Steelers Film Room: 73 Yard Touchdown Run By Giants RB Rashad Jennings

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense gave up quite a few double explosive plays last season and in their 2014 preseason opener Saturday night against the New York Giants, the first-team defense allowed running back Rashad Jennings to scamper 73 yards for a score.

Pre snap, the Steelers defense is in their nickel sub package with inside linebacker Sean Spence lining up outside on the left edge. Lawrence Timmons is manning the gap on the strong side of the Giants formation.

This is a 62 toss power trap play by the Giants as the right guard pulls perfectly and the left side of the Giants offensive line blocks down to the inside on defensive end Cameron Heyward and runs him completely out of the hole. Heyward took blame after the game and said he was too flat on the play.

Timmons also missed Jennings, but you can see in the still shots below, the he was clearly held by the pulling guard and Jennings is off to the races.

In the secondary, both safeties, Mike Mitchell and Will Allen, took poor angles and thus neither can make the tackle.

While this play did bust open at the line, the secondary can’t let this go for a touchdown and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said as much after the game.

We are going to have runs that breakout every now and there. We’ve got to get it on the ground in the secondary. Sometimes those things break free, they have to be 8, 10, 12 yard runs not 78-yard runs. It was a gap integrity issue in the core. That is less of a concern. I am more concerned about when those things do occur we do a good job of trying to minimize the explosion play and make it an 8, 10, 12 yard gain not a 78-yard play.

As for the Giants take on the play, Jennings gave credit to quarterback Eli Manning.

It was a play that Eli [Manning] made sure we were in the right play. It was perfect. Offensive line beat the double team. A puller came around and put a body to clear the hole and it gave me an opportunity for a one on one. One on one battles, you have to win, and that’s what I did. The rest was just a race.

No question. And possibly the biggest part of the play. However, the rest of the defense parted like the red sea. where were the safties?

When you look at the Gifs....you wonder what heyward was doing......This **** has to stop or we are looking at 8-8 .....again

I think he was picking his nose or ,,, thinking about a call in to geico...

At first I thought maybe they had an x stunt on with Timmons.. but no.

Heyward got rickrolled down the line and it wasn't even a double team, Jones had contain and tried to squeeze down but...

The Safeties had bad angles and spence was lined up WAYYY out side to the left.. Timmons got mugged but needs to be able to make that play.

A hold that wasn't called. I will not blame Timmons. Heywood wasn't in his gap, Spence maybe lined up wrong, and two safeties took bad angles.

I feel if this had to happen let it be game one preseason, where the D can learn from the mistakes. Plus I would like to think with Polamalu and Shazier in it would have been a different outcome.

So game 1 I will live with, come the end of preseason and they are making gap mistakes then perhaps a uh oh.......................

Spence was lined up where he supposed to be. Manning audibled after he saw our alignment. Great call and the hold didnt help. Still like to see someone in the secondary chase him down.

If The Spence or the D didn't line up right, then that is on Timmons who sets the D this year.

I agree that it is game 1 of the preseason and it is best for it to happen now.

In 2013 it happened against the Raiders and in a season where many point to Antonio Browns sideline misstep on a game ending miracle play as the "one missed play from the playoffs" the Terrell Pryor 93 yard TD run is a better indicator of the real reason this team missed the playoffs.

We simply gave up too many big plays that cost us games.

That 93 yard TD run was as egregious, as it was inexcusable. Much better to get them out of the way now and most importantly learn from them when the games don't count.

From the guy who bemoans arrogance..........

Lol, I'm not trying to be arrogant. You posted a terrible angle replay last night in an attempt to prove me wrong when I said he was held. Kudos to you for coming back with a better angle and I'm being sincere, not saying it sarcastically. The arrogant people pretend they are never wrong or ignore something totally when they are.

Exactly....

anyone want to tell me how Timmons got wrapped up by the dancing bear with h is arms at his sides while standing in the hole?

Im not a Timmons hater. So put the gun away. He still got beat / held / however you want to put it.. and it shouldn't have happened like that. He has to make that play.. just like Heyward cant get get blown out .

Say what now? Getting beat and getting held are both the same thing and both are the player's fault equally? Regardless of which player you are talking about, that makes no sense at all. Getting beat to the hole and getting wrapped up illegally to prevent you from getting to the hole are two very different things altogether.

He could have perhaps have did more to bring attention to the fact he was held.....

Which brings me back to one wish I had for years.

For every play to be challengeable....

Before there is a slash but the game will slow down...

its this

A team is granted so many challenges per game. That wouldn't change.

If you use up all your challenge on ref mishaps, you would receive no extra.

But a obvious miscall on a hold? like a mugging ?

Make every play challengeable...............

The Hoodie suggested this very thing over the off season.

No that's not what im saying. He got to the point of attack . How is it that the big line man is standing with him chest to chest with his arms around him? Im saying he has to be better than that. Sometimes being held is inevitibable.. you are grabbed. . Im sure Timmons didn't want to be bear hugged and loved on. If you don't know what im saying , im sorry.

If a D lineman stands up on every play.. he will get knocked on his butt.

If he doesn't tie up his jersey it will get grabbed..

If im a running back blocking in the back field,, if I don't stay low and get under his pads,, that d line man will run my *** over.... Timmons got bear hugged in the hole.. He wasnt ready.

Yeah, you definitely have me confused now lol. Not sure I'm getting you.

It's a hold, but it wasn't called. Now the problem becomes the defensive line, specifically Heyward, was out of the play. Then the secondary, as Tomlin put it, needs to keep that to a 10-12 yard gain, not a 73-yard touchdown run. There will be big plays where no penalties are called and the rest of the defense needs to do their job still.

Im not all that worried about a single bad play that was made worse by uncalled holding on the second series of the preseason opener... I saw more positives than negatives by far out of the D last night....

We have to consider they played without McLendon, Shazier and Polamalu as well.

And that it was straight vanilla D without gameplanning, and that again... it was the second series of preseason... too much overreaction on one play...

I could discredit the one play if I didn't see it more times last year than I had in my entire lifetime from this defense. Preventing a 73-yard touchdown run is a little more than just a "straight vanilla" gameplan.

Meh...can't do much bout the non-call on Timmons but the safties need to snuff that crap like Tomlin said.

Definitely the most disappointing part was the secondary's inability to bring him down. Jennings isnt a burner. Allen in particular looked slow as hell..
