Heading into the 2022 NFL free agency period and draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers do not have time to waste in assembling next seasons squad.
After re-signing pass-rusher TJ Watt and drafting young stars like Najee Harris, the Steelers are in win-now mode. There is far too much talent on the squad to waste away with mediocre seasons and plenty of cap to make things happen. Owner Art Rooney II and head coach Mike Tomlin both know how good their team’s roster is, but whether or not the front office will spend the money to make things happen remains the question.
With a few draft picks and free-agent signings this off-season, the Steelers defense could quickly become a top-10 unit in the league. The team faces a similar issue on offense, with holes in the offensive line and at quarterback. With a handful of “big swings” to fill their roster, Pittsburgh will be a competitor in the AFC for seasons to come.
The Steelers have many options heading into free agency, though they do not seem to be using any of them outside of signing Mitch Trubisky on Monday afternoon. One move that the organization needs to make is protecting its newly-signed quarterback. After the 2021-22 season came to an end, it was clear that the Steelers’ offensive line may be the worst unit in the NFL. After singing the former No. 2 overall pick, 24-year-old Mitch Trubisky, the Steelers cannot afford to have another poor season in the trenches.
The Steelers need to take a big swing at linebacker, such as possibly trading for a veteran such as Bobby Wagner or filling their defensive holes with draft picks in the coming draft. Restructuring the offensive line will also need to be a top priority after bringing in a new quarterback — protecting star players like Najee Harris will be vital to the Steelers’ success.
Do you think the Steelers will make any big moves to better the team this off-season? Let us know in the comments below!
