Steelers select Martavis Bryant in Round 4

After seeing his reel, I see that he will fight for the ball, make adjustments when the ball isn't thrown perfectly, and quite frankly I would be shocked if we don't all applaud this pick early in the season!

Lots of similarities to Limas Sweed. Very, very close on tape.

Let's just hope Tomlin and Haley don't break the kid in camp. I'm not sure he's a mentally tough as he needs to be. Sweed pretty much folded like a pair of twos and then got injured as well. Bryant has to have some good luck fall his way. Not get in Tomlin's doghouse. Not drop too many passes early. Gain some confidence. Earn the team's respect with hard work.

The first thing he should do is spend extra time hand catching. Doing the "brick" drill or something along those lines. Put in some extra work with Roethlisberger on the back shoulder catch (something Bryant really looked good at on film).

i agree , they need to show him limas sweed tape and say ..look this is what we don't want to see from you ..

"Steelers expect Martavis Bryant to start in 2014"

blurb just on NFL Network

"Steelers WR coach on Bryant - we feel like we got a guy to put opposite of Antonio Brown"

Yeah, they snatched that out of the first opening statement of Coach Mann. They followed up and this is what was said:

Is Martavis Bryant starter capable?
I think we will bring him in here and throw him in the mix with everybody else. We took him in the draft because we liked him. What I can say to you is that potentially he could be a starter. I’m not going to say that he is going to start, but potentially he could.

Does Markus Wheaton have the inside track as the starter going into the season?
Guys that have been here, we give them opportunities. He’s been here. He knows the offense. He’s got an inside edge, but the job is up for grabs. Everybody goes to work and in the end the coaches will make decisions. We put the best people on the field that afford us the best opportunity to win.

When you say that he has the potential to start, do you mean as a rookie?
Will have to see what we’ve got. I don’t think that it’s fair to him to say that he will start. You have to come in and work because we have other guys in the room. Potentially he will be a starter, you just never know. You play the best, that’s how you win.

If the guy is at least decent in training camp then Moye's time as a Steeler is coming to an end

I told everyone that before the draft.

Can't imagine Bryant starting this season (assuming health at the position) based on his relatively small number of starts at Clemson and what's been said about his difficulty picking up a college offense. Much better to bring him along slowly as we did in Mike Wallace's rookie season or how the Bengals used Chris Henry.

P.S. Moye = Baron Batch, a guy who is just not good enough but a small faction on this board believes he is going to be the best thing since sliced bread. Can Moye play special teams better than DHB? That's the only way he makes the team.

Moye, J. Brown, and anyone under them in the depth chart are already gone IMO. You have Brown, Wheaton, Moore, Bryant, DHB. If Archer makes the team, he'll be listed as RB/WR and I don't see them carrying any more guys. It would have to take an extremely good/borderline GREAT training camp from Moye to stay on the team. I just don't see it at all.

IMHO, Brown, Moore, Wheaton are locks. DHB, Bryant, Moye, and Justin Brown are fighting for two spots.

You kind of also had to consider what was in front of him at Clemson prior to this season. DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins were the starters. One was a top 5 pick and the other was a first rounder.

Never heard anything about issues picking up the playbook. I knew that about Benjamin, not about Bryant. I think his biggest issue will simply be catching the football.

I might be mixing players. I know Bryant had some academic issues (missed a bowl game because of them, right?) and failed to qualify initially. Did he score a 7 on the Wonderlic or was that Benjamin?

I agree with you guys, the 5th spot will be fought by DHB, moye and j brown. Speedy Gonzalez (dri archer) will probably get a rb spot

I don't know that I would say Wheaton is a lock. He's close but not quite a lock.

Benjamin with the seven. Bryant scored a 14. Not great, but he is not eating the chalk in the WR room. He did fail to qualify academically, but that was because he transferred from a charter school that was closing to TL Hanna (in SC). He finished his final two seasons at Hanna, was accepted to Clemson, and was ready to go. The NCAA reviewed his transcript and threw out a math class from the charter school, causing him to fall a half credit shy in math. That is why he failed to qualify. Not really grades, for all I know, he could have had an A in the class. I read somewhere that he was not showing up for study halls and mandatory study sessions at Clemson and that is why he was suspended. No academic issues and he was able to practice in the spring and play with the team on opening day. Hard to say. Dabo has stated it was missing study sessions. Called it a team decision another time. Called it academic another time. Hard to say with Dabo (I do not like the guy, so I do not trust him).

I do know he is not a guy that you see running a certain route and the ball is flying another way though. Does not miss many assignments and, to be honest, I could care less if they can give me the square root of 81 as long as they are where they need to be when Ben throws the ball. As a rookie, not like his route tree is going to consist of a full tree. If we throw screens to him, we are jackasses. If we throw shallow crossers, we are dumb. Should not run a ton of shorter routes. Keep him running go routes, posts, corners, deep crossers, outs, ins, and a few comebacks and we are in business. Teach him the one position, when he comes on the field, slide Wheaton or Brown inside and have them make sure he knows the damn route. Baby him early. Treat him like a dog with a frisbee. Show it to him, throw it, let him go get it.

You guys are funny. The only veteran fighting for a spot is DHB, and he has the inside track due to special teams.

Martavis Bryant press conference: 'I told my mom I wanted to be a Steeler'

"Pittsburgh is the place I wanted to come to,'' Bryant said. "I told my mom the whole time that I wanted to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. It's just a great city, and when I took my visit there I really enjoyed it. I had a great conversation with the receivers coach and liked him. So, it's a good place for me.

"The Steelers have had some great receivers over the years, and I know that Big Ben likes to throw the ball deep. So, I want to get in there and help him out and help them win. I need to come in and work on everything. I'm not satisfied. I never want to be satisfied.''

Moore sign a FA deal and I doubt his experience is just toss aside. Wheaton was a third round pick and I doubt they dump him after year two. Both would have to look lost out there to get cut. IMO
