Steelers Hiring Arthur Smith as new OC

Read an ESPN article that the Saints who have interviewed Klint Kubiak will make him their new OC.
Oh well! Either the Steelers or Kubiak had zero interest I suppose. Very disappointing since this is the guy I thought we should have targeted.

Was he injured this year? I ask because the stats say this was his worse performance since his rookie year. If he wasn't playing injured, I'd pause and take a deep dive into his game film before bringing him in. Otherwise, it's just a move because the OC is familiar with the QB.

Probably nearing the end of the road. But what better way but to go out with the one who brought out your best? Not a great crop of available QBs. So bring this one in and see if lightning strikes twice.

Sure he might not return to that form. He might be nothing but a backup at this point. I am willing to climb the hill to see what's on the other side.

Some Marines I knew when I was in the Navy used to say that. Usually another one would reply with something like: "An old, fat hooker and a case of the clap."
Not saying that's Tannehill, but .....

Depends on which Smith we see. The Titans or Falcons version. Which is why it makes it a difficult assessment.
Everything I've read from Falcons fans involved laughing at us for "stooping so low" and taking Smith. Take that with a grain of salt as they are Falcons fans...Atlanta..not exactly pro football Mecca. As others have pointed out he was good with the Titans his 2 years as OC.

I'm actually surprised so many fans are fine with this hire. Smith is a known rush-only coach. Isn't that what got us into this mess to begin with? Isn't he just perfectly playing the role of the "safe" OC, the typical Tomlin sh-- that so much of our ineptness is caused from? Isn't this the one guy who perfectly fits the "pee-your-pants" offensive approach that anchors this team to mediocracy at best? If the rush ain't working - as we have seen it may not - then what is a team that's 1970-1980-based supposed to do? Bend over and take it like we had to in the Bills' game?

So if our D isn't superhuman and keeping opponents to 10 or less points, we are sunk? What a majestic gameplan. No team is going to be able to defeat such a superb gameplan; I see so many Super Bowl championships out of such a brilliant plan.
I think the plan is to go with our strengths(,running game of course) while Kenny develops(if he develops.) Have him play the same type role Ben played in 04-05.

If they had managed to get Kubiak I bet they would have stuck to that same concept anyway.

Unless with Kubiak they would have brought in a vet like Wilson in an attempt to win it all quickly....
Which this team with it's incompetence at this time in it's history in the front office and the head coach position...yeah...no.

The mid 90's Steelers took that run first/strong defense concept all the way to the Super Bowl in 95. The Ravens mimicked the Steelers in 2000 with Trent Dilfer at QB and also got to and won the SB.

Not saying that would ever happen with Mikey running this team, but I'll bet that's the thinking. Maybe they'll at least win a playoff game.

My ears have heard the same thing, while listening to his press conference. Kenny was NOT anointed and neither was Mason. Keep in mind that Mason has a great relationship with all the brass at STEELERS headquarters. It seems Coach Tomlin is the only sour-puss on that topic.

I’m still 50 / 50 on the fair competition aspect due to Tomlin’s negativity towards Mason.

Salute the nation
Only a certifiable idiot would anoint KP given what he has put on tape…I agree, I didn’t hear that said either which is a good thing cuz it would suck to know a certified idiot is the top guy in charge. I know he ain’t a great owner by any means but I’d love to hold out hope that he’s not a certified idiot

Sure hope he figures it out in year 3, but he has shown absolutely nothing to make me think he takes a step past mid level QB2 and his light just magically turns on

Tomlin knows best.....but thanks for your take. With Tomlin's non-losing season history vs you on a message board ranting.....I will take Tomlin take EVERY TIME!!!!!!. SB BOUND!!!!!!

Smith isn't a bad hire at all. He was probably in the second tier of OCs I would've went after. Also, when you look at the other hires during this cycle, the Steelers did okay.

Falcons - Zac Robinson
Bills - Joe Brady (was interim OC)
Panthers - Brad Idzik
Bears - Shane Waldron
Bengals - Dan Pitcher
Browns - Ken Dorsey
Raiders - Luke Getsy
Chargers - Greg Roman (not official yet)
Rams - Mike Lafleur
Patriots - Alex Van Pelt
Saints - Klint Kubiak (not official yet)
Eagles - Kellen Moore
Steelers - Arthur Smith
Seahawks - OPEN
Buccaneers - Liam Coen
Titans - Nick Holz
Commanders - Kliff Kingsbury

Based on who was actually hired, how many of these OCs would you take over Arthur Smith?

Yeah not a exactly a Norv Turner or Even a Todd Haley among that bunch.

If we get enough more talent than other teams a playoff win is possible. But the one trend that we've seen - over and over - is Shades get outcoached when facing teams with similar talent levels and that's unlikely to change. In the last FIVE playoff games, we have AVERAGED giving up over 40 PPG. Read that again and think about it: last 5 playoff games, have AVERAGED giving up OVER 40 PPG. Not the last game, or the last 2, or even the last 3; the last FiVE. And that's with the most expensive D in the NFL. At the same time, this team spends the least on the OL. Way to go, Steelers.

Do you think, just maybe, Shades has been over-consumed with the Tampa team he was on that won mostly with defense? Just maybe? No one ever claimed Tomlin was a complex man. (Gildong, I'm not preaching to you, I know you are one of the fans who gets it.) :)

Kubiak but he probably saw a HC roadblock with the Steelers. If that is his ultimate goal.

Arians is the only assistant coach who landed a HC gig after being in Pgh and it was NOT from his days in Pgh but what he did after that got him the gig. Working with Tomlin is a black hole to getting a HC gig. Shades has been a HC for 17 years and how many HC came from him? After 17 years? Oh but the media ignores that when talking their Tomlin praise talk.

He has some spiffy looking shades though. I hear Ponch is mad and wants them returned pronto.

I don't get why this is such a horrible thing (keep in mind, I'm in the Tomlin needs to go crowd), but Belichick had a bunch of guys become head coaches, and most if not all flamed out badly. As stated before, some coaches are great coordinators and horrible head coaches. It's not a great way to measure success.

to your point, Bill Cowher had 8or 9 head coaches on his staff. not to many of them did much. Ariens did well. who else? Lewis had a long career but not much succes

In itself it's not all that much a point but it IS indicative of how much the rest of the league respects your means and message. Look at McVey in LA, for instance. Tomlin's lack of virtually any assistant coach getting gigs is indicative of how his peers feel about his program, that's all.

In his first interview, Smith talked about getting Kenny going and Mason's name was never mentioned one time. Obvious that they are going to give him the ball next year. You don't toss aside a 1st round pick that did what he was told to do (don't turn the ball over) as quickly as many of you would like. Kenny can get it done if there competence around him.

Kenny has proven if given 5 years in a college system he can get something done

AFC north ain’t college defenses

Love the unwavering support for such a mid dude tho, by getting it done we’re talking 9-8 right??? If everything around him is ABSOLUTELY perfect

Dude lacks what it takes to be a SB contending QB imo and has shown that nearly every time he’s stepped on a field vs a legit D

Smith was quickly signed as Tomlin, for the first time ever , interviewed a real OC and was so flabbergasted by knowledge that he couldn't let him take the next plane.

I guess and hope that shows the difference between Canada and Smith

yeah because his overall win/loss record is on pace with 9-8, right? Wrong.

He was told not to turn it over and he did that. He showed he can do just fine the very next game after Canada was gone. He'll do well if they build around him. Not gonna waste time as you aren't gonna channge my mind and I have no desire to change yours.

I cannot speculate who turned them down. I am saying Arthur Smith is Tomlin's guy. He owns him. Anyone think Mike Vrabel is a ****** coach. I do not. But you are responsible for your hires. This one needs to work out. They should have been replacing Tomlin himself. Another botched OC hire should end him.
Vrabel is a Bellichik baby. I think he subsequently sucks.
