if true, this just needs to become a Williams route
It will be interesting to see if that happens and the ball distribution. If Williams can continue to prove his worth, it should open things up much more for Pickens, Austin and Freiermuth.
It seems more of a product of poor wide receivers rather than intentional. In 2019, 2020, and 2021 when there was a legit 1-2 pairing at wide receiver, the top two produced pretty good (or at least comparable) numbers. The Steelers don't have a true WR2 so their numbers will follow. The stats are below. It will be interesting to see if that happens and the ball distribution.
DK has been saying all year in Smiths offense WR2 is mainly a blocker with 5-6 targets max a game, and the offense is based around running, WR1, a few deep shots, and the tight ends.
With Russ I dont see a ton of TE usage and it seems like all WRs are getting distribution equal to or maybe more than the TEs.
Hopefully Williams gets enough balls to help us and to stay happy and engaged
Good point. Not sure if Williams is a legit WR2or notIt seems more of a product of poor wide receivers rather than intentional. This isn't much different than in 2014 when the Steelers had Markus Wheaton as WR2. Brown led the way followed by Miller and Bell. Wheaton only had 53 receptions, which was 13 fewer than Miller.
2019
AJ Brown 52 receptions (84 targets)
Corey Davis 43 receptions (69 targets)
2020
AJ Brown 70 receptions (106 targets)
Corey Davis 65 receptions (92 targets)
2021
Russell Gage 66 receptions (94 targets) in 14 games
Olamide Zaccheaus 31 receptions (53 targets)--who???
NOTE: Calvin Ridley had 31 receptions (52 targets) in 5 games
2022
Drake London 72 receptions (117 targets)
Olamide Zaccheaus 40 receptions (61 targets)--again, who???
2023
Drake London 69 receptions (110 targets)
Mack Hollins 18 receptions (30 targets) in 13 games--who?
Meh...you either have the hands that are great or you don't. AB was well under 6 ft. One inch taller than Austin. Dude caught everything.Shorter WRs will always have a problem hauling in an over-the-shoulder pass on the sidelines or in the end zone/corner; the covering DB may or may not be taller but he (the DB) becomes an extra impediment to the receiver's ability to track the ball. Pickens, Williams, and even Jefferson have the height to excel for those balls,. Give Austin, Roman (if he ever sees the field), Scotty, etc. the slants and speed/seam routes.
