Steelers site has part one of behind the draft up

Just another point that might be worth some discussion, had we accepted the third round pick for sanders last year who would you have liked to have seen us take with the pick.

We would have taken Bryant.

Question should be who would we have selected in the 4th?

The comp for RFAs come in the same year as the deal with the new team, so the R3 for Sanders woulda been in last year's draft.

Is it possible then we would not have needed to trade this years third rounder to do what we did last year in the draft? that would have still left us a third rounder this year. and a comp pick as well.

That's true. Had the Steelers not matched the Pats, they woulda had the Pats R3 pick last year, and wouldn't have used this year's R3 pick in trade to get Shamarko. So, yeah, looking at it that way, last year's draft may have played out exactly the same, and they woulda retained their own R3 pick this year.

Yeah, when I rewatched it I caught the 80. Though I like the idea that the Steelers look for 101 percent from their players!

I rewound that part 3 times and still couldn't make out what that guy said.

Yeah, it was 1st, 4th and 7th, which was lowball. I think Dick L. was pretty set on Shazier if he fell to them, just the feeling I got, we'll see how he does, he's currently with first team in OTA, so that's encouraging. At least we aren't telling him he's a backup, and trashing him in the media like the Clowns are doing with Johnny Football! :)

Wasn't exactly linear in that summary, so here's a breakout:

1. OLB
2. WR
3. OT
4. OLB2
5. OT2
6. WR2
7. TE, Ebron
8. OT3
9. ILB, Shazier
10. CB Gilbert or Fuller, can't be Dennard
11. NT/DT Donald
12. DE Tuitt
13. WR3
14. QB
15. WR4
16. CB2
17. QB2
18. CB3
19. ILB2

Then it looks like:
20. ILB3
21. WR5
22. OT4
23. Safety
24. OT5 redflagged
25. TE2 redflagged

If this is really how the board went and I am not going to check for myself because I am sure this took a long time(so nice work) so I will take your word.

1. OLB- Mack or Clowney? I know you'd just assume it is Clowney but that would mean Barr was not even in their top 25. From the film I watched I do not like Clowney and according to Colbert 80-90% of their board is film. Because of that fact I put Mack ahead of Clowney. Maybe Clowney was just biding time for the draft knowing he had done enough to be a top five pick and didn't want to get hurt but still do you want a guy who takes a year off on your team. What happens after he signs his contract? Takes 3 years off then blows up year 4 for his contract year. idk just a thought.
2. WR- My assumption is Watkins. I was not this high on Watkins though had him in my top 10.
3. OT- I assume Robinson then Mattews at 5 but could be Lewan at 5.
4. OLB2- Mack but it would be interesting to see what they didn't like about either Clowney or Barr. Barr is more speed and finese so I did not have him this high.5.
OT2- Matthews or Lewan.
6. WR2- Evans and I had him right about here.
7. TE, Ebron- Way WAY higher on Ebron than I. I do not like how he drops passes and his lack of blocking ability made him a mid to late first in my book. Weak TE class maybe pushed him up.
8. OT3- Lewan or Matthews. I figured 3 OT's in the top ten also.
9. ILB, Shazier- This is why they took Shazier. Top 9 talent at #15 and at a need position.
10. CB Gilbert or Fuller, can't be Dennard- Agreed. I would like to see who this was. I think they might have been on the phone with Fuller's people when he was drafted so that to me means they might have had Fuller higher than Gilbert. Otherwise they had Fuller and Dennard ranked about the same and Dennard was the backup plan with a trade down if Fuller and Shazier are both gone IMO.
11. NT/DT Donald- I am surprised they would have Donald this high. He is a great prospect but to be like Hood does not fit the system. Round peg and square hole... But did they have Easley or Hageman this high? Doubt it.
12. DE Tuitt- If they had Tuitt this high and got him in round two I bet they called to make sure they hadn't missed that he was arrested or something.
13. WR3- This must be Beckham. I pegged him as our guy before the draft with need/value and fitting the steelers system.
14. QB- Interesting they even had a QB on the board. I know in years past they took QB off all together because they had a franchise QB so maybe this is contract related...
15. WR4- Cooks or Benjamin? IMO this is Cooks. Short but other than that fits the system and is very productive.
16. CB2- Again they have Dennard and either Gilbert or Fuller right next to each other. Interesting...
17. QB2- Again a QB. I bet it was Bortles at 14 and Manziel here.
18. CB3- See above.
19. ILB2- Has to be Mosley.

20. ILB3- Now who the F is this? Shazier and Mosley are head and shoulders above the rest so they had their eye on someone we wouldn't expect.
21. WR5 Either Benjamin or Cooks. Would be curious to see which...
22. OT4- Again I wonder who this is. James? Bitonio?
23. Safety- Pryor probably.
24. OT5 redflagged- This has to be Kouandjio with his bum knee.
25. TE2 redflagged- This has to be Austin Seferian-Jenkins with his off the field issues.

Been doing this since 2010, when I first noticed steelers.com posting pictures every year from inside their warroom. Been dialing it in since. And last year they posted a collection of draft day photos from various drafts, with better shots of their board. I'm 100% certain of their positional board layout, as far as which column represents which position. I don't yet understand their grading system, nothing I've ever seen before, but I think I got the jist of it anyways. From that board they sort them onto their master board 1-255 and beyond into UDFA. Tho their positional board usually has around 140-150 prospects they say are draftable, they fill out that masterboard all the way thru, and remove the players from both boards as they are picked. Never really get a good look at that masterboard, but that positional board is good enough. For the most part. Just don't know how they settle ties when they have 4 or 5 guys across different positions with the same grade. Assume by need and fewest risks.

I'm not sure Mosely is ILB2 on their board. ILB3 is redflagged. Can't tell if that's for med or character. Med will have a red '+', and character a red 'O'. But he's the only one that high that I'd think could be flagged, so he's either ILB3 or not on their board.

Turns out Fuller is CB5. That makes Gilbert CB1 on their board. When the Steelers are talking trade with some team prior to Fuller being picked, the CB5 card is still on their board, and Gilbert had already been picked. But when the Steelers are on the clock, that CB5 card is gone, so that makes it Fuller.

Remotely possible Tuitt is DE2 and not their top DE. But for that to be true, pretty much their top 30-35 would have to be completely gutted for Tuitt to be the highest remaining player on their board AND DE2. That would include their top 2 RBs, and none had been picked at that point. Their 2nd highest TE was redflagged. Again, can't tell, but has to be either AS-J or Niklas. AS-J had been picked prior to Tuitt, but Niklas was still on the board. I dunno. It's possible, but I doubt it. Fairly certain Tuitt is their top DE.

Bortles was their 2nd highest QB. That card is gone when the Steelers pick and their top QB remains. Only one QB was taken prior. That's a positive ID on Bortles for QB2 on their board.

Do you think Boreland is ILB3? Dudes film is ******* impressive but his workout numbers and height had to throw up red flags. I could see Spence having some of the same red flags would be interesting to see the board that year to compare.

Been following this thread with interest. Many props to D for sorting out the info.

And to answer the question (not my place to do so but) I think they only use red marks on the board for medical or character concerns.

There's red flags - and there's red flags.

Real nice coverage guys. It is likely very difficult for the team to keep how they rate players in comparison to other players a secret from other teams. How ever with all the coaching changes there very well may be some one with some experience at this in nearly every draft room in the nfl. If one was able to tell how the team did things in detail it would surely allow one an edge in the draft by seeing if any other teams were interested in the same players that you were.

The patriots likely snuck a camera into the other teams rooms and are looking at high res picks in real time. Probably have sound too.

Part 4 isn't much more than a fluff piece, but they do mention that they wanted Martavis Bryant earlier than where they got him.

I enjoyed watching all four parts. I was disappointed that there was no real 'behind the scenes' access. I was hoping to hear coaches lobby for different players, and some debate about players that we did/did not ultimately select. The production itself was well done, but really nothing more than a marketing puff piece.

Lots of things were not addressed, like the way ties were broken, how coaches interacted with each other for players, how they dealt with another team taking a player they were planning on selecting, what happens when a player falls and is available later than they thought he would be. Still a nice story even though a lot of it is still shrouded in mystery.

Exactly! Those are the kinds of things that truly would have made it 'behind the scenes'. It was good to watch, but it was far from my expectation of it being anywhere close to Hard Knocks type candor.

#4 was just a total fluff job. I didn't learn anything from that. I was hoping for a lot more inside info and draft day discussions.
