NFL to Discuss Banning "Hip Drop" tackle

Every time I see one of these tackles I'm worried someone is going to break a leg. The problem is they've eliminated so many options for the defense, so they have to do whatever is possible and this is an alternative to drawing a penalty and fine.
voice of reason.

Does this hip drop tackle happen when players are tackled at the legs..? no.

Tackle high , then they resort to this hip drop on the back of the legs of the carrier. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Just wondering how many times a game this type of tackle is used. The thing is the refs will be made to interpret all tackles for this and there will be many missed calls. That is where the issue is. Adding one more judgment-type call by the refs. The game anymore is being dictated by calls the refs make or don't make for one team vs another. For one player vs another player.

Totally agree, the helmet is meant to protect the player. It has morphed into a weapon. If the face-mask part was removed, I’d think a lot of head injury (long term) would fade away or at least lower significantly.

Tackling and missiles would become way more fundamental than they are today.

The game would become more watchable In comparison to today’s product.

I am not sure about this. In Rugby you can't throw the ball forward. Alot of big hits are when the QB leads a WR out to dry and he gets lit up. If you have a safety flying across the field at 20mph trying to break up a pass going to be tough to have full control. In the trenches and what not no face mask might help, but I just think it would be too risky

Patric Mahomes is the new t*mmyb*y. Kenny Picket gets body whipped and NO flag, Patric Mahomes takes a “flop” and gets an easy play off win. Just one example, but Mahomes gets special REF treatment, I see it often enough.

Ban the hip drop?
I'd rather the NFL discuss banning hip hop at halftime shows.
Tell me you're a Gen-Xer without telling me you are a Gen-Xer.😁

A player is out there full speed makes a tackle to you really believe he is thinking OH this is not the way I should make the play. When will Godel punish the offense everything is directed to the defense .

Of course we still have the running back. His life is lesser. Smash him all you want.

I like the robot idea above. They won't become free agents or miss games. Keep backup robots on the roster and you're good. No more problems. No offseason bs. No out of shape players. No robot strikes.
7 games a week, just like Baseball!!

It would definitely slow the game down and the slower, the less injury. The “D” will have to slow down, the “O” will have to slow down, leastways att he actual point of attach / contact.

It will never happen so everything here is a moot point other than a discussion point.

I have said this for a LONG time...if you take the facemasks off, no ball carrier is going to lead with their head, and no defender is going to lead with his helmet on a tackle. Players do it because they feel invincible under the helmet and facemask.

I don’t recall players tackling like this in the past, it seems to be a relatively new technique (pull down and back rather than drive into and push down the ball carrier) that is easier and prevents forward progress.

So take the face masks off and add flags?sounds like a boring game many of us make fun of

You’d have to take tackling out of the game if you remove facial protection, dudes ain’t risking their eyes and nose in hopes for better tackling form from feeling more vulnerable

The “game” of football, as we all know and cherished, has long left us for good. To many rules changes, medical break throughs, equipment improvements, etc..

BUT

The biggest change to the game has been the introduction of Fantasy Football and where that has taken the game.

There is no turning back, not a chance in hell that the BIG MONEY will ever risk or be risked, to satisfy a very small fan base in wanting integrity & Fairness replenished within the game.

That ticket of admittance to the game says………… the cost of the ticket if for the entertainment value you will receive.

That and players go where they can make the most money. They are not dedicated to their teams.

In a way I don’t blame them. Maximize your income as much as you can. I know I’d go where the $$$. Screw the championships. If can retire in my 30’s and be set for life. Keep your rings. I’ll happily invest wisely and enjoy life on my terms

Football had no facemasks for close to 100 years. Rugby and Aussie League have no facemasks or helmets...and tackling still occurs. Kids play backyard tackle football with no helmets or facemasks all the time...don't see anyone avoiding tackling there either. The difference is that NOBODY with more than 2 brain cells leads with their head in any of those scenarios and you see form tackling.

Yeah

Football is much faster and harder hitting than the old padded helmets days…And all the guys have more than 2 brain cells as well and still tackle the way they tackle not because lack of brain cells but because they only have a few options left to legally get guys on the ground…and the job pays well

Just too much of a liability to remove protection gear, I’d see the concussion dome topped helmets being a thing before removing face masks

Heck they’ll put everyone in padded Sumo outfits before removing face masks

Or just break out the flags and finish the pussification that has been started

Wouldn't it be great if a bunch of NFL veterans from the 70s/80s/90s got together and made some recommendations about the good/bad rule changes, player safety, NFL game product, etc.?

It's hard to believe that the NFL wouldn't be doing this quietly, to always get the best advisory from those connected intimately with their business and product.
