I don’t think he hates playing Pitt. He just know Penn State gets nothing from it. If Penn State wins, it’s no big deal for them with pollsters. But if they lose, it is seen as a bad loss.
Penn State is already pulling big recruits from western PA, so it’s not really a recruiting gain for PSU either. It could however be huge for Pitt recruiting. That’s another reason why PSU should not play.
The Big Ten now has 9 conference games so PSU only has 3 games they control in scheduling. They use football to pay for all other sports, so they need to get 7 home games per year. In years where they get 5 home conference games, that means 2 of 3 non confernce must be home games. In years with only 4 home conference games, they need all 3 non conference to be home.
Most big programs follow a similar plan. They want 2 cupcakes and 1 big name opponent that will look good to pollsters.
On top of that, most Penn State fans don’t really care if they play Pitt. Most would rather use the good team slot on Notre Dame or USC, etc.
After Pitt is done next year, Penn State will play Virginia Tech in 2020 then Auburn in 21 and 22. Those are much better games for Penn State than Pitt. If they win, they will help on a playoff resume and they also get PSU exposure in key recruiting areas.
