Pound the Table - Love or Hate

Picking a QB in 1 is always a very risky endeavor. Just the nature of a complex assessment that has a decent fail rate. It is what it is. In the Steelers situation as I have said multiple times, you keep swinging until you hit. You have a Omar and Andy for a reason. Lean on them and you ultimately have to have faith in your team’s evaluation.
Sure. But what you cannot do this year is take one in the first because you want one. You can't take second, third and maybe later round talent in the first. Because what will happen is player gets most or all of this year to sit behind soneone. Then two full years of opportunity as a "first rounder" after that. So a miss is three years to get right back where you are now. I don't think Ward is a bona fied first much less the rest of them. So take the best one left in the third. If somehow fate thrusts him into the position to start this year and he looks really good. Great don't draft one next year. But most likely take one in the first next year and either way hopefully you got your guy.

So what happens if next year, these QB's that are supposed to be better, aren't? What if Manning decides to stay in school? There are so many variables that are out of your control. You can't pin your hopes on "next year". And I was one of those guys early on in the draft process that wasn't taking a QB this year at all. But just look at the Iamaleava situation. He was one of the talked about QB's for next year. A late transfer, now lots of questions over who he is as a person, is it him, is it his dad, do you want that drama...and after all the off the field issues, he's going to a new school, later in the transfer process, with a new offense, new players to throw to. Chances are, with the extra scrutiny, he won't live up to the lofty expectations. As I said, anything can happen.

If there's a QB that you like as a FO in the first, you better take him. The most important position in football, and we are in limbo.

The Steelers did this just a couple of years ago.

With Kenny Pickett, they drafted a 3rd Round QB in the 1st Round and then developed him into a 5th Round QB.

And that's what KP was a polarizing pick. Sone graded first others second, some third and lower. QBs get overdraft because of importance and need to start with.

I definitely drank the Kool aid that year but they also did a horrific job developing him.
And this is why they shouldn't use a first on a QB this year. If either Sanders or Dart are there at 21, I'm not taking either and trying to trade back for a late round first and gaining a second.
I'd rather have a sure thing at DL or DB than trust them to develop a questionable first round talent QB.

You could say this at every position , Steelers have struggled lately. Naturally they would struggle at the most complex position to draft.

Still this isn’t the same people who drafted Kenny. Fields did better under Smith than his former. He was the acquisition that needed development.

You draft BPA if that is QB you pull the trigger.

Nothing will prevent the team from nose diving under Mike. So should they not draft? No you stock pile talent. If things are equal you draft your premium position. Nothing is more vital than the QB position.

Sure do not reach but BPA your needs.

I am in no way saying that this WILL be the outcome, but... all of this was said about one TJ Watt as well.
I was pounding the table for him.

Good reference.

This year I am pounding the table for a new HC.

But seeing how that is a pipe dream give me BPA at DT, QB, and RB. Then at T, CB, and DE.

Story this morning on this site that Steelers have Jalen Milroe as their highest rated QB in this class.

Are the Steelers going to run the Wishbone Offense? Has anyone watched him at Alabama?

Throws a good deep ball and runs like a RB because he is built like a RB. But his short and intermmediate throws are simply terrible. His processing in the pass game is terrible. I have nothing against Milroe as a person so hope I'm not sounding too harsh but he is a bigger development project than was Kenny Pickett coming out of college. If they draft him at 21, that sets this franchise back another 3-4 years.

The variables and amount of finish on say a Corner is far more then a QB. And this coaching group has produce plenty of talented players in other positions in many variety of round. And the cost of missing at DB or DL is insignificant compared to Q.

None of this should sway away from BPA approach including QB. You don’t draft with what percentage of fail rate per position is the lowest. That would get you a high degree of talent deficiencies at those high fail rate positions.

Not sure if you got those rates from a website but I haven’t seen any recent compilations.

Regardless you draft to bring talent in at all positions and especially your most deficient. It is what the Steelers will do.

You can pencil in round 1 for a DT, QB, or RB.

Let us see if they prove me wrong.

The mere fact that an article the day before the draft states the "Steelers are quietly targeting Milroe in the draft" tells me it's smoke and mirrors and fake news unless they mean if he's still there in the third or fourth and they have not picked a QB yet. Milroe, and the NFL, seem to think he's going in the first since they invited him to the draft. I really hope it's not the Steelers.

The Steelers need to draft BPA, not best athlete available that might some day develop into a lesser version of Larmar. Unless we are trading for the Ravens coaching staff, I'm not counting on the current staff being able to develop a raw QB or implement a similar type of offense that Lamar runs. A Ravens offense that actually tends to stall more than succeed in big playoff games (3-5 with no super bowl). We already have an offensive scheme that can't win playoff games. Why would the Steeles want to copy the Ravens and Lamar since they are also another team that has an offensive scheme that often does not translate in playoff games?

I really hope they don't take Milroe over the BPA in the first if someone that could really make a difference this year like Emmanwori is still on the board. If they take Milroe over Dart or Sanders, if they are available at the pick, it had better be a home run. Worst case scenario in this draft for me is if the Steelers mortgage this or future drafts to move up from 21 in the first and take Milroe (or Sanders).

I'll pound the table the other way....STOP WASTING 1st round picks for trenches & use this draft capital on "Playmakers"

NFL AND NBA Rules are designed for the offense, start using your HIGH DRAFT CAPITAL on "SKILLED PLAYERS" or you will get left behind

Our offense has been offensive for too long
