Plenty of blame to go around

The year we hired Tomlin we first interviewed a DC named Ron Rivera (now the coach of the panthers). This satisfied the "Rooney Rule". I cannot say wether Tomlins race or the Rooneys political view had any influence in Coach Tomlins hire or not, but to say it was directly because of satisfying the "Rooney Rule" is false.

FYI, ive calling for Tomlins fire since 2010.

It isn't just about the Rooney Rule. Yes, interviewing Rivera filled the rule. However, Rooney didn't want to look like a hypocrite. He didn't interview ONE non-minority from the outside. Whiz had left because it was obvious that Rooney wasn't going to hire him. All this happened in 15 days or probably less. He wasn't trying to satisfy the "Rooney Rule". He wanted a minority because for over a decade he'd been at the forefront of pushing teams to interview and hire minorities. I remember I was shocked when the false report of Grimm's hire was reported. I knew from the second that Cowher left that the new coach was going to be a minority.

Oh Omar, you're so witty.

You are probably one of the coolest guys that you know.

know what would have gotten your point across even better?

Wtf?

You are preaching to the chior. I thought Whisenhunt got the shaft when they hired Tomlin over him. Then I think he got a bad rap when Kurt Warner retired and he was stuck with Leinart and other scrubs to try to get a passing game. I mean look what he did with the Chargers last year and look how he throttled the Chiefs week one. I think he and Mike Mularkey are pretty good offensive coaches (he's the OC in Tennessee now) and we don't know what we have until it's gone. Mularkey who had Tommy Maddox and Kordell Stewart at QB won games. Whisenhunt took Roethlisberger his rookie year to break records. Now we have Tomlin...

So Whisenhunt had no say in who his QB's were after Warner? How is it that everything that happens down to the stale popcorn at Heinz Field is Mike Tomlin's fault but people are so eager to hand out a pass to someone else. I think the Steelers made the right choice at the time. I was never overly impressed with Whiz as a head coach either. He's an awesome offensive coordinator though.

i don't get why is whisenhunt OR tomlin...like there couldn't possibly be another option.

Fair,

What I see is a team that is going through a complete overhaul. One that typically takes a team 2 to 3 to complete. It looks like we are in year 2 and have yet to go through a real rough stretch, despite what some spoiled fans would say.

I have no idea how the young defense will progress. I see some progress from JJ and hope that Shaz and Tuitt fill the role.
I have no idea how the offense will fare going forward. But I see a young RB who is becoming a star and a WR heading toward the upper echelon
of WRs.

Yea, there are definitely concerns and a great deal of questions. But the team has not acquiesced, even in a stout division such as ours. So I am willing to be patient not only with the coaches, but with the players.

Year 2???! Have you not watched the last 3???! This is year 4 of his destruction, sorry I mean overhaul, of this organization.

Matt Leinart was a first round flop who was picked in 2006 the year BEFORE Whiz was hired. He was stuck with Leinart. The team isn't going to invest another first round pick in QB when just a year earlier Denny Green picked Leinart. So no he did not have a say in his QB he had to try to mold Leinart into an NFL QB which he was not. I think if Warner stays on 2 years longer Whiz is still the head coach.

Exactly! It wasn't about "satisfying" the Rooney rule it was about "progressive" thinking and hiring a minority no matter what. Like I said skin color shouldn't matter it should be hiring the best person for the job but the Rooney's used skin color to determine who they would hire.

Youre right-

Because there is soo much actual football being discussed on this board now-a-days.

Might as well combine the "God and Government" with the "Football only"

So you continue to post stupid videos and admit to wanting to rattle Franco's cage and then complain about the lack of football talk? Many on here are talking real football.

So far not counting preseason the team has played 2 quarters of good offensive football, one quarter of fair offensive football, and five quarters of suck *** offensive football. So far the team has played 2 quarters of good defensive football, 4 quarters of fair defensive football and 2 quarters of suck *** football. Do not confuse fair with good it is not how ever it is better than suck ***.

I expect a lousy season this year as the team is rebuilding. The big issue will be how this bunch of rookies and one year players impact the team this year. The old guard will be gone before the team is good simply because it has so many players that were drafted that have not turned out well. In reality the team needs to find another dozen players that can become the new core for the team. The last several drafts were not that good, although this one shows some promise. The big question on MT will be answered this season. We should begin to see some activations from this draft class as they learn their positions and get better at their game, simply because there is generally **** playing in front of them. I think the Rooneys may realize they are at a cross roads with their head coach, either he takes the next step in development or its time to part ways. The team is rebuilding it will be rebuilt in the image of the coach. If the coach doesn't get it he will surround himself with like minded players who also don't get it.

Had the team not been going into a major rebuild year brought on by some horrendous selections in Tomlin's early years they might be able to post pone the decision for a few more seasons. Point is the team will need to be given a major overhaul and if you are thinking that MT will not be the guy you keep long term you need to put in the new coach and have him conduct the rebuild. It might be that we already have the next coach on our team to take over as head coach.

Right now I would consider 4 coaches as possible for replacing MT already on the team, Todd Haley, Mike Munchak, Kieth Butler, and Carnell Lake. Haley and Munchak have experience as head coaches as well as knowledge of the team. Butler has been a long time coach with the Steelers and they are keeping him for something. Lake has been a highly skilled player and coach for Pittsburgh and has a great understanding of the game. Chuck Noll was a player and coach. Cowher was a player and coach. Two of the four have done that. The steelers have lots of assistants that could fill in at the next level. I do not count Dick Lebeau here due to age and he may be on his last year anyway if not he might stay till he drops dead. I do not believe the scheme has passed him by he just no longer has players that can get it done.

Should the steelers interview those four guys they have met the Rooney rule. If they choose one of those guys they can transition very easily and would likely not have to find anything but a competent assistant coach. I would not be surprised or maybe shocked is the better term to see Butler as the next head coach. We might even see Woodson who was interning on the way back as a coach and one of the guys bumped up to Lebeau's assistant. I would also not be surprised to see some new blood in the front office people as well. Aaron Smith was in training as a scout and could also be brought back into the front office personnel.

I think there is a possibility that we see a shake up of the staff this year. There is also the possibility that the team decides to give MT a few more chances just so they can be sure he is not finally ready to be the coach they hoped he would become. This might be quite a transition year for the team in more ways than one.
