Talent? Coaching?

How about the tight ends.

"It might be the worst group of route runners in the NFL, okay? Half the time, they quit on routes. The pick that Trubisky threw, Pat Freiermuth makes a move and just quits."

"It's the only term I can think of, but our tight ends look like two turtles humping when they're blocking. Because you're not blocking anybody."

I think a lot of it this year is on the QB play and coaching.

QB - Pickett and Trubisky have been bad. The lack of production from this position is a big reason for the negative attitude and lack of effort from the offense, particularly the skill position players.

RB - Harris and Warren have been good, especially since the coaches started to ride the hot hand. One of the few positional groups that have improved as the season has progressed.

WRs - Talented, but unproductive. DJ should put up huge numbers, but we don't know how to use him properly. Pickens should get more targets, but fans overrate him thinking he is a dominant talent already. He doesn't give effort half the time and I think that is why his targets are lower. His QBs don't trust him to be where he's supposed to be. Just my opinion. Robinson has done nothing nor has Austin.

TEs - Maybe the most underachieving group. Freiermuth has regressed and just spoke about guys doing some of the detail work, yet his blocking is atrocious and Hoge highlighted his lack of effort on his routes. Washington has underwhelmed in the blocking department and Heyward is a gadget guy, IMO.

OL - It took awhile for the guards to get going but they're doing alright. Jones has been doing his part. Cole overachieved last year and overcorrected this season playing below his average play. Moore has been bad as was Okorafor while he was starting.

DL - Benton is on the sideline while the coaches play lesser talent. I don't get it. Larry O. has massively underachieved given his contract. That was a shaky contract to begin with and he's showing why.

ILB - Props to the coaches for getting the three new guys playing very well before injuries took them all out. What can you do now?

OLBs - When the Steelers finally get legit depth at OLB they stop using it and play Watt and Highsmith like 90% of the snaps. I don't understand.

DBs - Fitzpatrick is playing out of position, IMO, limiting his playmaking abilities. Peterson finally came around and JPJ has been good. I don't think Wallace is as bad as he's been playing.

The coaches have made interesting decisions with some starters and rotations in terms of snap counts. The offense has a JV-level scheme that constantly gets made fun of by analysts repeatedly calling it "Friday night." Ouch. The defensive philosophy isn't sustainable. Get by on splash plays. No, not a great scheme. There was too much talent with this group not to be good in yards against and points against.

The rookies on this team have stepped up and have been some of the best players. It's that next group of young players who have really disappointed with effort and attitude. There is zero leadership on this team from the coaching staff and the locker room. Retired players have called the team out for several years now and there are voices from inside the locker room calling guys out. The culture is 100% on coaching.

Meh....Let Omar bring in HIS guy.....who then will bring in their guys to fill out the coaching staff. Simple enough. You out there Mr. Rooney? I said...simple enough!!!!!

Boy he nailed it. I was thinking the only way this team forces some real across the board change is for the players to just check out and half *** things. Which it certainly looks like it. It doesn't take much.

Just the receivers alone half assing it, is enough to fubar the passing game. "Turtles humping" I'm keeping that one for future reference.

The only way back to the top is through a little suffering. This yearly no man's land is a dead end.

Article is saying what many here, including myself, have been saying for years. Worse coaching / staff in the NFL.

I’ll take the all world TJ WATT as an example. He isn’t being coached up on a daily basis, honestly zero in and watch him, he tends to take himself out of plays. This happens a little too much for an all world defensive player and it comes down to fine tuning, coaching him up on a daily basis. It just isn’t happening.

This is NOT a dis on TJ WATT, but no matter how good you are, you can’t just sit still and stay in that same place, this is somewhat what it happening because the existing coaching staff can take him no further.

You've lost convincingly to the two worst teams in the NFL-at home-with your playoff hopes on the line, the media is saying you've lost this team, the fans are saying you've lost this team, the PLAYERS are saying you've lost this team.........why would Tomlin WANT to stay here ?

To me, the longer Tomlin stays here and loses, the more his trade value and new contract value goes down. So I ask, why would he WANT to stay here ?

PS

Nice find Djfan, thank you

Been saying it for a number of years that this organization will NEVER win another SB with Tomlin.
Reset this thing after the season by sitting Tomlin down and telling him that you want to go in a new direction and would he be agreeable to a trade.
I’d have Omar on the phone with Washington and their front office folks about interest in Tomlin.
Omar tells them he wants their first , second in 24 and their second in 25.
Hire the very BEST most QUALIFIED candidate for your next coach. This is not nor should it be about diversity hiring but bringing in a young leader and innovator to take this organization to the current NFL and beyond.
Let said new HC hire his staff and open the pocket book up and pay the best assistants out there.
Let’s find out from new HC whether he thinks Kenny is salvageable or do we need to admit failure and redraft a new QB in 24.
If we don’t do the above or at least make an effort to do so and just extend this guy, then we will waste more valuable time because he’s not fixing what he’s broken.

Ego/job security. or perhaps it's both.

He would be crazy to leave, Paid over 12 million a year to coach for an organization that doesn't care if he wins as long as he doesn't have a losing season? Where else would he have that protected status?
Rooneys care about 2 things, the Rooney rule/ optics and making money while paying as little as possible to the players at contract time. They don't care about the fans or winning as long as the stadium is full on sundays.
Patriots are moving on from Bill and he's won 5 more superbowls than Tomlin.
Tomlin wouldn't get a pass like he does in Pittsburgh anywhere else.
Everyone blames Tomlin for this mess when really Tomlin isn't to blame, It's 100% the Rooneys that made the Steelers the joke of the nfl.

Hire Jon Gruden as OC and don’t give Shades an extension. Message sent.

Partly correct. The Steelers spend up to the cap limit every year. One could argue they pay too much for some players who don’t deserve it. That said, they have a smaller coaching staff and, except for Shades, pay below-average salaries to their assistants.

How much do they pay their assistants compared to the league average? I always see the Steelers are cheap, but have never seen a salary for their assistants? (I also recognize that an OC like Matt Canada would be one of the lowest paid in the league because he is one of the least qualified compared to a guy like Eric Bieniemy).

Shades isn't going to bring in any high priced assistants because: 1. that guy is going to challenge Shades to allow him to do his job. 2. Shades has to be the smartest guy in the room.

It's so simple to see, if Tomlin was allowed to take control of the defense from HOF DC LeBeau and if Tomlin was allowed to interview the GM candidates after Colbert left, then you damn well know Tomlin could hire any coach he wants, but elects not to because of 1 and 2 that I listed above.

So, he wants to handle things his way. I get it. The problem is that we have all seen the results of his way. It's below par. If we are trying to have his way removed, let's just remove the guy. Why try to find a way to keep him but not his ways?

It's craziness.

We have seen all that he can do. Second verse same as the first. We need new blood.

I totally agree!

DK insists the small staff is due to Tomlin wanting more control over things than the Steelers being cheap.

It does raise questions about whether a team can be consistently competitive from a game planning and preparation standpoint in today's NFL with such a small staff.

In the Steelers' case in recent years, the answer seems to be a resounding "no."
