Pre-Season Week 1 Observations.....

I can't believe I'm saying this, but according to camp stats he is the most accurate of the QB, and the best down field passer, who's average catch per completion is noticeably higher than Trubisky and much high than Pickett's. Why is that? He threw more TD's too. The other qb's have been mostly check down passers. Now I'm not saying he should start. For openers that's because we know who he is. A back up QB. Secondarily we gave a big deal in free agency to Turbisky and spent or first round pick on Pickett. Thirdly he is a free agent next year, and will demand a lot of money if he's then man in Pittsburgh.
I hope we didn't just cite training camp stats...

False he has only had one bad regular season game since 2019. Yes it is practice but by Williamson and Lolley's reporting he was the best in camp at throwing guys open and hitting tight windows. In games that would come with playing regularly with a consistent receiving corps, something he was far from having in 2019 and even in the Lions game as they were dropping balls and fumbling. I am not saying to start him as he isn't the best fit for Canadas scheme but I truly believe at this minute he is the most refined passer on the team. Hopefully Pickett surpasses him but I am less confident in the pocket passing of Trubisky. He has to have limited reads and be put on the move, which is what seemingly Canada does best.
What is false about the statement? We have all seen Rudy play and struggle in the red zone. Sorry not hanging my hat on what someone reports when they are playing preseason vanilla defense. I get you are rooting for the guy, but really don't see him as the most refined passer. What I see is a comfort level within the scheme due to how long he has been in it in comparison.

He has had his opportunities yet isn't leading the pack for a reason.

It is because he is only an average backup. Slightly above average at best. This guy isn't a long term starter.

Bush is awful. And to make it worse, he looks disinterested. He was asked if this was a make or break year and his answer was basically - who cares somebody will pay me next year.

The worst part is the steelers pretty much have to play Bush. Spillane will get abused in coverage. Robinson isn't ready. Maybe the steelers can make a trade. I don't mean Roquan Smith. I can't see them paying that much for an ILB. But they don't need a star. They just need a LB who isn't a complete liability against run or pass. A guy who can cover a bit and just be in the right place and take on blocks in the run game.

I felt Rudolph was the best QB in that game. Why? Because he made the only tough throw of the night. That was a great throw to Pickens. Rudolph did show a bit of mobility to extend a few plays as well. Trubisky didn't play long and his TD was on a blown coverage. Pickett had an impressive debut for a rookie, but there were a ton of easy throws and he didn't push it downfield.

Snell will or won't make this team for blocking and special teams. As an offensive player, he's behind McFarland and Warren and probably Teague. McFarland is making the team. They don't have another back like him. Warren had a fumble. He has to clean that up. He showed some upside as a receiver. If the OL is still shaky, Snell could make the team just on pass protection.

I already bet on Pickens to win rookie of the year. BTW Kenny Pickett is the favorite right now. Pickett is a natural. He has strong hands and seems to glide.

The OL wasn't terrible but not great either. Hopefully just communication issues.

GREAT post

I can see the STEELERS moving on from Snell in a RB standpoint but it's his STs & like you said (poor OL) his backfield blocking ability.

There are going to be some head scratchers on cuts and final roster so I'm looking forward to see final team.

Salute the nation

All 3 QBs threw short almost exclusively. Trubisky was 0-2 on deep throws. Rudolph was 1-1 and the TD. Pickett was 0-1. Trubisky and Rudolph looked for downfield opportunities before checking down. Pickett did not look downfield very much and threw quickly. Pickett had 5 completions of 3 yards or less.
Your numbers are simply wrong. Trubisky was 1-3 on downfield throws, including 19 yards (13 +6 yards deep in the endzone) on the touchdown. Rudolph was not 1-1, he was 1-2 with that wide throw to Pickens that was uncatchable out of bounds.

Trubisky did not throw short "almost exclusively," because 3 of his 7 passes were at least 19 yards past the line of scrimmage.
Pickett's weakness is that he holds the ball too long. He did it at Pitt and reports are that he's done that all camp too. Maybe they wanted him working on quick throws in the game and that's why it was all short, quick throws. Good debut but nothing to wet your pants over in terms of difficulty. People complained how Ben threw too short and that was holding back the offense. Pickett does exactly that same thing and it's a great performance.
That's complete bull ****. When's the last time Ben had an 87% completion percentage? Or a 133 QB rating? I'll tell you: Week 10 in the 2018 season. You know, back when he was still a very good quarterback? With all the myriad of short throwing last season, Ben managed one game with a completion percentage higher than 70%. But yeah, they look exactly the same out there. lol

Pickett didn't "hold back the offense," he led the team to two touchdowns in a half, including the game-winner. And he made plays with his legs, something Ben hasn't dreamed about doing in a long, long time.
So yes, on this short sample of 3 QBs, i do think that single play by Rudolph is enough to say he had the best game because that was really the only difficult completion of the game.

That's no statement that Mason should be QB 1, just that in this one game he was the only QB to really make a special throw.
And I will continue to think how myopic and unwise that statement is and will always be.

Yes, Rudolph has only had one bad game since 2019. I like how you failed to mention that he's only started two games since 2019.

You crack me up, man. lol

But he appeared in a few more games… He had several picture perfect kneel downs to end games in 2020… he is a perfect closer to save an old QB’s knees 😂
