Seems like a strong year at QB within the college ranks.

But say the Steelers season goes south (not a stretch) and they are staring at a top 5 pick.

Do they need to draft a

QB
WR
CB
pass rusher

?

what possibly who and why ?

obviously with below the line performances

this team needs a cleaning from the top down, but draft wise what direction should they go in

?

If we don't get a new head coach it won't matter who we pick.

I'd say the best on the board of those positions. Yea, that's vague, but our holes are great and are many. I'd say CB or QB, but only if the pick, player and spot is justified. Hard to tell in Oct.

Pass rusher. We still have Ben. We can get a corner in round 2 and 3. I'll stick with martavis and Wheaton right now. Pass rush is huge especially in today's NFL.

They will just take the best Tampa 2 defender and force him into the 3-4 where it will take him 3 years to become an average starter.

I would love to get a qb but don't think there is a good one in the draft this year so best player available. An elite pass rusher would do wonders for this defense

Is this the blow it up and start over scenario we are talking about then?
Or at least the close the door on the Roethlisberger era early scenario?

If so one option they must consider (due dilegence) if they have a top 5 pick is: trade Ben.
Is this a strong QB draft class?
If so and you have a top 5 pick then you have to at least think about trading Ben for another top pick +more picks.
Stop the painful quicksand slow reload/retool and go for a complete rebuild.

This option also gives them the excuse the need to keep the current management & coaches around for another 5 years...they stay for the "rebuild".
Fans might not like it at first (and I would hate it for a long time) but the sports media in Pittsburgh is already paid off to sell and spin any message the club wants.

Heck people are already saying this is what they have planned right now, end the Ben era early.

None of this is my preference, just trying look at this objectively, figure out all options.

If the team is picking top 5 this year and new coach on board we need to go with either Ben's future replacement, or Left tackle. Which ever is the better of the two. In all likely hood next year we will be picking very high again and can address the other either left tackle or QB. Second round go with corner or linebacker or lineman keep filling in with best player available till we end up with a good line and qb. After that begin with skill positions.

Steelers need a LB or CB more, but if they are drafting top 5 you have to take a QB. We all saw how long it took to replace Bradshaw.
I would love the uproar on this board if they could take Jameis Winston.

Pass rusher or elite cover guy. If neither are there then the best O-lineman.

Defense is more than one player away from being fixed. A pass rusher would be a great help, but lets get the offense going and take a big-time receiver.

Oh man if they took Winston I dont think I would be a fan anymore. He is everything I hate about spoiled athletes. I think its BS the RB from Georgia is not playing and Winston barely gets a slap on the wrist. Winston is being investigated for the same thing along with his other off field issues. I do not think the Steelers would stoop that low to take him and I dont think Winston is mentally bright either football wise or maturity wise.
Back on topic I dont think a pass rusher will be the best choice. A pass rusher can be negated while and elite corner negates someone on the other team. Besides QBs get rid of the ball so fast now that I dont see a high end rusher changing the outcome of games. We absolutely have to have an elite corner

But we haven't had an elite CB since Woodson and the D has been great, this defense needs great LB's.

I say best player available ! If QB, take him, if CB, take him, If OL, take him. We need help everywhere so it would be hard to take a wrong pick, unless its a reach!!!!

I think a question that could come up is this:

The Steelers will likely be drafting in the top-10 to 15, and IF salary discussions with Roethlisberger are at an impass, would we consider Jameis Winston?

I know the guy's a knucklehead, but he does have talent, size and arm ability.

If Winston falls to us in draft, knowing we have a 34 year old quarterback with some wear and tear and looking for a new contract, is it a question that comes up in the draft room (either by Colbert, Tomlin or someone else)?

I agree to a point, but the league is a passing league now. When the D was good we also had Ike in his prime along with troy and competent 2nd and 3rd Cbs. Now Gay is probably our best Cb which is really sad. I think that pass rushing specialists are easier to find in later rounds than top tier Cbs.

you are willing to take on a possible problem at your most critical position?

I would think the club would go in a different direction in light of Ben's past issues.

early but I think there should be talent sitting there at that position if that's the path the Steelers wanted to go...........

If they end up with a top 10 selection, my hope is that they come out of it with a quality OT or pass rusher. With that being said, I really hope it's not Tombert making the pick, as based on their track record, there's a great chance they'd **** it up.

Here is the biggest problem with Tomlin. They won't go 6-10. Because he won't make an all in move like firing Haley. They will win enough games against **** opponents and go 8-8. Which is worse than 6-10. Unless you like mediocrity.

We are already 1 - 1 against the dregs of the league - 2 - 2 if you count the Browns. Which of the remaining 3 teams on our schedule would you figure we're going to beat to get to 6 - 10?
