A few highlights from the other guy involved in the trade.
What are the chances Ramsey pulls a Rod Woodson and finishes out his career at safety? I've read some think he could be an all pro at the position.
One thing this board is consistent at, is members no matter how good or bad they are, have a tendency to read things that were never said...Ramsey is a better and more versatile player than Minkah. The defense is better with Ramsey instead of Minkah. Why is that hard to grasp?
As for the cap impact, who cares? Steelers are in great shape with the cap.
Why should the steelers wet their pants about their #3 safety? Go look at depth charts and the #3 safety on each team and then tell me which team is all set with a great #3 safety just ready to go.
Ramsey can and likely will be a hybrid player with the steelers. I don't care about the position label. It's about getting your 5 best DBs on the field in nickel. The 5 best DBs are Porter, Ramsey, Slay, Eliot, Thornhill.
The steelers improved their team and they did not give away any of their high picks for next year when they clearly seem to be targeting their QB.
Probably they will sign at least 1 FS before TC.One thing this board is consistent at, is members no matter how good or bad they are, have a tendency to read things that were never said...
First, I never said that Ramsey wasn't good, or that I wasn't glad that we were able to get Ramsey. The issue is weakening one position to strengthen a position that we had already addressed in FA. We also aren't talking about a number 3 safety, we are potentially talking about a starting free safety. Again, Thornhill WAS a solid player for the Chiefs, but he went to Cleveland and for two years in a row suffered from the same injury and forced him to miss 12 games.
Ramsey being a "hybrid" player doesn't fix the hole at FS, because as a hybrid player, you want him to be around the ball and the play as much as possible, and that is not 20 yards off the LOS playing the last line of defense.
Why is that so hard to grasp for you people, you all put words in my mouth, read into things that aren't there...
As for the cap impact, it was relevant to my original argument that the Steelers did not trade one highly paid player for another highly paid player to sit back as the last line of defense.
Why is THAT so hard to grasp? I'm not speaking french here...I just want to know what they plan on doing at FS, because the 4 safeties on the roster, 3 of them being STRONG SAFETIES, don't exactly instill a ton of confidence in being a consistent and reliable last line of defense

This is the same team that used Van Jefferson as a WR2 last year and then traded for Mike Williams only to never use him. It's also a team that waits until late summer after prices skyrocket to re-sign veteran players rather than get ahead of the game.Furthermore of those 4 safeties one is basically STs only (an ace there but not someone you want to see on defensive snaps) and the other an undrafted rookie.
The only FS being injury prone as of late is definitely a major concern as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
Ramsey was brought in to play CB this year not S, if he ends up playing a lot of S it means they dropped the ball addressing the hole on the roster which is now FS (and still swing tackle).
They are Extremely thin at a few spots that can easily derail a team. Generally that FS keeps the secondary communication together so the SS can thump. I’m actually surprised they haven’t had any of the free agent FS in yet. I would have had visits lined up with 2-3 of em before putting pen to paper on that deal.
But I believe in being proactive rather than just creating holes on a roster and hoping something works out or that the injury situation works out perfectly. Contingency plans are nice to have.
Simmons or Blackmon would both provide starter potential (likely beating Thornhill for the job) and neither would be that expensive at this stage of free agency. What the hell is the hold up?
Not to mention williams comes in makes a big play only to barely see the field again. This is the same team that used Van Jefferson as a WR2 last year and then traded for Mike Williams only to never use him. No trouble with reading, but I'm just reading more bullshlt. You weren't replying to anyone. It was an independent post where you were "still processing this trade." Then you later went on to characterize any claims that the Steelers could move Ramsey to safety as "laughable." You do understand the difference between could and will, don't you?Since you have trouble reading.
The bold statement was you need a back up plan for Thornhill. The posts that I were replying to about moving Ramsey to FS was NOT about him filling in, but moving him PERMANENTLY. Which my response was, you don't make that player of player trade if that was the intent. Minkah has played very well the last few years, doing what the coaches have asked him to do. The splash plays haven't been there, but it's still been solid play. And when you take your play making safety, that has been roaming more in the box and at worst 10 yards off the LOS, and move him to be the last line of defense because you're playing scared now, the splash plays will drop off. And putting a different all-pro player back in the same exactly position isn't going to change the results...So again, they didn't make the trade to move him.
Nah, boy. What you said was that the Steelers are about to pay Jalen Ramsey $26 million this year. Given that we can agree (!) Miami has already paid $7 million of his salary, it's just an incorrect statement, no matter how you continue to spin it.As for the money, you are wrong. The Dolphins paid him $7m this year, the Steelers added $1.5m bringing his guaranteed money this year to $26.6m, his cap hit for this year is actually $16.6m, add in the Minkah dead cap of $6.8m and this move costs us $23.4m in cap space this year. So pretty much exactly what it would have cost to keep Minkah.
Never said it was plan A, chief. Said that they would consider it if Thornhill gets hurt again. Pretty simple, really. Most children should be able to understand the concept.AND, you still need a viable back up for Thornhill, because Ramsey filling in at FS on a new defense shouldn't be your plan A, it should be plan B or C at best. Right now there are 4 safeties, 3 are SS.
I agree we weakened the back end but we already had serious issues on the front end stopping the dink and dunk which neutralized Minkah. By bringing in JR we may have bolstered the front of the secondary to help stop the dink and dunk. Our pass rush will be more effective if they try to go long and help compensate for the loss of Minkah. It is an easier position to fill. We will have to wait and see if it actually works. One thing this board is consistent at, is members no matter how good or bad they are, have a tendency to read things that were never said...

They should trade Ramsey for another tightend.
Yes that was sarcasm
You're referencing two different posts. I didn't hit "quote", but I was replying to ALL the people saying we would just move Ramsey to FS. And Ramsey's cap hit for 2025 is evidently still in flux, depending on how the Steelers decide to structure the rest of his contract. Most likely, the highest the number will be is 16.661. Spotrac is currently estimating it on the low end at 5.316. Others are guessing around 8. We'll see.

The players are there to help the dink and dunk, but the coaches are also still here to live in their fears, which was why minkah was so far back and why the dink and dunk is always there.I agree we weakened the back end but we already had serious issues on the front end stopping the dink and dunk which neutralized Minkah. Bring back the killer Bs
With a whole new meaning and more street cred
AB may have to play with an ankle bracelet on work release...lol
AB may have to play with an ankle bracelet on work release...lol
So you’re sayin’ there’s a chance
And he’d be highly motivated too
And…bring back Martavis speaking of highly motivated!
Yep. Our entire D philosphy and scheme need reworked. Third and one our ILBers drop 10 yards from the LOS at the snap of the ball. We consistantly just give teams first downs. As someone stated on here.....if a drive lastS 12 plays....Tomlin and who ever our DC is simply think that we now have 12 plays for a TO.The players are there to help the dink and dunk, but the coaches are also still here to live in their fears, which was why minkah was so far back and why the dink and dunk is always there.
I would prefer Blackmon myself, because of his age. So that means, they'll be interested in Simmons, also because of his age lolThere is still time to bring in a veteran free agent at safety. Like I said in a previous post, I like Thornhill when he is healthy but I don’t trust that calf injury. Those seem to just linger. If they brought in either Simmons or Julian Blackmon as rentals and shore up the depth there.
With so many new players on both sides of the ball, I worry about continuity early in the season.
