Roquan Smith signs with Rats, 5 yrs, $100M

I think they may seriously try to trade him… they aren’t just letting him walk away for a comp pick

If he's a free agent they can tag him and he can just not sign it. He could pull a Bell. I personally think they should sign him to a 10 year 500 million dollar contract. Cut who you must and restructure the rest.

That way the Steelers have a guaranteed 2 wins every year..;)

Tag and trades happen occasionally…

Rats have designed their team to be QB'ed by Jackson. Their entire offensive approach - massive but somewhat immobile linemen, focus on TE and deep passes in passing game, lots of designed QB runs, genuine read-option - is based on having a guy as mobile as LJ.

I hope they sign him and they continue that approach because it doesn't work. They will be @#$%ed with cap issues for the next four seasons if they pay him $40 million per and Roquan $20 million per. Jesus, more than 25% cap space on two guys?
I'm not sure there is an offense in the league where the scheme is more tied to the QB than it is in Baltimore.

The second he wasn't signed to a long-term deal before the season a trade become a serious consideration. Teams don't let franchise QBs go without a long-term deal this long. I wouldn't mind if they did sign him, though.

I don't think Lamar is going to get what he wants. Two years in a row plagued by injuries. They may tag him once or twice.
The Rats are in a predicament. They catered their offense around an elite running back that throws the ball. But now when he gets a sprained knee that any other QB would play through they have Jackson on the bench. Because his only value is his running ability. So they either tag him a couple of years and burn the tread off but with him completely not trying to get on the field a bruise would probably keep him out. Or trade him. If I am them I trade him. He has Lev Bell written all over him.

Word is, NYJ are going to go after Jackson HARD. If that’s true, that will be interesting indeed.
I cant picture this they spent a very early pick on a QB I doubt they would give up on him already. The Jets also have an elite WR in the making and I dont think Jackson would help his growth. Balt is certainly in an interesting situation. I do not think Balt can get close to what he wants w/o seriously crippling the whole team

the cheapest that contract can be is about 13M in the first year, just came back from spotrac.com and the rats have 48M available before this contract, so that leaves 35M to get Lamar and the rookie draft class while letting go Marcus Peters and Justin Houston. On the other hand, the franchise tag for a QB is projected to be 32M according to overthecap.com.

So in conclusion that leaves them with literally zero space to tag him, it seems like they'll give him a multi year contract to lower the cap hit on the 1st year
They have a lot of contracts they can push out if need be, but also remember that just cause smith signed a contract worth 20 mil per doesnt mean the cap hit is going to be 20 million this season…. It could be a big signing bonus with a very low salary so this years money is spread out over the duration, more or less

New York has already gone on record and essentially stated that they're going to be moving on from Zach Wilson, his days as a Jet are finished.

Good teams don’t quit early on QBs.. but the Jets aint a good team sooo.......

I mean in 2006 they spent a second on Kellen Clemens and a 4th on Brad Smith.
Three years later, in 09 They drafted Mark Sanchez in the first, and they stuck with him till they drafted Geno smith in the first in 2013..
by 2016 they invested a 2nd in Christian Hackenberg, but then just two years later drafted Sam Darnold (2018)Spent a 4th in 2020 on James Morgan, then drafted Wilson 2nd overall in 2021. so from 06-21 they spent 8 4th or higher picks on a qb, not counting the free agents they brought in for the position along the way... so basically if these guys arent esablished by year 2 they are looking to cut bait...

and where has that quick hook gotten them? Darnold had a better season in carolina than any jets QB had in New York... Gen smith showed he definitely had the ability, but never ever got another real shot after the Jets benched him after two years starting.... you dont think the jets will jump at another QB since wilson didnt make an impact year 2?

If the guaranteed money is 60M shouldn't they spread equally through the contract? 12M per year?

How about his days with the girlfriend’s mom ?

Nah it can be guaranteed salaries or voidable years too… so you can move money all over… like watsons contract … its all guaranteed but the cap hit varies from year to year

I think Mahomes has something similar as well.

So lets say he got 30 million as a signing bonus… that would evenly break down as six million each year against the cap… but then the salary could be 1 million the first year, but then tge remaining 69 staggered over tge next few years, with a big salary year 2 and year three and four’s salaries guaranteed for another 30 million or so .. thats pretty standard stuff now… that makes his cap hit 7 million that first year then the second year can get pushed out by converting it to a bonus later and not affect year 1

The first year of any major contract is always a minimum salary with a big signing bonus. The cap hits start in year 2, because you can't slide the remaining $70M around if 30M is the signging bonus, the remaining $70M has to be structured salary.

Fully Guaranteed money ($45M) just means that amount will be paid in the first 2 years. The $60M in total guarantees sounds like year 3 being a quasi guaranteed year as well. I'd estimate the contract to look something like this:

2023 $28M Signing Bonus $2M Salary $7.6M Cap
2024 $15M Salary $20.6M Cap
2025 $15M Salary $20.6M Cap
2026 $20M Salary $25.6M Cap
2027 $20M Salary $25.6M Cap

The numbers should fluctuate a bit from here, but this is a $100M 5yr contract with $45M Guaranteed in 2yrs and $60M in 3yrs.

Structured this way, it's good for the Ravens who can cut bait in 2026 with only an $11.2M dead cap.

There can also be a year 2 roster bonus which is basically like a signing bonus that doesn’t count year one, since tge cap hit is too high to cut him before it is activated… and tgey almost always convert some of the first salary into a signing bonus in the second year pushing that evenly out across the remainder of the contract… so in Strykers example, tgey convert 13 million of tgat second year salary into bonus money… that gets spread out to an additional 3.25 a year, but that second year drops from a 20.6 cap hit to just under 11. Some teams have a larger cap hit that second year in the expectation that is going to happen

Even so - signing Lamar would be so Jet like.

Doesn't look good for Lamar Sunday and if he is playing it would be with a brace and probably as little running as possible. So who are you taking in a drop back passing game. Action Jackson or Burrows? He has a 68 passer rating 3 TD 5 Int in 4 playoff games. Plus I'm thinking he is protecting himself from injury with no contract. Ravens meet rock and its friend hard place.

Roquan was a DGD. But he’s a raven now. Hope Pickett torches his arse like a 4th of july kid with free reign to the works

The Jets aren't going to be patient with Saleh and that QB situation is a mess. I could absolutely see them making a move for Lamar. They have a talented young receiver and a potentially very good young RB. They're missing a QB and Jackson would be an instant fix for this specific team.

I prefer Action Jackson to be resigned to a very lucrative long term deal. I feel he is the right man for the job and I would like him to stay.
