The mask thing everyone is a little wrong about
it absolutely reduces viral load from spittle and large respiratory droplets
Basic masks may or may not defend against some aerosols… the CDC says this virus isn’t an aerosol… measles is an aerosol but its smaller than the coronavirus… this is right above the edge on what they consider an aerosol so really nobody knows
there are some fallacies when discussing mask effectiveness… first off the surgical masks are traditionally 60-40% effective in protecting against even basic viruses.. they are literally designed just to catch spittle… they aren’t respiratory protection per se
secondly homemade ones vary greatly in protection because of material, thickness, fit ect…. Bandanas only catch the largest spittle …
these masks “work” in as much as any reduction in viral load drops contagion percentages… viruses die and lose the ability to replicate when exposed to the environment over time, but the more viral load on an object thebetter the chance that some of the viruses may survive and remain active on it… plus the more there are the better the chance some contacts another person and gains entry into their system…
the professional respiratory masks may stop aerosols… the thing is they are all tested against an average sized molecule for osha purposes, but some have shown they protect against objects 10 to 20 times smaller than the 300 micron standard… 3m had some interesting science out there a while back on it
the reality is mask effectiveness or noneffectiveness is really speculative because when trying to test against real time viruses, they haven’t had a good way to determine if the virus can make it through and be viable…
typically they just run a gas molecule of a certain size through the mask and use a detector on the other side to see if it fits the 95,99 or 100% standards for respiratory protection… its really not the same
masks also don’t protect the eyes… the third largest infection site for viruses… well except full faces… and nobody is wearing those out lol
the bottom line is the masks provided a small amount of protection, but in a closed environment with no air circulating and hundreds of people, it’s probably a very low amount of protection…
to say there isn’t any benefit is absurd…. To act like wearing a mask when next to someone for hours is helping much is equally absurd…
to demand masks outside in open space is just propaganda driven dumbfuckery
