Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

I hate how the board makes me read every single post in every single thread with no ability to not read a poster's topics/post.

That really chaps my hide.

TMC and I are very similar. When we fought it was cats and dogs because we are both stubborn as **** on things. But I respected his knowledge of the sport and his understanding to really critique a Steelers decision you better understand the rest of the league, the salary cap, cash flow and talent. TMC was one of the few on the board that had good IQ on all those subjects.

But that level of intellectual investment wears on you. He puts in hundreds of hours on football a year. Thinking about it. Watching it. Writing about it. Collecting his thoughts. Not just the draft, but I'm sure a high degree of NFL knowledge as well. It's what I do because I just LIKE football at the NFL level on many, many levels.

Sometimes you need to shut it down. I'm close. I'm tired of putting in the time to understand football only to see the Steelers do the exact opposite of what my research proves is correct. It's extremely frustrating on so many levels.

As to other people pushing him out the door? I don't think that's it. I think he needed a break. Get back to being a fan again. Enjoying just watching the games. And the Archer thread just gave him an excuse.

I suspect he'll be back. Maybe middle of the season. When it's easier just to watch and comment on games.

The off-season is always the part of football that really offers more disagreement and opinions than any other. It's really where the foundation of every season is made or broken and there's a LOT of divisiveness that goes into that.

Just wow...that's all

I love football. I get a little obsessive over it. I don't miss Steeler games, I don't walk away from the tv when they are down by 20 points, or turn the channel, I watch all the Sunday games, usually the Monday night game, and when I remember there is a Thursday night game I watch that too. (My brain is still adjusting to that). I love the Steelers, always will, and I'll watch football no matter what Roger does to the NFL, they are still my team. I don't, as of now, watch college football, but in a few years that is most likely going to change, our daughter will be in college, and as such I'll have a little more time to turn on the tv and watch on a Saturday. I plan to enjoy it, just as I do the NFL, but if I find myself getting involved to the level of honestly getting pissed, and going on and on for several years because a guy was picked one round before I thought he should have been, I'll stop watching College ball. Period. I doubt that's going to happen, because I have no illusions about being a fan, and what that means.

Some people go to a movie, waiting to pounce on anything that's wrong with it, or what could have been done differently, or what they would have done, etc. You've all talked to people like that. I go to a movie expecting to be entertained, sometimes I am, sometimes I'm not. I don't spend the next 3 months going on and on about how the director should have done this, or should not have done that, or could have had this actor, or that one. It's done, he's the director, I get to say "Yes, I liked that movie" or "No, I didn't". I could go on an internet form and go on and on about it, but that doesn't make me a director, and it won't change the movie in any way. I am not the director.

I am also not the guy deciding to who Steelers draft. No matter how many articles I read, I'm not that guy, no matter how many times I think I'm right, I still won't be that guy. Once the pick is in, the pick is in, and I can decide to hope he does well, even if I'm not sure he will, or I can say how much I hate the pick, and give 10,000 reasons why. I guess I just don't get the latter, because honestly, and we should ALL know this by now, there is just no real reliable way to know if a guy is going to make the leap, and how well he'll adjust, to the pro game. It's a crap shoot, and really, trying to decide if a guy is going to be good or not before his rookie year is up, hell, it's happening here BEFORE HE'S taken a PRE SEASON HANDOFF. I mean, that's ballsy. Well, it would be ballsy, if people would come out and say it, but all too often it's shrouded in "I hope I'm wrong, but I think there is a 99.9999% chance this guy is gonna suck ***" that way they have that "I hope I'm wrong" so they sound like they are actually hoping he does well, as well as the double security blanket of, the tiny sliver of a chance he actually does well, they fall back and say "I never said for sure he was going to fail, I just said chances of him failing were really really ******* high".

And it's the same every year, someone, some round, is that guy, and if the thread is long enough, and the "We shouldn't have taken him there" and the "He's going to fail" crowd are passionate enough, no matter what he does, there will be those saying "Well, yeah, he's doing OK now, but what about this guy, or this one, or this one we could have had, and look how he is doing.

It's the neverending debate, all because someone read some articles, fell in love, or out of love, with some college player, and decided it was just the wrong pick by the Steelers.

You're not the director for the movie, you're not the GM for the Steelers, you're a fan. No one forces you to post, read, discuss, or anything else. You do not collect a paycheck for your amazing skills as a pre draft guru. No one requires you to watch the draft, nor to like it. So, in short, feel free to come here and educate us all on how ****** a pick is, with all the reasons you like, but remember, no one is forcing you to. If you decide the incompetence of the 6 time winning Pittsburgh Steelers is just too much for you to continue to deal with, I fully support your right to **** off, and head on over to some other team's BB who does a better job. Don't let the message board door hit ya in the *** on the way out.

Joe

you people with your pompoms and black and gold sunglasses are pissing off the real fans like 'teque.

These guys take themselves way to serious. What ever happen to just being a fan. He'll none of us work for a NFL team as far as I know. And if any of us were good enough to be doing it we would be.

This has been my point as well. These guys put a lot of effort and thought into it at a hobby level, and perhaps a little obsessive in their details at times. But to then to take a stance that they know better than the professional staff at Steelers HQ is just laughable. Do the Steelers get things wrong at times? obsolutely, as do all teams. But to think that someone with "The Inner-net" watching youtube highlights and reading bloggers and tweets and all other media that we all have access too knows more than the people whose job it is to watch official game films, fly out to games, interview candidates and their past coaches and mentors, scour test results and medical data that are not released to the public and put them through specific workouts to better understand their weaknesses and strengths.

"But...but...da stillers are stoopid for drafting Archer in da third roun'....we dont need no midget an no midget ever done nutth'n in da NFL!"

From some of the choices that have been made some of the guys may know who would be better than the steeler staff, they just have not gotten the chance to do it for the team or any other for that matter. Just because someone has not done something before does not mean they could not be good at. We have had drafts that did not have one player remain on the team and we are not sitting here with a team loaded with established talent that draft picks just could not beat. After all most of us are probably not in the health care business so how could we possibly know what would be better for us than obama care, after all they have folks getting paid to determine what is best for us.

The whole paid to do something vs someones passion about something does not hold up in every case. A real life example is the personal computer. IBM came up with it and had an operating system that did not work well. A couple of high school kids got to fooling with it and went on to become giants in the industry, when they started they were just a couple of guys.

I guess while we are discussing the drafts with no one still on the roster, do we bring up the two Super Bowl trips during that time? That is a pretty good success rate and not an "operating system that does not work"

Oh, I know "IT WAS COWHER'S PLAYERS!!!!".

It's funny you'll say that the posters here "might be good at something they haven't done before" yet every single post here that says Archer "might be good at returning punts" even though he hasn't done it before is riddled with sarcastic retorts. Talk about irony, someone who is claiming they could have drafted a better player, even though the never have drafted a player, going off on a draft pick because the team thinks he might have a skill set that no one has seen before in said player.

Sometimes ya can't make this stuff up.

Joe

I think my team in Premier League is going to be "West Ham United". Their nickname is the "Irons" or "Hammers" which is close to the "Steelers". They've had very bad ownership, but have a lot of money and a good stadium in North London. They could turn it around if they start getting managed better (right up my alley).

We'll see. Their season starts in August.
Always picking the underdog I see. I suggest Arsenal (AKA "Gunners") then...

Sorry, didn't realize your mouse was broken. He's leaving because he feels this is no longer a place for actual football discussion.

I say he's pretty much right
See above...

Well, about half the board already has. It's become just about the most pussified corner of the internet I've ever seen.
What does that make the other half? Are you a Contributor???

Thank you, Joe. Just plain ol' "thank you".

No wonder. Whenever anyone dares to post something football related that doesn't involve whining or bitching, such as Mini Camp or OTA news, the same douche bags feel it's their sworn duty to respond with "Big ******* deal, give me some real news! This is rose colored crap! Blah Blah Blah!" I wouldn't post an article here in a million years that dealt with football news either. It brings out all the ******* crybabies up who never used to be here, or were at least less visible before. I agree totally. The football discussion here has gone to complete **** over the last 5 years.

You can if you like, still does not change the fact that no one they drafted is still on the roster in two of those years. I'm sure in the draft there were players that could have made the teams in question and been worth keeping. We did not draft them when chances were there. I am not a draft guy or follow college football guy I read what the guys on here post that do lots of research, I find it interesting. I also think one could be dismissing their abilities (the guys that do all the research and analysis because they are very interested in it). We have a few guys on here that really post some nice breakdowns on the players, I would not count those few guys out just because no one is paying them and dismiss their thoughts out of hand.

If you were going to use the paid for it so they must be good approach Maddoff must have been a hell of an investor.

No one dismisses there time and effort. But when someone post the Steelers haven't been doing what I think they should be doing so I don't think I will follow them anymore. That's some stupid ****. I have done a lot of reading on heart surgery and different issues because of my Mom. If you need heart surgery in the future let me do it for you. Just because I have never done it before doesn't mean I wont be good at it.lol

I didn't say I was dismissing them, at all. They do, definitely, do good work. But I don't believe ANY of them are as good as the Steelers. It isn't just because they don't get paid to do it, it is because the Steelers FO has a track record of winning. Two Super Bowls during these horrible times. Oh the howwa! I don't care if another draft pick is ever on the team after 4 years if the team can get to Super Bowls, and even win some.

A shitload of bad analysts get paid by the networks, so getting paid doesn't really mean anything. But, honestly, if these people were, truly, better than the Steelers, SOMEONE, would be paying them to do it.

yes and no. Perhaps when evaluating as a whole. But I would think those who have a knack for breaking down game tape could find a spot, and replace a weak link within the group of scouts.

But when they aren't interviewing, it is hard to say if either would land a spot or not. Maybe improbable but perhaps not impossible.

Some people in life have went a lot farther with less.............

The thing is if say TMC got a scouting gig with the Steelers........ Just hypothetical. He could then travel and interview prospects while turning a part time gig into a full time gig. So the amount of hours spent would increase.

Say like............ a college player becoming a professional it isn't just a part time gig anymore, so some who have the skills spend more time on their craft and then succeed.

The improbable in life isn't always the impossible.

Be amazed what one person can accomplish if they don't limit themselves.

Do you think putting "hi" at the end of your posts make them snarky and cute? Because it makes you look like a toolbag

no worries.

I tend to want to be the different one in life, which does give off misinterpretations at times.

But I break down simplistic as you know me.

Diehard Steeler fanatic.
Little bit off, but friendly enough.
My stances seem to be somewhere in between what one wants and doesn't want.

hi

wonder how rod woodson feels about dri?

This thread still going? Obviously you guys have an agenda. When i figure it out there is going to be some trouble.

wonder how rod woodson feels about dri?

Clearly, Dri Archer is more accomplished than Ben Roethlisberger, and will be inducted into the HOF in a special session later this summer, after the first day of camp at St. Vincent.
