I don't think a team will give all that up for a one-year rental.

Apparently Pat Kirwan (former GM) says a trade can actually be done. Forgive me if this is not entirely accurate but he basically said they give authority to Bell's agent to speak with interested team. They make in informal agreement the Steelers are fully aware of. Bell then signs the tag. He can then be traded and signed by said team.

Now I'm no expert on the CBA and it might sound a little dicey, but if Pat Kirwan is saying it can be done, I'll take his word for it. After today and the OL letting loose their feelings on the matter, it's probably best for all parties involved. Jon Ledyard (who's quite knowledgeable on all things NFL) said a trade could be done as well.

It’s all predicated on when Bell signs the tag. The longer the wait, the less likely it occurs.

In this day and age of superstar players, this is the most likely scenario. Bell's agent sniffs out a team willing to sign Bell to a long-term deal and a wink wink agreement is put in place. That team makes a legitimate trade offer to the Steelers - to help grease the wheels - Bell signs the tag and - boom - he gets ****-canned right out of the Burgh. Not sure what the Steelers can get for him, but they can play hard-ball and refuse to move Bell unless his agent convinces the other team to up the offer. All this will take a backseat to the team on the field on Sundays, trying to win games. But this may be the best way for the Steelers to optimize Bell's value in a trade. Find a team that really wants this SOB and send him on his merry way. If I'm the Steelers I take the best offer and never look back.

I think a trade for anything significant is unlikely. A team would need to want Bell now, for this season specifically - a missing piece type acquisition. Otherwise all a team is trading for is to not compete in free agency and they’d be paying out the nose regardless.

You and lke make good points. Why would a team give up picks unless they really think they can win now, when they can just wait till next year and not have to give up anything.

But a question, with the Jimmy G. hype in San Fran after last season and them not having the best backfield, would they possibly bite? That's about the only team I can think of that may be a possibility.

As an aside, someone mentioned these OL are out of line and "do you really care about your co-workers when it comes down to it?" Co-workers and NFL teammates are two separate animals. These guys live together during training camp & forge really close friendships. They host dinners for one another etc. On the field, they rely on one another so much more than any co-worker relies on theirs it's just not even in the same ballpark.

Ramon Foster's reaction was the most telling to me. Guy is the union rep for the Steelers & NFLPA, a veteran and understands the business side of things. When Bell, who thinks he's all-world by himself, which diminishes his protectors essentially, and then not showing up when he apparently said he would, and then has his agent do his talking for him, it affects these guys a lot (obviously as we saw today). Forget the money at this point (even if $14.5 million is pretty nice), these guys are talking about wanting to be apart of something special, and Bell apparently has no interest in it. I'd be pissed too.

What if he is staying out now because he knows he can't pass a drug test. Pure speculation but losing $855k this week for a guy who makes clear he is all about the money and nothing else? Hard to understand Bell's logic here.
