Well, he admitted to no throwing to middle of field, already. Is this season going to be dedicated to sidelines patterns only? Nothing up the middle. Genius. Great game plan, brilliant. Tomlin loves the 18-10 ball game. Kudos.

Every team doesn’t have a S as adept as Bates roaming the middle of the field. We will soon see.

Rare to fault the game plan after a victory in which they controlled the ball and did basically what they were trying to do

It’’ll be ok

agreed, but when the same scenario has occurred repeatedly over the last 2 years, it makes you wonder how much of that is really by Smith's design and how much is being dictated from the HC. Not throwing over the middle has been a constant since Ben retired.

Everybody knows Tomlin doesn't use the middle of the field. No surprise. Tomlin has the running qb that he has wanted for a long time. We will see more of the same offense in games to come. Someone will jump a short route for a pick and then Tomlin might adjust strategy.

Would definitely look more at Mike than Arthur on that trend imo

They need designed plays for half the field and to roll Fields out of the pocket to create more space on the field as the receivers outside GP need the help and it would utilize JF extreme athletic ability

Aurthor Smith is a good OC and had a solid game plan last week.

He will have a solid game plan this week and the over the middle will be used to a small degree, baby steps to get Coach Tomlin on board.

Hopefully it entails an actual throw into the EZ.

Might have to give him a nickname of some sort.

FG Smith.....perhaps.

Anyone have a catchier one. Mine was pretty generic.🤪

You gotta to be joking. It is WEEK DOS. This is not 2008. The roster has some holes but we are much better than we were in January after the Buffalo beat down. Somebody give this guy a shot and a beer.

Imagine if Wilson can step in and be 75% of who he was 5 years ago. The D will look even better and the afccg will be within reach

Brilliant strategy by Smith/Tomlin.
Picking up where we left off last year by never throwing down the middle, Denver will assume it will be no different against them and not be prepared.
Then BOOM! Out of nowhere, Fields to Muuuuth! Down the middle for a TD!!!

The following week Fields and company will have our opponents head spinning as we evolve into a scoring machine .

It will be interesting to how they handle the game. My gut says Tomlin goes ultra conservative. It's all he knows.

Yea, we will score 18 points forever. Awesome. That was our average for the year. That's all we need.

I think what’s more important is what he left unsaid as he didn’t want to throw his Qb under the bus and instead took the blame on himself. The middle of the field has been a source of turnovers for Fields particularly. I am sure they want to use the middle but will wait for either Fields to learn to throw timing and anticipation routes or Wilson is back. They certainly were practicing those throws.

Would I have liked a 30 burger. Sure. I don't ***** about gameplans in wins. Cousindms threw over the middle......a lot. I'd like to see them play offense like KC and 49ers they can't. Why they are not really SB contenders but outside of those two......who is. Really?

Too bad the OP doesn’t read actual reports from press writers who actually interview players in the locker room after games and practices. If he did he would have read that all the offensive players knew and game prepped all week to not throwing to the middle of the field. The scheme was to remove Bates and Simmons from having any impact. Just like ATL, but unsuccessfully, scheming TJ by double and even triple teaming him. Concentration on the ground game was 1st with misdirection throws to the numbers or screens.

Also since the OP doesn’t watch all-22 film, he wouldn’t have seen the play in which CA3 got blown up on the block was a misread by Fields. It was supposed to be a run/pass option. Had he handed off to Warren he would have walked in for a TD. ATL flooded the DBs to the opposite side.

It doesn’t matter though, the OP will create a new thread on a topic already discussed in the game thread or Chico’s post game thread. Trying to stay visible, even though the OP isn't relevant.

Smiths press conference this was light this week on details (naturally), but beat writers noted after practices players were intimating big things this week from TEs in places they haven’t seen yet. So that means in between the numbers, especially if Fields plays.

On another note, you can’t prove that Cousins is either still not 100% with that Achilles or is big gun shy about getting steamrolled on it. I saw a graphic on one of the ESPN NFL analysts regarding Cousins Pistol/Shotgun stance. It’s changed from before his injury, he doesn’t use an aggressive pivot stance like before, but rather an even-flat footed stance. The focus being Cousins is protecting that foot now.

It has been 1 game. I would get it if had been a blowout loss like last years open

They won on the road week 1 against a team they were supposed to lose to.

even you must have some positives?

Not using the MOF should fireable in today's NFL where you can't drill the WR.

I am hoping for more TE participation, especially down the seam.

Nice post Ike, thank you.

DK sports is one of those beat writers that does do practice and locker room interviews. All the players know him and respect him. He does a DK Daily shot, usually out early morning. Then he started doing what he calls the Double Shot, comes out at 4pm. NO, they are not just repeats of one or the other, pretty good stuff.

The OP doesn’t have much credibility on anything, he’s proven that more than once. He can’t seem to find his happy spot with himself as he continually has to put himself in front of the camera, shameful or ————— just leave it at that.

Yeah maybe he was just safe guarding it early as I am sure as the injury rear view mirrors he will be back to his old self. Even then he was never afraid of throwing and occasional INTs have followed suit.

So in that aspect hard to know how much was just the Steelers playing sound D and how much was Cousins shaking off rust or attempting to.

I guess moving forward we will find a clearer picture as they have some upcoming opponents that can pass very well.

I want to think the secondary is a strength but I will say they have the makings of it.

Corner is my question mark to an extent. But I think the room has some bodies that can change that thinking. Bishop has the speed and Trice has some outside corner attributes that have my curiosity of what can be.

If DJ can continue showing solid my concerns will lessen by the week….

Realizing Washington's full potential in the 12 personnel will soon lead to an ever so slightly increased usage of the middle of the field as Smith slowly brings the QB and HC up to speed on how it can open things up

trust is built in baby steps round here
