Steelers moving to Mexico?

  • Thread starter Thread starter POP
  • Start date Start date
Trust me, the game is Mexico WOULD be a home game. That country loves us, and has a radio station that plays our games and is devoted to the Steelers. I'm all for it.

Steelers will still get revenue from this game, and the spike in Steeler sales in Mexico will more than make up for the ticket sales lost.

If it's a bargaining chip to get a SB, it's a good chip to play, especially since we know the "neutral" site will be 80% Los Steelers!!

IDK, Cope.

Yes, 80% of fans would be Steeler fans, but they are not veteran football fans, so would they even realize when your team is on D to get loud, but when on O to shut up? Will those fans even know such things?

Is not rocket science you know, I'm on a further down south country and I know how to cheer on a game, there's this thing called satellite tv that let us watch games.

Also it seems like you haven't watched a soccer game with passionate audiences, it will get loud

You say that, and I'm a season ticket holder. I wouldn't be surprised if the game in Mexico with 80% is louder than a game in Pit with our 90-95%.

If you've seen or heard latinos at a soccer event in this country, you learn how loud a stadium can actually get.

Hi everyone, I'm from Mexico City, a die hard Steelers fan since the early 80's and visitor of this site since 2005 I guess. Just want to share a few points.

- I would be really happy if there's a game down here. I understand why many of you may not want to and I also hope it isn't a home game. But with that said, I think it would be great for so many people that love football, really love the Steelers but would never have the chance to go to a game. Like many of you know there's a huge fan base and must of it not just a casual fan. Living in a poor country, not every one has the resources to make such a trip.

- To answer POP's question, yes, everyone here understands football. It's been played here at a college level from almost a century. It's just not as popular as soccer. Even the non football fans gather for the Superbowl and understand the basics. I remember the preseason game against the Colts in 2000 I guess, in Aztec Stadium, when there was a delay of game because of the stadium was so loud supporting the defense. I can't remember for sure but I think Manning was the qb.

- The problems I see are the altitude and the pollution. Hopefully is a november game like this year's when is less harmful. The city is as safe as any larger city in the world can be. There are some places you don't go but for the rest is relatively safe. It's like the country, there are places that look like war zones, but you have to stay clear.

-If there is a game and some of you may plan to come please do. I guarantee you will have a great time. Hopefully I still be around here so you can have a local steelers fan tour guy. Mi casa es su casa. I had the chance to go to a number of games but mi first trip to Heinz Field is the one I'll never forget, well except for the game, lol We lost to the cheats in 2011? But I met a lot of people at the tailgate and literally had the time of my life, so I'm grateful for that.

The STEELERS have played in Mexico City before, can't remember the year and I do believe it was a preseason game. The fans at that time knew what to do.

Salute the nation

I know it will get loud, but my concern is it will be loud "all the time" even when we got the ball. Giving him 1/8th of a home field advantage is a big deal. Had we had one less home game last season, we would have possibly not made the playoffs.

Steelaztec,

Thank you so much for the information. I loved the insight you provided.

If I make the trip, I will surely look you up. Having a bro to show me around would be awesome.

Why do you think there are so many Steeler fans in Mexico City? Isn't there a lot of Dallas fans there as well (which makes more sense, considering Dallas is much close to Mexico than Pgh is)?

Thanks again for your comments. They are much appreciated.

Ho hum...we are getting extremely desperate if this is the **** we are talking about. Pittsburgh Steelers to Mexico City Steelers? Hmmmm. Isn't Arizona already kind of like that? The southwest Steelers.

However, a game in the Aztec city would be a cool venue and much less of a tax on their bodies with regardsome to travel.

as I said, not only in the US you can follow and understand football, steelaztec gave more info about it.

Well let's be a little more fair. How many times do you hear announcers, while covering a game in the USA, say, "These are knowledgeable football fans here. They know when to get loud and when to get quiet?" The point is that not even all fans IN the US know when to get loud and when to get quiet.

maybe I'm assuming that everyone is addicted to their team like I am

Steeler fans generally are. We are the extreme (as NFL fans go). A lot of other fan bases are not nearly as focused and passionate. For instance, Jag fan thinks they are rowdy and passionate, but they are like 20% as into it as Pgh fan is.

Bullshit. I have to start the Shhhhhhhhh calls when were' on offense and running hurry up in Pittsburgh. Our home crowd is not the best at it.

Always love to see Steelers fans from Mexico make the trip to Heinz Field. They always look like they have a blast and are 100 percent behind the team and there there to watch. I do hope you guys get to see a game down there, just not at the expense of one of our eight home games. If it was like baseball or hockey, no big deal, but with only eight games to look forward to every year, losing one (in what likely would be a pretty good matchup) hurts and would be a complete sellout by Rooney for his loyal season-ticket holder base.

And with that said about season-ticket holders, not as many go as they used to and with so many "first timers" going to games, a lot don't know when to cheer. Instead, they're there to get drunk and take selfies. Heck, during one preseason game a bunch of people started a "let's go Steelers" chant. SMH.

115,000 plus people $$$ top ten largest stadium in the world.

Well, there you go; if you have to "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" fans in Pgh, what are the chances Mexican fans will be more disciplined at it?

You mean, they thought they were doing the "Here we go Steelers" song and got it wrong? That is a horrid, horrid testament.

By the way, did you ever see the movie "Draft Day?" At the end of the movie, they had Browns fans chanting "Here we go Brownies, here we go."

Do Browns fans chant that, or was that just a terrible lie created by whoever did that movie?

OMG, what a rip off.

Thanks for the words POP,

Since the eighties until now we can watch the NFL games in open tv. Back then, one of the major networks boadcasted the AFC and the other one the NFC games. Obviously both the cowboys and the STEELERS for their success in the seventies, where the most transmited. That is why they have the major fan bases, because their games were there almost every sunday. And that is why, for mexican fans, the cowboys are the most hated team and viceversa. But there are other teams that have huege fan bases like the raiders, broncos, chargers, and no kidding, the dolphins.

As to why are we so passionate about a team that it's not even in our country, I have no idea. Mi father was a baseball fan and my friends at school were into soccer. More so because we host the World Cup in '86. But I was just captivated by football and the STEELERS, and I guess that happened to a lot of people. While my friends played to be Maradona I wanted to be Walter Abercrombie. I have never heard about a Dallas Cowboys fan club that get together to watch the games in bars, but there are some in Mexico City and in other cities like Monterrey, that on sundays, you would think you're at a STEELERS bar anywhere. Something great that is happening , is that now that generation have kids, and you can see the new generation of STEELERS fans, whose fathers grew up loving them. Like my 12 year old kis who is now a fan.

In the late nineties thanks to internet there was an exponential growth of NFL knowledge. For example I remember when I learned that my favorite player Greg Lloyd, wasn't on the team. It was until the first game of the season that I didn't see him. Now thanks to sites like this one I know about the salary cap, free agency, I watch the draft, etc. And that makes you feel closer to the team.

A couple things I think. It's possible that Rooney is eyeing this as getting some pull to host the SB if he goes along. It's also possible that he's simply looking ahead and figuring that eventually every team will have to give up a home game once in while and play in London, Mexico City, Tehran, wherever, at the behest of the NFL anyway so he might as well get it out of the way and get some cred. I can see this happening. Until now the teams giving up a home game to play in a foreign country were the ones who didn't sell out regularly but I can see The Rogmeister deciding that everyone has to do it and take their turn.

If they ever play in Rome, La Botticella will be rocking. Maybe Giovanni has some pull to get a soccer stadium.
