I'll cut to the quick - right now that is Howard Jones. Any player can pick up a fumble. How is Howard Jones getting the accolades when it was Vic So'oto (who probably won't make the team himself) that caused 2 of the 3 turnovers?

Hojo may yet make the team, but it will be because of special teams play. He hasn't budged on the depth chart on defense so far.

I think that Shazier guy is over-rated. I mean, he hasn't even played a meaningful game yet. /evil grin

They both are playing well, So'oto is a veteran who has had his share of injuries that has helped him bounce around the league. His ceiling is pretty much what he is, Howard Jones is an undrafted ROOKIE free agent. When you have two players of similar skill, in the same position, and limited roster spots. You take the one with the higher ceiling. The Steelers might try to find a way to keep them both, for special teams purposes. But its a pleasant surprise for both of them, seeing as the OLB position is pretty thin.

I think if Howard Jones is overrated, it's because we NEED skill at OLB so badly, so we look for it anywhere we can. But can we admit that the man has NFL level athletic ability for the position? I'd love to see him make the cut and harass some QBs in spot relief duty

Hojo hasn't come close to sniffing a QB. He has speed, and good hands. Nothing else. He's Stevenson Sylvester 2.0 so far. At this point he'd only get snaps on defense in mop up duty in a blowout.

Hojo is what he is... a raw talent with all the ability in the world that played in a fairly small college and likely was getting drafted in a less stacked draft. Not keeping guys who can develop into something based on talent has plagued this team for a number of years now. Given the choice of a guy like Hojo or some vet bum who might be more ready right now, you take the guy who has a nose for the ball and the potential to be a pass rusher.

First bolded part: Not true. He's been around the QB quite a bit. Just not there to finish. The kid does have a knack for being around the ball and being opportunistic. Qualities this team has lacked in reserve LBers (as well as starters) for a while.

Second bolded part: This is exactly when you would expect your developmental players to see playing time. Or maybe we could just keep paying Chris Carter to not develop.

I'm not saying the kid is the second coming, but he's a more intriguing developmental guy than Carter, with who you already know what you have.

The "beauty" of the 4th preseason game is that guys like HoJo, Mauro, So'oto etc. will play nearly the entire game and we'll have a better sense after that. But at this point, I think HoJo would pass through waivers and make it to our practice squad (even though there will be at least 50 posts on this board over the next couple weeks about how "some other team will surely grab him").

The thing to me is other than the fact that he "knows" the defense, why keep Carter over either of these guys? I mean, if Carter has to play, we're screwed at the position anyway. So, why not keep the more explosive athletes and develop them. Carter has had plenty of opportunity to show what he has, and they're still yanking his *** after one series.

Again, he's a ROOKIE UNDRAFTED free agent.

I do hope it's the end of the line for Carter. He was yanked after one series on defense (I believe he lost contain but not 100% sure) and he was also abused on kickoff coverage and replaced by Shazier there. At this point he doesn't deserve a roster spot but the guys that he is competing against (HoJo, So'oto) have practice squad eligibility...they really need to make their case on special teams to make the 53.

I agree, and his 11 tackles in the Bills game, poor showing when he should've made at least 50. And damn Colbert for drafting him in the first place. Now if you'll excuse me, I just hit the lottery but the check they gave me is the wrong color and I'm going to ***** about it. Back later.......

I understand that Hojo and So'to have practice squad eligibility. I just don't understand the mindset that says that just because they have it, we have to use it. To me, if either of them is even close to taking Carter's spot, it's a no brainer ... go with the potential.

I think you are probably right and there's a 90% chance that HoJo and Mauro make it past waivers and probably would sign on our PS over others. But, I look at the likes of Landry Jones, Tauren Poole, Derek Moye, Jordan Dangerfield and think we have more depth at those positions so I would rather pass up on them and hope they make it past waivers than a guy who can rush the passer whom we need sooner than later. Also, I like the fact Mauro can long snap so that might keep him on just for special teams and long snapping ability.

I think Mauro has the 53 made unless we re-sign Keisel in the next day or two. We can't go into the season with only 3 DEs (the two Cams and Tuitt) especially because Cam Thomas will play NT if McClendon is injured (with Tuitt playing at the spot Cam Thomas vacated).

I don't know about overrated, but one guy who has been disappointing so far is Mike Mitchell. He's only good at collecting flags.

Pretty funny seeing a moderator do the double-post thing. Glad to see you're one of us and not some demi-god up on a mountain somewhere.

we like to let you little people think we are just like the rest of you.....

IMO There are too many teams playing the 3-4 now for Mauro to not get claimed. He plays like a vet.
