I really felt going into this season that the Steelers and Penn State were in a similar situation. Both bringing in a new OC, struggling QB, struggling OL, but they have some playmakers in the passing game.
If anybody saw PSU vs Auburn, you saw the huge difference playcalling makes. Penn State still struggled to run the ball. Auburn pretty much stuffed them but they kept attacking with different formations and attacking all areas of the field. The result was that their struggling QB Sean Clifford, completed 28 of 32 against a really good Auburn defense. The OC gave Clifford easy reads and he played with a ton of confidence. Auburn was on their heels all night.
I just bring that up to say that i expected similar with the Steelers this year. When you KNOW your OL needs help, there are things you can do to help them. The Steelers have 3 playmakers at WR. Ebron has his issues but defenses do respect his speed. They also added Najee and Freiermuth who can bot be big parts of the passing game. For a playcaller, there are a ton of options.
In watching PSU, i watched a playcaller who was just watching and waiting for Auburn to react. They ran a few WR screens with a TE out in front blocking. After Auburn started playing them tighter, PSU lines up and showed the same play but this time the TE took off running and they hit it for a long gain as Auburn expected him to be blocking.
Sometimes that's all it is. It's why they call them "wrinkles". It's just a little something different to keep a defense guessing.
Steeler opponents are NEVER guessing. They know what's coming. This offense is still really vanilla. I understand that they are still learning a new offense and it takes time to install everything but PSU is in the same boat and with a bunch of kids limited to 20 hours of practice per week, they managed to install enough wrinkles to beat a really good defense.
It seems they are either keeping things too simple or the players just aren't learning it. I question why they wasted preseason being vanilla. The claim is they didn't want to tip their hand. Well, I'd rather have the guys actually know what they're doing more than the small surprise you may gain by hiding something in the preseason.
I don't want to hear the OL excuses either. The Chiefs have 5 new starters. The Ravens have a ton of injuries and they can still block people. The Steelers seem to think you need 5 pro bowlers to be able to block anybody.
