Steelers Sign 2 Punters; Announce Other Moves

I certainly don't want to sound like a dick but that is crazy to me to think that.
I feel bad things like this happen. The Tuitt deal also. But who really does this?
If his dad just died, he would be off this weekend and next just to get him in the ground and deal with things. That is very realistic. That leaves the last game of the season and if one of these punters does OK today, they will probably just tell him to take that game off as well.

I think this scenerio would be best outcome for all involved. Two fold, Persey's mental (big factor)and team's capability becomes better.

Welcoe to our HOF coach's 101 escapade. It's like everything is a surprise.

I've always said PRO-action and not RE-action should be the norm for such a great coach.

I'm confused. It is truly sad that his father passed during this Holiday...I get it. Bereavement is standard fair and deservedly so, as is the sympathy and respect for the player for his loss...I get that too. What I don't get is the team reaction..or reactions, as is the case.

Why on God's green planet would the Steeler organization need to replace one mediocre player for a week or two of berievment with three other mediocre players at the end of another mediocre season...jus sayin. How is this explained, or they not even trying to ?

My thoughts are totally with the guy. There will always be another season, another game, another chance to kick another stupid football. But time with your dad doesn't last forever. I'd give anything under the sun to have mine walk back through the door one more time.

Good to see yaz SteelChip, been awhile.

I think they only replaced him with two players, punters. I may have miss-understood but that's how I see it.

Nothing surprises me with the missques.

You're right, I read it wrong and included JC being upgraded into the mix. Still seems funny to add 2 punters for temporary duty though. Boswell did some cursory punting duty in college so it's not like we had to rely on Ben to pooch kick or anything. The biggest concern was probably the holder for Bos.............. .I understand that Ben was the backup...lol

I'm still here bout every day DIC, just perusein' the political scene with some 'tunes' mostly. This ain't my Steelers of old and the NFL can fold tomorrow as far as I care. Unfortunately for me, I have been a Steeler junky for so long that I seem to get mild withdrawal symptoms If I don't see at least a game or two occasionally. It's really frustrating but there's little I can do about it .

More than likely this is my destiny ....

I hear yaz SteelChip, these are not our STEELERS of old, they have morfed into sometyhing I thought I'd never see in a steelers uniform........soft. Even the less than winning teams of the 80's were not soft, they had fight in them. Todays mix of meMEme / instagram / facebook / BRAND all go against what football is about but the true demise of football is gambling which lead to fantasy football, all demise contributing.

Add in the lackadazicalness of current coaching staff / scouting / ownership can all add to the poor product of a once storied franchise.

Can they regain the allure,..... hell yes but it will take BIG committment and change.

Well, Corliss Waitman already looks like a vast improvement over Harvin. And he fits the Rooney’s narrative.

How many punters?
If the guy does the job, does it really matter? Or, does it just get under your skin personally? Scratch that. It truly does sound like a personal issue.

Waitman will be on the team through the end of the season one way or the other. Since they signed him off another teams PS, they have to keep him on the roster for at least 3 weeks. I still think Harvin will at least get to compete again next year for the punting job.

What are the odds that the team that reached on a punter, who “happened” to be black, in the draft. Who was beat out in camp. Who continued to be a disappointment all season. Is replaced by the only other black punter out there. I mean maybe it’s a coincidence. But I don’t think so.

In fact I’m so certain that Art the deuce is such a beta that unless Rudolph crushes it he’ll be replaced by only a black quarterback. I think Deuce probably sits at home jerking it to cuckhold porn and crying about his tiny dick.

I like most of your takes but you really have to get off the race thing. It is very unbecoming.

That’s what the NFL is now. I didn’t open Pandora’s box but here we are. If Tomlin was white he’d at the very least be talked about in the media being on the hot seat. I mean Cowher went through coordinators because they got head coaching jobs. Tomlin gets them fired and they go off and win Super Bowls. But again, we aren’t supposed to talk about his ineptness because racism. We are supposed to pretend Harvin didn’t clearly get beat out in camp by Berry who is having a better season than Harvin in Minnesota.

Maybe I’m looking too far into things but there’s reasons why. It’s not like it’s undeserved.

Harvin was kept because of potential and statistically not being far off of Berry's stats/preseason performance. They like his leg strength. We know Steelers hold onto coaches. You have one that hasn't had a losing record. Now do I want more from a HC **** yeah. But white or black - Rooney's aren't jumping off a coach that season to season brings more wins than losses. Financially they are comfy. The Rooney rule I think have a few twisted on the impact long term. Initially it gets you interviewed. Nothing about skin color keeps a HC in a job.

to be fair, you could also explain Harvin by any of the following
a.) they were trying to replace berry for a couple seasons before this
b.) they were trying to justify using a pick on the punter position so he was making it unless he absolutely sucked in the preseason
c.) this is a rebuilding year on the downlow so keeping younger players in regardless of performance was always the plan

Yep I want to say plenty of bad decisions from Rooney on down to Tombert. But race for me doesn't factor in. And I have no problem saying it when it does in any scenario.

Ok, they drafted him because of potential. But do you think we drafted him a little high? He wasn’t ranked #1 on any board I saw and even if he was on ours, how many other punters were drafted? And yes I agree Berry didn’t blow Harvin out of the water, but he was better and a vet. I personally believe they kept Harvin to protect their decision to use a draft pick on him. I feel they doubled down on their mistake to draft him by keeping him over Berry. I think if they drafted Harvin in the 7th or signed him as an UDFA he probably sits on our practice squad this year. And that would have probably been a better place for him. (And I feel if Harvin was white they’d much more likely have kept Berry)
Ok, fine they keep him after his 15th .500 or better season. Ben retires. 2022 and 2023 are sub .500 years. Do you feel we should fire some more coordinators or would you then say it’s time to look at the man in charge? I’m honestly curious what it would take.
Maybe the Rooney rule for most teams doesn’t hold you to a different expectation but when your last name is Rooney I feel it does. I honestly feel if they fire Tomlin they will only hire a black coach. Maybe even a black female coach. The qualifications aren’t about football with them anymore.

What in the name of Ol' Jim Crow? Man, put down the race card. Not everything in life is about race. And not every successful minority is successful because they were handed this or that. Same way not every successful white person is a success because they got a "small loan of a million dollars" from daddy.
One gets the feeling that if they did replace Tomlin with a qualified minority coach, say a Bienemy or possibly Leftwich, you'd be beating the drum to fire them immediately, or calling it a token hire. Lord forbid they draft a black QB. They'd hear your teeth gnashing and see the steam coming out of your ears 500 miles away. But again, that's a personal issue. I'm for replacing Tomlin with the best available candidate (if they replace him) and for eventually drafting the best possible replacement for #7. Black, White, Purple, Blue ... don't give a ****. Just get the best.
*And I sincerely doubt that the race of the punter actually matters.

If you look at how Tomlin has done over the last decade and if you think about "what have you done for me lately", he should be gone. He's been here for 15 years. Stability at the position is not a concern or issue at this point. They can move on without batting an eye in that regard. They should move on because of his ability to win, win in the playoffs and win a championship. He has won games but he hasn't won in the playoffs to even think about winning a championship and that is what's most important to a sports franchise - especially one with the legacy of the Steelers. Something other than stability and his ability is keeping him as coach. People can infer what they want. If Ben is retiring, just clean house and get rid of the entire coaching staff and start over. I think Colbert would actually stay on to take on that challenge.

YOU are absolutely correct in getting the BEST available. Color is NOT the factor, respective ability for their position of hire is.
