Like most Yinzers, I was disappointed that they didn't take Marino.
There were a few mitigating factors since I'm old and remember stuff (Marino graduated from Pitt in 1983, I graduated from another local college in 1982)
1. At the time everyone figured Bradshaw had a few years left and he would recover from his elbow injury. He didn't.
2. Statisically Marino's senior year at Pitt was not as good as his junior year, due mostly to the fact that HC Jackie Sherrill left and was replaced by DC Foge Fazio. Foge was a good defensive mind but didn't know jack **** about offense.
3. Rumors that Marino was doing a lot of coke his senior year. May or may not have been true but I have never heard from reliable sources that it was true.
4. Rivera wasn't a bad draft pick and may have been a good addition to the team if he hadn't got drunk and paralyzed himself in a car crash his rookie year. He passed away last year.
5. Mark Malone was Bradshaw's heir apparent drafted in 1980 and may well have been a good QB but he tore up his knee in his second or third season and was never the same after that. The first Mrs. Burgundy worked at a sporting goods store in Cranberry in the 80's and he would come in all the time to buy fishing stuff. She allowed that he was always very nice, although he would normally wear a ballcap and sunglasses so people wouldn't recognize him.
Don't try to confuse me with facts, Ron. My mind is made up.
