8 million in dead money.
It's becoming pretty clear, based on a number of folks I know with ties to the organization and with other fans with very reliable team sources -- that Harvin has been a problem far before the beginning of this year.
This trade is a chemistry/team thing. It's been brewing for months. It doesn't really have anything to do with the on field results thus far.
While I've only heard it from one source so I'll just call it rumor, is that the organization felt that Harvin flat out lied about his health when the team traded for him and then subsequently dropped his hip labrum issue on them by way of telling them he was going to NY to get season ending surgery. Of course after getting a huge contract.
I'm not necessarily convinced that this led to the split between the two parties. Although I do firmly believe he did in fact lie about it throughout the initial trade process. What is clear, is that he had serious anger issues internally and had extreme difficulty in handling the team culture. This team is built on buy in to the team concept. Harvin wasn't going to coexist with that.
This is a trade I heartily endorse. It was a shame it didn't work out. Sometimes that happens. I'm just relieved that we have a FO and organization that has the stones to turn the page on bad moves quickly even when criticism is going to be rampant (not unlike firing Mora after one season before bringing Carroll in).
