Tariffs

You're proving the point of others that the tariffs are indeed a bargaining chip, with countries willing to negotiate and hence the exemptions.
Do you think Trump may have, in part, issued the exemptions because other countries are willing to talk, while agreeing that it also stopped the panic selling? Will Trump's plan come to fruition, who knows, but it isn't going to be decided in days, weeks, or even months.
The exemptions are on electronics and other products that mostly come from China. They haven't been willing to negotiate, all they've done is slap retaliatory tariffs on us.

Agree that China is the key, just who blinks first will tell the tale.

Hopefully we'll all be patient and wait this out. That maybe impossible with the never-ending anxiety coming from the "experts" on the national media, but honestly, how much of our money does Amazon need?

The recent stock market fluctuations would have been the tip of the iceberg. The slide was halted because the tariffs were paused. What do you think was gonna happen when the price of literally every single consumer product started to go through the roof?

You are making stuff up. First, not "every single product" is subject to tariffs. Second, the price increase passed on to consumers is never 100%. The seller eats some of the cost increase and depending on the market and the number of suppliers available, may eat as much as 50%. Third, the small price increase in a limited number of items is nothing compared to the rampant true inflation the past 4 years wrought on the economy.

The tariff price increases will be offset long-term by vastly reduced deficit spending and the buying of debt (i.e., printing of trillions of dollars of unbacked currency) that results in genuine inflation of 5% or more.

The panic about tariffs is just another "Orange Man Bad" propaganda point. Russian collusion, oligarchy, traitor, gutting critical Fed spending like circumcisions for Kenyans, Putin's puppet, tariff ruin the world's economy. All a bunch of garbage. I can't believe anybody still falls for this ****.

Economists knew it, they made sure Trump knew it, hence the pause and now the "exemptions".

Tell me some of the other brilliant points these same economists made about the wonders of NAFTA and "free trade" and open markets and the importance of immigration to feed the labor market and the benefits of deficit spending. Anybody who still follows the globalist mantra is a fool.

To repeat - **** the world economy. I would prefer to make American 100% isolationist. Boot out the illegals, make our goods at home, harvest our energy resources, and sell our goods to foreign nations who want to buy. No more wars, no more American troops overseas, no more hundreds of billions shipped off for "foreign aid," i.e., money laundering, no more freebies to the 3rd world (time to take care of yourselves), no more interventionist policies or regime changes.

Tariffs on foreign goods to boost Federal revenues and protect American businesses. American consumers pay 5% more on some products. We build products here. We rely on nobody else.

Watch the world come begging at our door for access to America's consumers. They need our business; we don't need their cheap knock-off ****.

Doesn't Trump making a list of exemptions---at the same time the Chinese announce "we will not call Trump"----a demonstration of who already blinked first?

Whoops, new news: semiconductor tariffs back on next week. And flexibility for some companies.

"You have to show a certain flexibility. No one should be so rigid." DJT

Trump says tariffs are going to be universal.
Response: "You can't be so rigid! Flexibility is key!!"
Trump says will negotiate tariffs, be more flexible.
Response: "Trump blinked! He's a weak liar!"
Trump stands firm on China tariffs
Response: "He's unleashing a trade war!!"
Trump waives a select few Chinese tariffs
Response: "Weak, blinked first! Liar! Trade war! Russia, Russ ... ehh, China, China, China!!"

He’s making international trade policy based on nothing more than his daily whims and you guys act like every pronouncement, backtrack and reversal is some brilliant, well thought out strategy. It’s hilarious to me.

onefor, as a rule of thumb, if you ever see this (image below) as a response to anything you post in R&P, carefully reconsider your position. As it is assuredly, 100% incorrect in any way of common sense and is plunging into lunacy at breath-taking speed.

We get it, you hate Trump's economic policies. You seem to be in the minority though.

I happen to believe he is not going far enough

1. Confiscate all property owned in the US by China
2. Confiscate all businesses owned in the US by China
3. Cancel all debt with China (as they did to us after WW2)
4. Close the borders between Mexico and Canada to all trade until they remove ALL BARRIERS to "free trade". No limiting quotas, no impediments of any kind.
5. End all taxes levied at the Federal level and implement a fair (percentage to be determined) Federal "Sales" Tax
6. Exempt all transactions for basic necessities, medical expenses, Child and adult care, 2nd hand/used purchases, and maybe a few others I can't think of right now
7. End all foreign "Aid"
8. Recall all Military assets to the US mainland or her territories, unless the host country is willing to foot the expense of deploying them 100%
9. Withdraw from the UN, and kick them out of the US
10. Reduce our membership in NATO to simply a minor contributing member, we also step back from any leadership role.
11. Withdraw from the WHO
12. Implement a National ID for all citizens. This will link to Social Security, Drivers License, Passports, etc.
13. Different National ID for all individuals allowed to reside in the US. This link to Drivers License, Non-resident tax programs, legal data bases and DNA libraries
13. ALL FEDERAL elections will require paper ballots (can be processed by machine WITHOUT connection to any off site networks) National ID (No need to register to vote)

I FULLY understand that I may very well be in the minority on these points

I would think the list would be much longer than that, probably even a number on just this forum alone.

I also forgot,
14. Deport all individuals here from non OFFICALLY allied countries.
15. Student Visas will require that you sign application stating that you are to study, keep your mouth shut and return home when done. No activist participation of any kind, silent or otherwise. Display stickers for or against anything also counts. You are welcome to get an education then return and be any kind of activist you want.

16. No more student visas to Chinese nationals. They're duty when they come here is to steal technology.

I would simply seize all Chinese assets in the U.S. as reparations for Covid. Every other nation should do the same, frankly.

One day Trump said pauses are not being considered and 2 days later all tariffs are halted except China. The market went down, people panicked, and Trump caved. I don't think this was his master plan. It might work in the long run, but the market did not respond like he thought. The main issue is China which we are in a standoff against and if anything they are winning because we dropped the tariffs on electronics along with still needing them for things like medicine. China has the ability to drag this out for a while.

Can someone else, with the ability to come up with $50., explain tariffs to the class?

I might be in the minority here, I don’t seem to be in the minority in the real world.

That’s a whole lot of typing to try and change the subject though😆

It always boggles the mind that some people attach themselves to a political figure and will defend him or her to the death on every single issue no matter what. I’ve never had such total unquestioning allegiance to a politician and I don’t get it. I didn’t get the Clinton worship, I didn’t get the Obama worship and I don’t get the Trump worship. (I won’t say the Biden worship cause that never existed, he was elected purely out of Trump hate).

I thought Reagan was one of our greatest presidents but he certainly made missteps and people were allowed to admit it back then. It’s weird how no matter what Trump does, even when he gets checked on it and has to reverse it within days, people will still act like he couldn’t possibly have made a mistake. Weird and a bit scary. Cultlike.

Some of the policies you advocate will cause an enormous amount of pain to American citizens. There will be elections. Some of you don’t seem to understand that all your dreams of isolationist glory will be wiped away when prices go up, a recession hits and Republicans get voted out of office in two and four years. People aren’t gonna wait 10 or 20 years for manufacturing to shift to the US while they can’t afford clothes, medicine, food, cars, homes, etc etc etc. There’s a way to bring more manufacturing jobs here with tax incentives etc. but it will take time and it won’t be an overwhelming shift. We don’t have the workforce for it and we don’t have the appetite for the much higher prices such a major shift would entail.

A smart trade policy would encourage more manufacturing here while not shooting ourselves in the foot by making raw materials, components, and things we don’t have the capacity or desire to produce, more expensive.

He ran on this approach. He promised this approach since 2022. He adopted a significant part of this approach his first term.

The idea that "you guys" think this is some surprise is laughable.

I personally wish he would stick to the proposed tariffs. When he proposes the tariffs, you freak out. When he does what your ilk want - soften the tariff threat - you chastise him.

I might be in the minority here, I don’t seem to be in the minority in the real world.
I guess it depends on where you get your information.
That’s a whole lot of typing to try and change the subject though😆
Not changing the subject, I admitted acceptance of your position without agreeing with you.

When Trump does something I am fundamentally against, I will address it then. So far he hasn’t done that, though I have made it clear he (that I believe) isn’t going far enough.

What you perceive as backtracking and reversals, I accept as negotiations. I also will wait and see how things turn out before passing judgment, something that many are not doing. Many are continuing to react to every single thing because of their hatred for ONE PERSON, at all cost.

Reagan didn’t have to deal with Social Media, if he had, things would be much the same as today.
Some of the policies you advocate will cause an enormous amount of pain to American citizens.
Your right, but much less than from the total collapse we are headed for under Spineless Republicans and morally corrupt spend spend spend Democrats.
There will be elections. Some of you don’t seem to understand that all your dreams of isolationist glory will be wiped away when prices go up, a recession hits and Republicans get voted out of office in two and four years.
Yep, because people don’t want to hear the truth from Trump and every other politician will continue to ignore the truth to keep their power
People aren’t gonna wait 10 or 20 years for manufacturing to shift to the US while they can’t afford clothes, medicine, food, cars, homes, etc etc etc.
No, people with money don’t want to be inconvenienced and will not wait. People without money have gotten by forever by prioritizing spending, buying secondhand and surviving. These people are used to waiting for things to get better, if it turns out that even the smallest improvement is seen, they won’t abandon him. They know under anyone else it will NEVER happen
There’s a way to bring more manufacturing jobs here with tax incentives etc.
I would be interested in YOUR ideas of how that would work. Incentives work if companies get more than they already are, think increased profits. That expenditure isn’t going to be worth the upside. Now when you use the stick method, the mindset changes completely. They now have to make the expenditure to keep from being destroyed.
but it will take time and it won’t be an overwhelming shift. We don’t have the workforce for it and we don’t have the appetite for the much higher prices such a major shift would entail.
Because too many people are being taken care of. Cut off EVERYONE from all financial assistance except for the very small number that truly need it, then you have a huge workforce available. Starvation is a huge motivator.
A smart trade policy would encourage more manufacturing here while not shooting ourselves in the foot by making raw materials, components, and things we don’t have the capacity or desire to produce, more expensive.
We don’t need to encourage anything, we need to penalize bad business decisions. Raw materials are worthless if you don’t have a market to sell them. There are very few things that we do not have. Our problem isn’t lack of resources, it’s lack of willingness to use those we have because of appeasing environmental groups and corrupt judges and politicians.
