Talent? Coaching?

Combination. There's enough talent on this team to be in contention but we don't have an elite QB to make the offense go. An elite coach would have us in the playoffs with the running game and defense. An average coach will get us to above .500 and miss out of the playoffs. A :poop: coach has us under .500 and not sniffing the playoffs.

We don't even have a middle of the road QB, This defense isn't great outside of a few guys getting turnovers and sacks its nowhere near good enough to not have a decent QB.

I still have hopes Kenny will be a middle of the pack QB. With that type of QB and a great team you can win a super bowl. It all just has to fall in line for a season and playoffs though.

I don't see Pickett as anything more than a solid back up QB.

Been saying it for a number of years that this organization will NEVER win another SB with Tomlin.
Reset this thing after the season by sitting Tomlin down and telling him that you want to go in a new direction and would he be agreeable to a trade.
I’d have Omar on the phone with Washington and their front office folks about interest in Tomlin.
Omar tells them he wants their first , second in 24 and their second in 25.
Hire the very BEST most QUALIFIED candidate for your next coach. This is not nor should it be about diversity hiring but bringing in a young leader and innovator to take this organization to the current NFL and beyond.
Let said new HC hire his staff and open the pocket book up and pay the best assistants out there.
Let’s find out from new HC whether he thinks Kenny is salvageable or do we need to admit failure and redraft a new QB in 24.
If we don’t do the above or at least make an effort to do so and just extend this guy, then we will waste more valuable time because he’s not fixing what he’s broken.
As mediocre as Tomlin has been for years and you think a team is dumb enough to part with a first and 2 seconds for him?

If a team offered even a single first for him I’d be shocked and it would be another Khanman thievery.

No way he brings three top picks, Art would have to be the biggest moron in PA to pass on a deal like that…but alas it is a pipe dream

He will bring zero compensation when he leaves

Mediocrity should never be the hope, ever. Steelers are not a great team. Who was the last mediocre QB to win a superbowl?? There are a bunch of hall of fame level QB that never won a superbowl. Without a top tier QB you have zero chance. A decades worth of superbowls were won by 3 guys, Brady Ben and manning. Its no coincidence the Steelers Pats and Colts were bad forever before these guys and bad again without them.

Yes I do think he could return that kind of value. . The media and the NFL hold Tomlin in very high regards. Don’t you hear the noise about teams lining up to hire him if available?

What they pay their assistants is not public information. I’m relying on what the local sports media says. They have the next-to-smallest coaching staff, ahead of only…wait for it…the Cheating Bastiges From New England.

DK insists the small staff is due to Tomlin wanting more control over things than the Steelers being cheap.

It does raise questions about whether a team can be consistently competitive from a game planning and preparation standpoint in today's NFL with such a small staff.

In the Steelers' case in recent years, the answer seems to be a resounding "no."
This makes more sense. I just never understood when they pay their star players and they pay Tomlin top dollar but then not pay assistants, which are really just a drop in the bucket of an NFL budget.

Bad forever before? How old are you?

At this point we really have no idea what they have in Pickett. It could very well be the system they are trying to force him to play in. I’m sure he is being told CONSTANTLY to not take chances that could result in turnovers. This could be why he looks tight and a beat behind. When you have to question everything each play, it doesn’t allow you to play free. Until they allow him to just play and improve along the way, you won’t know.

Could be that he just plays like Peyton Manning did his first year and never gets better. I for one would like to see before giving up on him.

He has shown enough flashes (the Bengals game in particular) that I'm willing to give him another season to prove himself with a different OC or, by some miracle, head coach.

With that being said, he also has shown so little in terms of overall production, I would not be upset if they decide to go in a different direction in the off-season, depending on who is available.

I still think they beat both the Cardinals and Patriots if he doesn't get injured, as the VERY least you can say about Kenny is that he protects the football and tends to make the necessary plays late in games.

Mitch is a turnover waiting to happen.

Its not coaching when he misses a wide open guy 3 yards away with an inaccurate throw.

Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm not saying it is the case with Kenny (he may very well suck as much as you think he does), but I'd imagine if a QB is not confident/comfortable in the offense he is in, even the simplest things can become much more difficult than they should be.

I'm of the view that Canada's offense (which they still have to use this season) is so ****** that it might not be fair to judge Kenny until he gets a chance in another one.

Was it merely coincidence that the Steelers had their first 400 yards of offense in eons (with Kenny looking as good as he ever has) once Canada stopped calling the plays?

Don't know, but I do not think it is in the Steelers DNA to give up on a first round pick after just two seasons, especially given they were so fed up with Canada and his scheme they went against said DNA by firing him mid season.

The whole, “ the rooney’s are cheap” thing is bullshit from a bygone era for reasons that no longer exist.

Yinzers continue to repeat it and it sort of makes our fanbase look dumb. The coaching staff thing is way more about traditional setups than money.

The Rooneys have brought big money assistants in often in the past… they are certainly not opposed to that … DL, Munch, Haley… all of those were ex head coaches… you pay a premium for those guys as coordinators or position coaches…

The Steelers have all the premium staff positions filled.. tge “ positions” they don’t have are assistant coordinator types and a lot of analysts… because we don’t utilize analysts and their playcalling is not as collaborative as other teams …

Those positions are 50k a year type jobs… maybe 100k on a few… and they even have some of the guys on the staff, just in the front office… not with the gameday staff..

It would maybe be a 500-750k fix to get premium coaches and analysts in that position… well under what they would make in concessions for an extra playoff game…

The rooneys donate lots more money than that all the time… it’s virtually insignificant….

That old stigma came pre salary cap and when the non football Rooneys still had a huge say in things…

And that kind of gets to what I was referring to about whether the Steelers are putting themselves at a disadvantage in a league where most teams now have assistant coaches for their assistant coaches.

It may very well be time to get with the times and dramatically expand the staff, whether Tomlin wants to or not.

Big Ben himself said they are cheap.
