Steelers select LB Travis Feeney Washington

The conversation in this thread, is what I'm referring to. He's not prototypical of our outside lb's or our inside lb which is what I believe zumwalt is assumed to be. If its stupid to wonder at his purpose is, so be it.

Didnt this guy convert from Safety? this is the kind of guy who can add defensive play flexibility if he can play the LB position well... until then big fast special teamers are always needed

Exactly what I am wondering, that and if he can cover TE's.

He cannot rush the passer if the USC game is any indication. The only time he got near the QB on the pass rush was when a RB was assigned to block him. When an OT took him on, Feeney was disappeared. it looked like a little kid trying to get past his big brother on the pass rush.

Need a scheme to put this guy in space so he can use his speed to get to the quarterback. I know that tackles will eat him for lunch once they get their hands on him.

I like the play vs USC when he did a spin move when engaged with the tackle to separate and make a TFL on the running back.

Maybe they are going to go full Carnell Lake with this guy. Put him at safety?

I don't think that's their intention as they had Porter do the press conference, and being that he is the OLB coach with Porter himself saying that they view him as an OLB I find it hard to believe their intention is to make him a Safety.

He's got a frame to put on weight, and the overall instincts to play OLB in our system.

Again, we're only talking about 15 pounds and some edge bending technique here. He's got EVERYTHING else we'd want in a rush linebacker. Let the coaches and Harrison have some time with the kid.

let's move all our backup corners to S
Hines can come out of retirement and backup Ben
and move every backup TE to T
Pop will move from Patriots fan to Steelers fan

all these movements

Jeff Reed bring me some TP for my bunghole...

Well I hear ya. I just don't see very many "Projects" come to fruition. Hines was a success. So was Ike. Bother drafted by "others". I guess moving Timmons inside could be considered a project success.
IMO, he don't have the *** to hold the edge.

James Harrison wasn't a project?

What round was Antonio Brown picked in?

Brett Keisel?

Aaron Smith?

Come on man. Give our coaches some credit. They've made some very good starters out of some 3rd day picks.

Incredible athlete but 4 shoulder surgeries while in college. Freaky workout numbers, runs a 4,41 forty at 6' 4" tall

Sounds like a Shazier type player. Damn good size and range. Hope this guy can make the team and stay healthy

Sweet titties Parker, Hoge, Stallworth, Gay, Beachum etc etc etc

Steelers are known to be one of the better teams for picking late round and undrafted gems and having them produce...

I guess everyone is assuming Feeney will be an OLB. Is it just me or does anyone else think he might switch to ILB.

I'd guess it's just you since Porter has already stated he'll be an OLB in their system.

Feeney was a very tough scout. He played "edge" on Washington's 3-4 defense (which was often in 2-4-5 nickel). He's grossly undersized for the NFL game right now.

This is a big time project. You throw him out there on special teams and he's got to make a name for himself but when you play him in our base defense? The offense is going to eat him up and spit him out until he gets much, much bigger and stronger.

I didn't know about the shoulder injuries. That's a huge concern. Maybe that's why he's so freaking skinny (can't lift when your shoulders are healing), but you hope the doctors cleared him for big time weight lifting because that's what he needs.

Athlete is there. The reports are he's a pretty good kid. Team captain. Should be mature enough for move to the east coast.

I agree - if the kid adds 15lbs - he won't have the same speed as he does now. That's just the facts. More below...

Wait for it - it's coming....

And there you have it. I know Coach Porter is signing off on Feeney to be an OLB; but, methinks (and I know, I know, this ain't my paid job) that Feeney is Timmons heir-apparent. Just my gut feeling...

How about let him make our roster first?

I wish the kid the best, probably a ps player though unless he excels at STs. I think his niche will be coverage units and a shot as a nickel LB in the coverage role. I think his work will be cut out simply making the 53, reminds me of a poor man's Shazier a bit.

With his lack of size/strength and frequent shoulder injuries I don't think there's a shot he ever replaces Timmy, that will more likely be Williams or an early draft pick next year.

ya couple years on special teams would be sweet... size and speed he could be a special teams monster.
