Offensive Problem Summed up in One Sentence

I might be going out on a limb here but I think if our OL starts to block drastically better all of our problems might just go away....maybe.
When Banner is healthy, I'd bury Chuks so far on the depth chart that he'd have to buy tickets to get into the stadium. And how bad must Haeg be that they won't even give him a shot over Chuks?
But yeah ... Chuks sucks

I like the "buy a ticket" part, got a good chuckle.

When Banner does come back it's not like miraculously the OL will be fixed. Banner will need some acclimation time as well but also he will need to prove his ability and endurance from injury. I'm thinking positive as he will be a step up from Okofar and I'm patient enough to give Banner the time needed even with the urgency at hand.

Won't take credit for it. I heard/read it somewhere. Just can't remember where.

Regardless it's still funny as heck and I thank You for the laugh.

NOTE: I may use it as well if the need arises.

A big problem right here is the Steelers/Ben still refuse to attack the middle of the field.

the question then becomes, is it Canada's route designs that are not attacking the middle or is Ben just not throwing to guys that are open in the middle.

This makes running even harder. Defenses are already crowding the line. Now if those LBs feel like they don;t have to worry about dropping back in coverage, they can stay up near the line even more.

It really does seem that this offense is quick WR screen or deep shot down the sideline.

I really felt going into this season that the Steelers and Penn State were in a similar situation. Both bringing in a new OC, struggling QB, struggling OL, but they have some playmakers in the passing game.

If anybody saw PSU vs Auburn, you saw the huge difference playcalling makes. Penn State still struggled to run the ball. Auburn pretty much stuffed them but they kept attacking with different formations and attacking all areas of the field. The result was that their struggling QB Sean Clifford, completed 28 of 32 against a really good Auburn defense. The OC gave Clifford easy reads and he played with a ton of confidence. Auburn was on their heels all night.

I just bring that up to say that i expected similar with the Steelers this year. When you KNOW your OL needs help, there are things you can do to help them. The Steelers have 3 playmakers at WR. Ebron has his issues but defenses do respect his speed. They also added Najee and Freiermuth who can bot be big parts of the passing game. For a playcaller, there are a ton of options.

In watching PSU, i watched a playcaller who was just watching and waiting for Auburn to react. They ran a few WR screens with a TE out in front blocking. After Auburn started playing them tighter, PSU lines up and showed the same play but this time the TE took off running and they hit it for a long gain as Auburn expected him to be blocking.

Sometimes that's all it is. It's why they call them "wrinkles". It's just a little something different to keep a defense guessing.

Steeler opponents are NEVER guessing. They know what's coming. This offense is still really vanilla. I understand that they are still learning a new offense and it takes time to install everything but PSU is in the same boat and with a bunch of kids limited to 20 hours of practice per week, they managed to install enough wrinkles to beat a really good defense.

It seems they are either keeping things too simple or the players just aren't learning it. I question why they wasted preseason being vanilla. The claim is they didn't want to tip their hand. Well, I'd rather have the guys actually know what they're doing more than the small surprise you may gain by hiding something in the preseason.

I don't want to hear the OL excuses either. The Chiefs have 5 new starters. The Ravens have a ton of injuries and they can still block people. The Steelers seem to think you need 5 pro bowlers to be able to block anybody.

What about the muddle huddle? I remember a couple years ago when we went uptempo the offense seemed almost unstoppable.
I get that with new guys up front maybe they aren't ready for it, but ****, we didn't really see much of it last year either.
Ben has said he likes that style make it happen! Keep the defense on their heels!

I hear what you are saying but the muddle huddle is just a way of hiding the things that are currently wrong. The "D" will still crowd the line. A few years ago when we did use that "muddle huddle" we actually were 2 demensional unlike currently.

I'm not saying it won't work but until we get two dementional it would be easy to defend and the "D" would not be on its heals.

THIS is exactly it. Canada needs to fix this right now.
I wish Canada had a magic controller to make Ben throw it to the middle of the field. I'm sure those TE's running routes in the middle are just for distraction

Sta-Puf, the Steelers offensive line toughness coordinator, said he is going to toughen up the line right damn quick and get the running game back on track.

"I'm introducing a new drill that is going to push our boys to the limit. Cheese Whiz sharpens marshmallow."

Ben is the bad guy but look at the receivers how if they run the correct route, then will they catch the ball and seldom this do they get yards after if and if they hold on to the ball. The line is awful no need to say that this it.

So tired of the "separation" argument. What good does it do if a WR creates separation but runs the wrong route or drops the ball? I'd take JuJu and his little to no separation "just get me the ball and I'll catch it" over DJ running free and dropping the ball/running the wrong route/quitting on the right route every day ... Especially on Sundays!
Separation doesn't mean **** if you continue to find new ways to **** up anyway.
Separation is the exception, not the rule.

Good to great WRs run precision patterns and are in sync with timing patterns/back shoulder throws, etc. Since Ben never practices, how are they supposed to get better?

Well it's 14 games I believe since the team had over 100 yards running and quite a few where we didn't break 50. At least this season we can hope that the youngsters improve and Banner returns, he's gotta be an improvement over chuks. Right? I said Right?

But then they'll probably sit Moore.

The offense hasn't done anything consistently for well over a year and we're seriously shallow in the secondary. We all knew this going into the season, I got my hopes up over a blocked punt and a fine defensive performance last week.
You can't lose 5 starters (6 if count Tuitt) - especially when one is legitimately the leagues best defensive player and expect the defense to play to the same standard. Healthy I still would have taken us to win. But not healthy and 4 players with groin injuries... something that only heals with rest, concerns me.

It's probably a combination of both. As they said, Baltimore put out the blueprint and every team has followed it. Ben seems unwilling to make these throws so if he won't throw them, Canada probably wouldn't waste his time putting them into the game plan.

With how unstable the ol has been I would go more unbalanced 2wr 2te 1 Te with my 2 we on the outside juju and chase inside chip n go extra ot coward as a Te and Harris as the lone rb. Until u can get 4-5 yArds teams are just going to rush the interior ol and force Ben to move around while having the cb play tight just like the raiders did our old lebeau scheme throw it short and we will tackle you before the yard marker.
Tomorrow chase better from Ben work on at least 20 slants each ball juju drops run a lap. Get Enron to do some simple hooks and same thing you are bigger and faster then the guy covering you catch and get tax yards every drop burn a mile. DJ full 2 hr watching film after practice

i think you gotta

I tentatively agree - but when Banner is back in earnest, i think it'll help tremendously. If Moore can keep playing pass-pro set at LT and Banner is there enveloping rushers, that opens up the playbook.

Wow that is horrible. Not a single pass even attempted over 10 yrds in the middle of the field. Is this Ben, Canada, both? Another thing I would like to see is Ben under center either I form or 2 TE sets. Use JuJu and DJ or JuJu and Claypool as the WRs. Get some extra blockers in there and help the Oline / run game

You know the funny thing is when Ben first came into the league, he was AMAZING at attacking the middle of the field. I mean, he would move in the pocket and always look down the middle of the field. His YPA was up around 8+ back then and a lot of that was the deep middle passing game.

I have always disliked Arians and I always though he pandered to Ben in his formative years, but Arians does know how to create passing routes and attack different levels of the field. I just feel as we've geared the whole offense to protect Ben in his 30's, the sophistication of the pass routes has gone completely in the garbage. It probably started back with Haley, when they went through the playbook and started pulling out pages of the Arians system and added shorter pass play. And each new coordinator since then has done the same thing. Unfortunately all the stuff "taken out" over the years because it exposes Ben are EXACTLY the kind of sophisticated route trees that attack all levels of the field and keep defenses honest. Attacking deep HAS to be more than just running fly routes down the sidelines.

Almost every team now puts 9+ guys up and around the line of scrimmage against us. We're seeing less cover-2 and more cover-1. The lack of a deep passing game and good pass protection allows a much more emphasized approach to jam our receivers (I mean, if they beat the jam, what bad thing is going to happen exactly?).

This offense is pretty broken. I said at the beginning of the year, Najee Harris needed to look like the 2nd coming of Ladainian Tomlinson for this plan to work and that just isn't happening. That was the basket this team put their eggs into going into the season. Maybe the offensive line starts to gel and Harris starts putting up some big time production by the mid-point of the season, but by then it could be too late. And I'm not even confident that will happen.

Najee was the wrong pick. It has nothing to do with him. It has to do with drafting a RB when your OL is broken and hoping a RB magically makes a run game appear.

It is a rare RB that can create runs out of nothing. Najee is not that kind of RB.

This team would be better off if they kept Conner or signed a comparable RB and drafted OT in the 1st.

Would they? Because that T wouldn't have taken time to develop or gel? We already have three young prospects starting. Would another have made a difference? And who? The one T I liked went right before the Steelers picked. I am sure they were surprised Banner had a set back as well.
