Steelers UDFAs Thread

I'm just checking here. You do understand that 4.4 and 4.48 are different? And that 4.48 is 2 100ths off of 4.5 which is what I said was the cut-off at Combine.
Do you understand elite cannot be on the same tenth of a second as average, that would be impossible when there are a dozen rookies who run sub 4.4, probably every year at that. not including the current players in the league. If 4.40 is elite then what would you describe as average? and how would you explain a bunch of 4.2 guys clocked??

Right now. I want you to find and provide this bunch of 4.2 clocked times. Perhaps m source was incorrect. But it had pictures of the 10 guys who were clocked sub 4.3. Dri Archer was one. Chris Johnson was 2nd and I did not recognize anyone else. Now I'm certain some have been clocked at pro days or hand timed sub 4.3. I'm talking the quality control of the Combine.

So many Tyreek Hill didn't even make the list

31 players ran sub 4.4 in last years combine alone
But 4.4 is elite speed???

Anyone who believes 4.4 to be elite nfl speed is a clown

numbers are the numbers

Tyreek Hill ran 4.29 at his pro day. He was ineligible for combine due to charges. The best part of you is you make my point for me. Look at the years on your list. Hiw does that translate to a "bunch" of current players

Yes someone who is nearly a tenth faster than the average you provided is elite. Keep digging your hole.

But just on the short list shown, how many guys is that? 17. Only 2 are really noteworthy.

Maybe what makes between 4.3 and 4.5 elite speed is that more of those guys can actually translate it and be successful.

Your list is of the best all time. I'm not completely sure what you are saying in second part of this bit I might actually agree.

31 players in last years draft alone ran sub 4.4 is my point. if every team in the league has a sub 4.4 guy, or a handful. 4.4 isn't elite.

31

Micah Parsons 6-3 246 he ran a sub 4.4. Good for 8th all time for linebackers. Linebackers

Linebackers are not Levon Kirkland anymore. Taking into account just linebackers and safety on top of receivers and corners not even qs more than 120 players ran and for sure at least 1 ran sub 4.4. Richardson. So that is 31 out of more then 120 at the fastest positions.
At wr. 8 out of 49 ran sub 4.4. At corner 7 out of 29. But keep trying. I can do this all day.

What I'm trying to say is on that list he posted of sub 4.3 guys only 2 of the 17 seen there are players of any note. Champ Bailey and Chris Johnson. So maybe being sub 4.3 doesn't translate to a great NFL player very often. Maybe they are just fast guys. Maybe to be that fast they have certain body builds or muscle structure that can't handle the pounding of the NFL, for example. I don't know. It was just a thought.

It is kind of a theory of mine, and granted, it could be nothing. But it seems like lately there are teams every year that are just crippled by playoff time. I don't seem to remember that so much when I was young in the 70s. I wonder if these players are actually too finely tuned, it's partly leading to more injuries, and part of that would be too focused on speed.

Totally agree. Few super fast guys are great players.

PS

Diver has a very valid point, most of the time that “speed” doesn’t transfer to NFL with PAds on.

The Combine needs to trade in the 40 track meet sprint, to the 40 NFL in full pads sprint. That would be useful information.

The short & 3 cone is more valuable. MOST plays are less than 20 yards so that high spirt is more important than that top end speed. Broad jump too !

Salute the nation

We were talking WR and Runningbacks. A burner at that position cannot be slower than a fast Linebacker.
Put it this way none of the speed guys at WR or RB were 4.4 guys.
Even Mike wallace was 4.3, Tyreek hill, chris johnson, randy moss, TO, Willie parker, all those guys were speedsters, all sub 4.4
4.4 is nothing special if there are guys that run 4.2, and hundreds of guys that have went sub 4.4

I can agree with the super fast guys are rarely great football players. There are more injuries today because the players are much bigger faster and stronger than they use to be, Growth Hormone wasn't around then.

When you came up with your number 31 I believe it was all participants which included QB Richardson and an edge or even and off ball linebacker is capable of 4.4 speed. The fact remains 1/4 or less of Corners, wr's and rbs went sub 4.4 at the combine.

What has been happening over the past 20 years is that agents

It mostly that agents get these guys trainers who focus on just those events… tge NFL isn’t track and field… the 40 is just a straight line run with nothing else to think about or compensate for… no other players.. no route to run.. nobody to cover… no pads… just a free brainless run…

Even things like the shuttle or cones… its all fixed, basic testing that really doesn’t give a real idea of how fast a player will be on the field… because it’s absolutely scientifically proven that some guys play faster than their workout times and some get mired down in everything else and play slower…

You can't teach speed, but it only works if its combined with vision, instincts/awareness and balance.
The great burners wouldn't have been burners without elite straight line speed though so it works both ways.

My definition of elite speed is not faster than 75% of dbs, rb's and wr.
Elite speed is faster than 99%+ of the guys at those positions

There aren't even 100 players at the combine at DBs, rb and wr. So that means one person maybe per year which there isn't sub 4.3 every year. So by your definition there are about 6 people in the league with elite speed. Your definition......but pretty elite.

Elite to me is something special not, every team has 6 guys that fast

Do you really believe that? Pickens ran 4.48. Dj ran above 4.5 and Harris ran above 4.4. Porter Jr. Ran just below 4.5. Fitpatrick ran 4.48. You give me 6 Steelers who ran below 4.4.
