The real problem is...while most coaches and FO guys will take a 'stud' like Timmons (regardless of where he was originally drafted to play) with the #15 pick all day long, he wasn't/isn't a fit for the 'Buck' position. He is a natural 'Mack', as are Spence and Shazier. Williams might be our only true 'Buck' LB, who has similar qualities (and physical limitations) as Foote. There weren't many 'Mack' types in this draft who were much different than what we have in Williams. Therefore, we went with another 'Mack' who may be able to read, react and set the alignment more capably than Timmons by the end of the year. Spence is another candidate who has the same 'gift' with lesser size (and now mobility...possibly).
Timmons very well may be viewed as expendable at some point IF Williams can take over the 'Buck' capably OR we end up with 2 equally capable 'Macks' who could be interchanged at the 'Buck' until an ideal suitor comes along. It's not implausible for this to happen as we are already planning on going into this season with 2 'Mack' LBs manning the 2 positions. It will have it's drawbacks BUT also allow DL to improvise a bit with his blitz packages too.
The "great" Ray Lewis, who every pundit agrees is a hall of famer, had 19.5 sacks his first 7 years.
the "great" Patrick Willis, who many pundits agree is one of the best LBers in the NFL, has 20.5.
Timmons has 26, despite not starting his first year, which the other two did (Lewis 13 games, Willis, a full 16.)
Willis also has like 700 tackles and 50 passes defended. Its probably not double what Timmons has but I bet is at least its 50% more in each case. There is no comparison between Willis and Timmons, except to say that Timmons is not as good as Willis. This is not to say that Timmons sucks because I would put him in the top 5-10 at this position but Willis is an elite player, one of the best in the league. Sure, Willis will not have the same numbers as earlier in his career but thats because playing next to Bowman (before injury) means he is being asked to do less for the benefit of the team. Anyway, before Bowman had his injury it could be argued that he was the best LB in the league and Willis second or third. There is one thing that Timmons has over any LB I remember in a LONG time is that he does not miss games. I cant even remember him missing a game in 5 years - truly amazing with all he is asked to do.
