Two contracting firms have already pitched a similar plan to the Department of Homeland Security.

President Donald Trump pitched congressional leaders on placing solar panels on his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, Politico and Axios reported Tuesday.

Trump’s suggestion reportedly came during a meeting with GOP House and Senate leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), at the White House on Tuesday afternoon. Trump said the electricity generated by the panels could help offset the expense of the wall

Trump said his vision was a wall 40 feet to 50 feet high and covered with solar panels so they’d be “beautiful structures,” the people said. The President said that most walls you hear about are 14 feet or 15 feet tall but this would be nothing like those walls.

Trump's Mexican border wall: See the proposals

The wall along the Mexican border doesn't have to be made of boring concrete slabs.

It might be a "smart wall" filed with fiber optic cables designed to detect anyone trying to climb over or tunnel underneath it. Or it could resemble a medieval castle, with a notched top and turrets. It could be made of solar panels, or even be a work of art.

It's unfortunate solar panels usually have to face south or I kind of like the idea.

I have said before if we get rid of the stupid sediment and erosion control over-regulation we have in place when building houses, we could instead invest in every house in the southwest with solar panels and keep the price of the houses the same. Every new house built that is more than 2000 SF should have to have solar panels in Arizona, southern CA, Nevada and New Mexico (hell, we should probably talk about Texas too).

There really is no reason not to do it. The problem is the left just wants to ADD solar panel regulations without giving up something in return to keep houses cheap. I propose we eliminate some of regulations that were relevant in the 1970's and 1980's that have become obsolete and ineffective in exchange for new regulations that apply to the 21st century.

Nah, the Left will be thankful because spray painting by the Mexicans will thwart the refractive rays of the sun which could potentially zap and wound, or, God forbid kill, endangered horny toad species living and flourishing along the wall.

Here's a fun thought. Place solar panels on the border wall facing south. Then sell the generated electricity to Mexico.

In this scenario, Mexico would actually be paying for the border wall!! (and we wouldn't get hit on higher cost of goods due to tariffs!)

I was going to suggest exactly the same thing. The wall becomes an almost humanitarian effort to supply cheap power to Mexicans and it funds the wall.
