The Coronavirus thread

In an unrelated story, Dow is up 1167 today.

In another unrelated story, Dow battered by 1,000 point slide today, S&P nears bear market.

Another irony in the US rollout and preparation/panic: What would be the absolute probably best thing that could happen to Washington and New York State at the moment? More effective than even Containment Zones or Pharisee-level hand washing rituals?

We should all be praying for a wave of unseasonably warm and humid 88 degree days to roll across much of the country. We could quickly attribute it to Climate Change and say it means we'll all be dead in 12 years if we don't get the government to do something fast, but it will probably do more to save us in the short term than even a mythical Dream Team Starting Five of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, FDR, Woodrow Wilson, and Hillary Clinton could do at the helm (even though Barack didn't seem to do too much on H1N1 until we had 1000 deaths in US and he certainly never closed travel to Mexico).

For those who've had trouble understanding why I and um, a few others, have raised issues with the WH handling of this situation, here is exhibit A.

There is a pretty good likelihood that if warm weather doesn't help contain coronavirus, that this will kill and thin out a significant portion of people with underlying health issues, primarily those older.

Now granted, most of these people are already "on the way out" but for those with loved ones and people of failing health, that is small comfort when they are taken from you earlier than without the virus.

It sounds like all the efforts we are making to "contain" is all about this group of people. If you are under 60 and do not have health issues, this IS no different than influenza. If you are over 60 and have any health issues, this is a serious virus that brings rapid, strong complications to your lung function.

I think by the time it's all said and done, this virus will touch all of us in some way, shape or form. Either an elder relative in your family or a friend's family or someone at work will get sick with complications. We will see how it all shakes out. It literally is day to day.

Liberals loved Obama shipping our jobs overseas. Liberals are fine with trade that favors our enemies and other countries but not the USA.

Also pollution, worker abuse, and slave wages are okay in non-white nations, so moving those jobs and polluting somewhere else is fine.

Coronavirus conference is canceled due to... Coronavirus

A conference to discuss the impact of coronavirus on business in the US has been cancelled - because of a sudden rise in infections in New York.

The roundtable, called Doing Business Under Coronavirus, was canned after 173 cases of the infection were confirmed in the east coast city, where the conference was supposed to be held on Friday.

The Council on Foreign Relations organised the event to help support the businesses facing increased pressure from the impact of Covid-19.

Other conferences, scheduled from March 11 to April 3, also had to be scrapped - including roundtables in New York and Washington as well as national events across the US.

Young people capitalize on cheap coronavirus flights: 'If I die, I die'

As people around the world canceled their trips because of fears of the new coronavirus, Ashley Henkel booked three.

Henkel, 20, is taking advantage of cheap flights to see North America. She lives in California's Central Valley, but this summer she'll be in Vancouver, New York City and Portland, Oregon.

A college student itching to travel, she's one of many people staring the deadly virus in the face and saying, "Whatever."

No doubt... the thing is even among the elderly It mirrors viral pneumonia rates... viral pneumonia infects around 200 million people a year worldwide... the severe version of it kills around 10% of hospitalized patients

My argument remains, why is this such a big deal now... we can look at the various cruise ships to see worse case scenarios for contagion and death rates, and its not going to be the next plague... it wont even tip the scales at the 1918 spanish flu levels... so why the absolute panic this time?

Ebola is horrific... all the novel flus of the past 30 years were more widespread quicker... California is basically breeding old school pandemics we thought we obliterated and zero ***** were given...

Like i love to over sensationalize these pandemics and this is easily the least scary worse case scenario one out there... it’s almost as if it was designed to only target the old and the ill... hey i have elderly family... I worry about them getting the flu or well anything, but I'm not closing airports over it...

I want to know what changed between Sars, Swine, avian, and the last Major ebola outbreak And this...

California's Democrat Governor Praises Trump's Coronavirus Response: 'Every Single Thing he Said They Followed Through On'

By Jason Lemon On 3/9/20 at 1:29 PM EDT

California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom praised president President Donald Trump on Monday for supporting his state as it combats the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Trump and his administration have faced criticism for their response to the coronavirus. But Newsom, who declared a state of emergency in California last Wednesday, shared positive remarks about the way the president has responded and supported the West Coast state.

"We had a private conversation, but he said, 'We're gonna do the right thing' and 'You have my support, all of our support, logistically and otherwise,'" Newsom told reporters at a Monday news conference.

"He said everything I could have hoped for," the governor asserted. "And we had a very long conversation and every single thing he said, they followed through on," he noted.

Newsom said that he has received "consistent" support from Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, who is leading the administration's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Many have raised concerns and criticized the administration's handling of the pandemic, particularly after Trump dubbed coronavirus a "new hoax" from the Democrats during a rally at the end of February. The president also later questioned health experts on why the virus couldn't be treated with an ordinary flu shot, and suggested that people with COVID-19 could still go to work during an interview with Fox News.

Even some Republicans have urged Trump to follow the advice of health experts and avoid sharing information not supported by science.

"I listen to the scientists when it comes to the numbers, and I would encourage the president if he's going to report things to make sure the science is behind what he's saying," GOP Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who generally defends the president, told reporters on Thursday.

Trump himself has repeatedly pushed back against critics, arguing that the media and Democrats are unfairly attacking his administration's response to coronavirus.

"The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant," he tweeted on Monday morning.

More than 100,000 people have been infected by coronavirus globally, with the majority of those cases being in China, where the virus was first discovered. The World Health Organization officially puts the death toll from confirmed cases at 3.4 percent.

But health experts have estimated that the overall death rate may be 2 percent or less, noting that many cases go untested and are not confirmed. Symptoms are mild for many individuals, meaning they may never even realize they've contracted COVID-19.

According to the available data, those under 30 have a significantly lower chance of dying from the virus, while the death rate increases among the elderly. Those with pre-existing health conditions – such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory problems – appear to be at greater risk of facing serious complications from the virus.
