Here we are then, just beyond the opening third of the season, and it’s been a fascinating start. It’s the ideal time to take a fresh look at how things are going across the National Football League, not just solely with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whilst things may not have started the way it was hoped for many, it’s great to see a renewed positivity around this football team.
Now sitting at 5-3 and second place in the AFC North, it may be too soon to say whether or not newly 150-win head coach Mike Tomlin and his men in black and gold make a late dash into the post-season, but let’s have a look at who are amongst the favorites to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy in 2022 anyways.
The Bucs were many people’s pick to continue where they left off before the first ball was kicked in 2021, and so far they’ve proved to be right. Despite coming off a loss on Sunday to the New Orleans Saints 36-27, Tom Brady continues to be the evergreen quarterback and with both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in good form too, they’re proving to be a good combination. However, it’s the performance of their running back, Leonard Fournette, which has arguably been the standout so far. If they can keep him fit, and Brady firing, they’ll definitely be in the mix again late this season.
Who would’ve saw Sunday’s 9-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars coming.
Before things got underway in September, some onlookers predicted a slow start for Sean McDermott’s team; after all, they did have a tough list of fixtures in the first month or so of the season including a Week 1 loss to the Steelers. But, due to the way they’ve dominated their opponents in victory, it’s easy to see why they’re installed as many people’s pick for the championship. Although the Bills haven’t had an unblemished record, their defense really stands out as their key strong point. It provides the perfect platform for the offense to finish off the opposition.
The Cards are definitely the surprise package of the season so far. They’ve been in blistering form right from the get go. Although they were expected to be a competitive team, no one expected what we’ve seen. Their QB, Kyler Murray, has been nothing short of stunning and is rightly being touted as one of the leading candidates for the MVP this season. But the defense has been just as good. The overall package has led Coral’s updated NFL odds to peg the Cardinals at 15/2 for the Super Bowl. There’s still a long way to go in the season, but the groundwork is definitely being put in to give them the best chance of their first ever win at Super Bowl LVI which this season is to be held at the Ram’s SoFi stadium.
The Rams are desperate to play at their home in the Super Bowl next February. Matthew Stafford has been a real standout so far. He excelled against the Bucs earlier in the season cutting them open almost at will. Of course, they’re coming off of what many would call a surprising 28-16 loss to the Derrick Henry-less Tennessee Titans at home, but don’t let that fool you of this team’s potential. Some suggested signing DeSean Jackson was a gamble before he was finally released earlier this month. But that hasn’t stopped this team from rolling. The mix of youth and the experience of Stafford with the unbelievable play of Cooper Kupp has been a real highlight, leaving the Rams well placed to be in the mix for the post-season championship fight.
It’s not been the best of starts for Patrick Mahomes and co. this season. They look like a shadow of the side which stormed into back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Even their former NFL MVP in Mahomes is struggling. He’s gave away more turnovers this season than he did in the entirety of the last two. Head coach Andy Reid has even said that the number of mistakes they’re making is something that he’s never seen before. However, despite these errors, it’s impossible to ignore the Chiefs when they’re on form. With Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce aiming to catch the supply from Mahomes, they can turn a game in a heartbeat. Although they might not have hit the heights of previous seasons, you cannot rule out a herculean comeback from the Chiefs just yet.
