Steelers hiring McCarthy

No, it wasn't a great move. I would've 1000% went in a different direction. However, was it better than Weaver (their only other candidate to get a 2nd interview), Flores, Hafley, or Evero? Yes.

I still can't believe the Steelers only other candidate to get a 2nd interview was Weaver. Awful process.
Their interview process gets an F.

I guess I won’t ***** too much, yet. I will wait and see if A. It is true, B. What the coordinator hires are. The coordinators could change my opinion for the better or worse.
I am in the same boat.... his DC and OC will be the deciding factor.

Sorry, I don’t count one playoff win in recent times “success.” I don’t care about regular season records; had enough of those trophies over the past 10+ years. He’s a Tomlin clone who is well past his prime, he only has a few years left, and we’ve now ceded much better options to other clubs even within the division who have the potential to be FIXTURES for many years to come.

Do you honestly look at the entire set of available options and think McCarthy was the BEST strategic option of the lot? If so, maybe I should call you “Art III.”
I see you've read none of my posts during the interview process.

I just dont understand the direction of our Steelers. Perfect opportunity to pick up a young coach. Call it retool, rebuild re......whatever. The team needs more then the status quo. I will again hope for the best. But Im tired of hoping for the best. I want the goddamn team to go in the direction I want it to go. This is a move to stay in the 15- 22 draft pick. That's it. The Deuce must have been heavily involved in the 2000-2010 teams. Dan was already pretty old. WTF is he thinking here.

No he doesn’t like the hire he thinks it just could have been worse.

For me this was close to my worse scenario-knowing Rooney hangs onto mediocrity.

Welp....Poetic Justice for you clowns that kept referring to Tomlin as a DEI hire and showed 100% disrespect at his leaving. I dont believe in karma, but I do believe you reap what you sow.

Please. He needed to go about 10 years ago, unless you enjoy mediocrity and getting your head caved in during the playoffs. I never gave two ***** about anything other than him building a champion.

And you think that will do what for the team?

Mark it down this team will hover around the same bullshit while that man is here.

Opportunity cost. It is worse. At least with someone who is awful it’s apparent to everyone and they must be fired after 2 or 3 seasons of 5-12 or worse. This guy is likely to give us more of the same of the Tomlin era with no playoff payoff until HE decides to retire. Meanwhile, we lose out on our choice of truly promising young candidates.

Horrible, horrible decision. The worst.

Without knowing how the initial interviews went for the others I can’t judge that part. Maybe they were poor in the interview.

Which, if any, staff members should McCarthy keep? I bolded who I'd consider.

OC - Arthur Smith
QB - Tom Arth
RB - Eddie Faulkner
WR - Zach Azzanni
TE - Alfredo Roberts
OL - Pat Meyer
Assistant OL - Isaac Williams
Offensive Assistant - Matt Baker, Mateo Kambui

DC - Teryl Austin
DL - Karl Dunbar
OLB - Denzel Martin

ILB - Scott McCurley
DB - Gerald Alexander
Assistant DB - Anthony Midget
Def QC - Jason Brooks
QC - Luke Smith

S&C - I clean house in this area.

Only way I’m happy with this is if we bring in a guy like Scheelhause as OC to eventually take over.

Yes, sleepy potato needs to go.

This kind of move doesn't surprise me though if it happens. McCarthy has had success as an Xs and Os guy. In both Green Bay and Dallas. Player acquisition and drafting was handled 99% by their respective front offices.

If it happens this is an indictment of Tomlin and his player personnel acquisition practices that we are all well versed in...Rooney has seen enough and they will bring in someone to assist Khan and let McCarthy handle strategy and coaching hires. Don't be surprised if the GOAT reunites with his old coach as well.

When Cowher was still coach Rooney said something like " We dont rebuild, we reload." I guess they are going to die on that hill. This thing needs an almost complete teardown and rebuild.
This...probably no way a new young HC could pick his own coaches, but Mike should get to do so.

See with a new mind I can deal with mediocrity while they are figuring it out. But knowing a retreads ceiling is playoff mediocrity.. it is a hard pill to swallow .

Yawnnnn.....Tomlin is yesterday news.

If you never referred to Tomlin as a DEI hire or totally disrespected him at his leaving then my comment doesnt apply to you, but if you did dont act like this isnt worst case scenario and a middle finger moment.

They needed to hit the reset button and only interviewed 3 offensive candidates, one of which was 62 years old. They didn't bring back two candidates coaching under the top coach (and one of the best organizations) in the league. 80% of the interviews weren't serious candidates.

I don’t think this necessarily means Aaron is coming back. I do like him with Howard and bringing Howard along. If he’s allowed to build his own staff I’m good with that. He has hired some very good coordinators and support staff. I’m hoping he brings an offensive coordinator to groom like he did with Matt Lefluer and Brian Schottenheimer at least he has some sort of a coaching tree.

I’m wondering if he brings Dom Capers back home to Pittsburgh

The WR coach should be shipped out. I dunno that playoff loss still stings not sure who I would keep probably the RB coach..
