Steelers select LB Travis Feeney Washington

his best assets are in coverage so in the future he might become a rover LB in the nickel, at least there's where he would have a better chance to earn playing time soon

Signed to 4 year deal.

He'll battle Chick for the #5 OLB spot. I tend to think he'll win. Yes, Chick knows the system, but Feeney is a far superior athlete. If he can show even modest competence setting the edge, and makes plays on special teams, expect him to make the 53.

Biggest plays he can make is to beat Shamarko down the field to block him from running into the PR and getting penalties.

I would love for someone to beat ot Sham not so wow. As I think Sham is limited to STs.

I believe you can always find a role for a true athlete, but it won't be a base OLB in this defense. That is way too skinny to take on a 300 plus pound tackle in this league. I could see sub packages where you have a certainly big by DB standards guy that can run/cover or be brought on blitzes though.

Yep. I saw a picture of No. 41 today and thought it was a rookie UDFA safety, but realized it was Feeney. I hope they find a way to use his athleticism, but definitely not big enough to hold the edge against the run.

Two things.

1) I am not above trying him at safety. He's got great cover skills, has played the position, and could negate the Gronks of the world.

2) To play OLB, we're talking about a dude who's 6-4/230 with broad shoulders who needs to put on 15 lbs of muscle. Not only can it be done, it has been done.

def needs to add some strength.....

Incredible athlete but 4 shoulder surgeries while in college. Freaky workout numbers, runs a 4,41 forty at 6' 4" tall

I like him on specials team. A former safety, he could also play nickel LB. Tomlin likes veritably and flexibility, sometimes giving a roster spot to a guy who's only good for special teams ( Ventrone ).

The question is can he stay healthy?

Feely to SS?

I never thought that Feely was drafted to be a SS.

But it is possibly the case.

At 220 lbs, he seems awfully small to play LB.

They say he can't stop the run.

But instead of trying to make him gain weight to play LB, maybe it was their intention to keep him at 220, or lighter, to play SS.

Anyone hear one way or the other?

Nobody can cover gronk!

To get technical, nobody can cover anybody in the NFL with these rules.

LaDanian Tomlinson famously said that there are no shutdown corners in today's game. And the stats bear that out. According to NFL Network's analysis, no CB currently has less than 50% completions against them.

So "cover" does not men shut down. It means negate as best you can. And in Gronk's case, it's doubly hard because NE owns the refs.

I already called it, hybrid LB/S

For 2016 yes. I think this year their hope is to get him on the field in some 4-2-5 with Shazier or maybe just be Shazier's backup so when he gets hurt we have a similar player ready to step in. I feel in 2017 this very well could be the replacement for Timmons. Timmons is a very good ILB but he's going on 30 and is coming off a monster contract. Is he willing to retire here making 3-4 million a season? I have watched an hour of just film on Feeney and I just don't see him being an 3-4 OLB. Just not going to happen. But you put him in the middle with Shazier and we have two ILB who can cover, blitz and quick enough to find the gaps and take the ball carrier down behind the line.

You guys are reading WAY too much into a 6th round pick.

Teams don't change what they are doing for 6th round pick talent. Those picks either learn what we are doing and make it on special teams or they get cut and the team moves on.

Freeney is not going to make this roster unless he's one of the best (if not the best) special teams coverage guy we have on the roster.

Otherwise, he's going to be red shirted on the practice squad to see if he can gain weight and fill out his frame.

Those are his only two possible outcomes from this camp/preseason.

Agree. We can hope he becomes something, but expecting it the first year doesn't make sense, unless we are super lucky. With his speed and athleticism, I do expect him to stick on ST, though.

According to Porter, he was not drafted as a safety and he is not concerned with him gaining weight. They want the speed on D and this kid has it. Our D is totally transforming to speed to counter the TE's that are now just big, fast WR's and the RB's coming out of the backfield.

Sharmarko is our new sweat suit model...hats too...

Why pick Ventrone for him to replace??? He should be able to do EVERYTHING that Sham "Artist" Thomas can do now...

Good point, Del

Agreed Del.

At least we're waiting for 6th and 7th rounders to fill hybrid spots as opposed to wasting high picks on a gimmick, or a seldom used position.

So no more Dri Archer's??? Shucks...

I know the above is a popular term, but just saying it doesn't really define what it is.

It's 3rd and 8. What D will be used and where does Feely line up? Who does he cover?

He'll line up on his couch and root for the defense to stop the play. Just like us. Hopefully he's covering his beverage of choice...

Bermuda, Cope:

I just want to see a pass rush. I'm willing to hear (or concoct) any conspiracy theory that ends with Jarvis on the bench and double digit sacks from the ROLB position.
