It isn't strictly about tariffs it is also about non-tariff trade restrictions that have the same or similar effect.

That was the best he could get last time with congress full of Rinos and under democrat control. He is renegotiating with control of both houses of congress and the ability to play hardball.

Yup.

Autopact in 1965. Canada's Lester B Pearson and LBJ signed, of their free will.
Americans immediately began complaining, in spite of the auto trade skyrocketing.

In 1986, the CUSFTA (Canada US Free Trade Agreement) was signed by Reagan and Mulroney, moving free trade well beyond autos beginning in 1989.
Just a couple years later, Bush the Elder brought in Mexico (why?), and the NAFTA agreement was signed by him, Mulroney and Carlos Salinas. This came into effect in 1994.

On Nov 30, 2018, TRUMP, Trudeau and Pena Nieto all signed the USMCA agreement, which came into effect on July 1, 2020. This agreement's key provisions were:
Improved rules of origin for automobiles, trucks, and other products.
Disciplines on currency manipulation.
Modernization and strengthening of food and agriculture trade.
New protections for U.S. intellectual property.
The pact also requires 70 percent of a vehicle's steel and aluminum to originate in North America, with steel being both melted and poured on the continent.
For the first time, the new agreement also mandates that 40 to 45 percent of the parts for any tariff-free vehicle must come from a so-called high-wage factory.

Are you suggesting that that the succession of weak American leaders from LBJ, Reagan, Bush and Trump all got their American ***** whooped by
Canadians and then Mexicans, each time?

It's kinda weird that the strong and mighty US were the ones that cried and needed new agreements each time.......were they bad negotiators, bad at understanding economics or did they just get beat, every time, by the smarter Canadians and Mexicans?

Not really. Partly most American politicians are ignorant of economics, partly they are afraid of criticism from other countries and the media, and partly they get bribed by other countries and multinational corporations.
As we see the way President Trump is attacked for putting America first.
Luckily Trump DGAF.

Lol. So LBJ, Reagan, Bush the Elder and Trump 45 all made bad deals on behalf of the US?

Which trade deal, ever, signed by the US, was good for the US......or have all your POTUSes lost each and every time?

I just don't not understand the present stance of Trump 47 that the US has always been fuucked, like a cheap *****, and is somehow still the greatest economy the world has ever known.

That just does not square.

Don't forget Clinton. NAFTA looked good on paper but in practice it didn't work out so well for us.
Our economy was good enough to withstand a lot of **** but it's been getting worse over the last 20 years so it's time to reverse course and look out for ourselves first.
Historically other countries have had higher tariffs on our stuff than we do on theirs.

Granted. the left will scream against anything Trump, but I believe (hope) that this tariff thing will end up biting them. The talk is all about a recession and I agree, if the tariffs continue, that is a real possibility. But it's a negotiating tool and I read this morning that the USGA (?) is reporting that over 50 countries want to negotiate. If that's true, the pain that the media forecasts for all of us may short lived and a false narrative. Fingers crossed.
