed on innocent white people while fighting with the government.

so go ahead and call your sports team what ever you want to, just remember to hit the local casino while your in town...

My sister had a DNA test done about a year ago and we really weren’t surprised with the results as they pretty much confirmed what our family bibles tell us. There has been extensive documentation in them for well over 100 years. My Great, Great, Great Grandmother and Great Grandmother made an extensive effort to document EVERYTHING. My Great Aunt continued the efforts as well as taught me to continue her efforts. With technology and DNA testing we now have verifiable proof of everything that was recorded previously. We have confirmed links to over 200 DNA matches within our tree of almost 2000 individuals. We can trace our families arrival back to over 20 immigrations since 1634 to the most recent in 1949.

Our family is very much a mongrel mix. We are a majority white from English, Irish and Scottish decent, though not by much (43%) the balance is a mixture of African (both white and black), Native American, American Black, Spanish Korean and Mexican. The only surprise was the Spanish, though I’m sure it came through the Mexican line, as that lineage has been most difficult to research.

If you haven’t done genealogical research before, I would HIGHLY recommend getting involved. It can be extremely enlightening as well as frustrating.

My bottom line was simply if there is a majority consensus among Native Americans that the name should be done away with, then lose it, because what’s good for black people should be good for Native American people.
Im sure if some sports team were called some name associated with black people, (let alone having a caricature as in the case of the Cleveland Indians Chief Wahoo), it would have been done away with 40 years ago.
I’m playing devils advocate here.
Another argument I’ve heard is that the name may not even be offensive, but to group a “race” of people with animals, bandits, and pillagers ie…Vikings, Raiders, Buccaneers, Pirates is not cool.

Of course skin color doesn’t define a person, but it sure does to many not their color. I’ll keep my view about Arab Muslims to myself.

All that said, one poll confirms your position that the majority of Native Americans don’t give a damn about the name.
Polls and Surveys:

  • Early Polls:
    .

Some early polls, like a 2016 Washington Post poll, indicated that a large majority of Native Americans were not bothered by the name.

However another poll in 2020 indicates that the 2016 poll was flawed. Almost half do not approve.

I’m sure others appreciated the history lesson, but always having an interest in history I’m very well aware of the enslavement of Native Americans prior to the North Atlantic slave trade.

Hell, everyone was a slave and everyone owned slaves!

Yes African chieftains owned slaves captured from rival tribes who then were sold to the white man, likewise, Native Americans enslaved other Native Americans.
Native American tribes also owned black slaves.
There were thousands of black slaveowners in the US.

Then there was the North African slave trade which proceeded the North Atlantic by some 700 years. It was conducted by Muslims whom enslaved mainly Eastern Europeans from which the Slavic peoples got their name.
I’m of Slavic descent, so my ancestors may have been slaves too! Give me my reparations!
Thomas Jefferson had a Koran in his library in order to try to understand how those people think. We’re still trying to understand them to this day.

Lest we forget about the Irish being victims of slavery to an extent.

The Japanese enslaved the Koreans and Chinese.
I’m sure the Chinese enslaved somebody.

Getting back to names, let me ask you this.
Pretend the name “Redskins” never existed for a sports team.

Say a new sports franchise is granted to some city. What would be your reaction if the name Redskins was considered to honor Indians.
Forget the woke crap, I don’t think it would fly no matter who you are.

Maybe I’m wrong but I would imagine even the most anti woke conservative would find the name at least a bit tacky, only because I’m one of those anti woke conservatives.

Some folks will always want to find the glass half empty, regardless of original intent (if that even matters). SM has amplified these voices over the past generation to make it seem like they represent a significant portion of society, when most don't actually care.

This is one of those situations; I don't think any 'Skins fan I've ever met thought that the name represented anything other than an association with and respect of a class of warriors known and feared in battle, dignified, smart and tough....and when Joe Gibbs was the coach, they actually were!

I'd prefer to ask folks like Warriors opinion, simply, and then just move forward.

If it wasn't a problem a generation ago, and is now, it's because those crying about it are perceived to have voice due to SM agitators who move from cause to cause dividing people by marketing minor issues as newly relevant. Fuuck them for wasting the time and energy of the people by causing division.
