Next year's coach?

Sorry, brain fart. I remember saying a while ago that I'd like Jon Gruden. Probably won't happen though. Promoting Smitty is more realistic.
If it comes to that, Deuce will probably want to stick to The Steelers Way and hire another unknown coordinator like Noll, Chin, and Shades.

The unknown coordinator WILL be the way

That gets Rooney a cheap first 5 years to help offset the overpayments the HC will be getting in years 10-20

Killer instinct from Cowher? Cowher played Marty Ball. His goal was to get up ten and sit on it. Man I wonder what they will be saying about Tomlin in 10-15 years. Mythology.
yes - get up 10, sit on it by running the ball and killing the clock while not playing some ****** up prevent defense.

Broncos OC would be solid. They are not exactly stacked at skill positions
I think you are living in the past. Gruden was awful when he came back and Haley hasn't been in the NFL since 2018. I think we need an offensive HC, but I wouldn't mind Flores as coach or DC.
I'd hire Flores in a heartbeat as long as he'd agree to hire an aggressive OC and leave him alone.

Never a losing season. Greatest coach everrrrr.....

I would have to say Coach Cowher did have a killer instinct based on his record when having a 10 point lead as you mentioned in a game.
As a reminder, his record in those games was 108-1-1.
So to me if you were an opposing team and you were down by 10 points in a game at any time against Bill Cowher’s Steelers, you might as well start getting on the bus home
Yes. Cowher was a better Defensive coach. And he employed some better DCs. That doesn't define killer instinct to.me. the Term Marty Ball was synonymous with Bill. You know it, I know it. And it wasn't a term of endearment. Bill was a great coach. I prefer him to Shades unquestionably. But let's not just write up a mythology. He had big game problems. There was similar call for his head right up till they won the SB in '05. And think for a second the razors edge that was on.

That calling of his head was for not being able to get past the AFCCG (s), not for NO PLAYOFF WINS IN 8 YEARS.

Whole different animal.

We're VERY fortunate to not still be sitting on 4 SB Titles.

The big game problems came usually when he had ham and eggers at QB. 7-8 in the playoffs before Ben. Tomlin was 8-9 with Ben.

Razor’s edge? Beat the top 3 seeds in the AFC and the top seed in the NFC.

Three years later, Tomlin beat an 8-8 San Diego team w/o Tomlinson, a Ravens team with a rookie QB and head coach because of a great play by Troy, and a 9-7 WC Cardinals team because of two miraculous plays by Deebo and Ben/Holmes.

THAT was a razor’s edge Super Bowl run.

The 2004-2005 Season the Steelers barely made the Playoffs. They were damn lucky Ben wasn't lost for the season in San Diego. (I WAS THERE), they benefited from the Bengals QB injury, they damn near frittered away the game in Indy. And if they don't win that season I'm not sure Cowher’s around. And if you think I like Tomlin over Cowher......**** off. All I'm saying is there is some mythology happening here. I want Tomlin gone. A lot of people wanted Cowher gone before SB. FACTS.

That’s my appreciation of the scene. Most forget that Cowher’s & Noll’s for that matter, had better & more tough teams to play. The conference was much stronger overall than today’s pussification of the NFL.

Thanks for the great post and pulling attention to the conditions of wins.

Downplaying that historic win in Indy is….something. Tomlin would have been blown out trying to establish the run while Manning picked apart his soft defense.

Benz crushed it this morning in Trib.
I read Tim’s article and man you’re correct. He really did crush it! Spot on about everything.
I have never seen a coach like Tomlin so protected and insulated in any sport that has had such mediocre results but placed on this pedestal.
The faithful fans of the Steelers and the Pirates are being held hostage by two incompetent, inept, greedy, weak owners.
I suggest if you have the time, pull up Benz’s article in the Trib this morning.

They barely made the playoffs because Ben got hurt, they were sitting at 7-2 when Ben got hurt. So if you're saying we benefited from the Bengals QB injury, well teams benefited from Ben being hurt, we are a higher seed if Ben doesn't get hurt.
There was never chants at games for Cowher to be fired, or bill boards purchased by fans for Cowher to be fired. There definitely were fans wanting to move on from him, but that's because he would lose in AFCCG with Neil or Kordell, not because of not being able to win a playoff game. It was never this bad with fans wanting Cowher gone, like it is with Tomlin. Cowhers longest streak without a playoff win was 3 years, Tomlin is on what 8? he went 5 years (11, 12, 13, 14, 15) without winning a playoff game also. Cowher won at least 1 playoff game in 8 of his 15 years, Tomlin has won a playoff game in 4 of his 19 seasons.
The Martyball was the dumbest thing I've ever heard, well he was 110-1-1 when up by 10 points but it wasn't pretty, who cares they won.
So now we're complaining about almost losing a playoff game on the road to a team that beat us pretty easily a month or so before? Damn. Imagine Tomlin coaching that game, he wouldn't have changed anything from the *** whooping we took the previous game, oh wait we saw that first hand last year with Baltimore in the playoffs.

A very interesting interview from a recent defensive player.

Martyball would look like the greatest show on turf compared to what Tomlin employees.

I want to go on record as saying that I am convinced that Tomlin was not a DEI hire. He may have been a Rooney Rule interview, but set the room on fire, by all accounts. First time I heard him speak I was captivated and excited.

He was not a DEI hire.
This is what I've tried to tell the DEI obsessed here. The Steelers brass thought the walk matched the talk. He has the gift of gab and they bought into it and got stuck because they don't fire coaches. I think he doesn't get a new contract....surely they've seen enough.

Let's be clear. I'm not favorably comparing to Tomlin to Cowher. Cowher put up winners with a shoestring budget comparable to other teams. All I'm saying is people are waxing poetic about some things and that's a mythology. People were calling for his job. And a couple things don't go his way snd he never wins a Championship in Pittsburgh. And I don't think, I know from reading his book.......he'd absolutely agree.

The difference is fans wanted Cowher gone because he couldn't win an AFCCG at home/couldn't win a Super Bowl. Fans want Tomlin gone because he can't win a playoff game.

Not arguing. But point is fans wanted Cowher gone.
Maybe I missed something, but has anyone ever denied that fans wanted Cowher fired at various points throughout his tenure? As far as I know, everyone is well aware of that.
