The Coronavirus thread

As I said numerous times, we are going to get lots and lots and lots of cases. We have had 30-50 million cases of flu just this season, yet for some reason we don't get breathless reporting of every new daily number of cases.

No, staying home is not such a bad thing. It will slow the spread of both. But there is also still no reason for most people to panic. But you seem to really want to, so I'm not going to keep trying to convince you otherwise.

Gonpull up the older outbreak threads... spike is consistent lol

The big question is twofold... once this passes are we going to use it as a template to fix the holes in our system before a really deadly outbreak happens, or will we look at the final numbers, determine it was an overreaction and just go back to farting past the graveyard until something wipes us out

But there is also still no reason for most people to panic. But you seem to really want to

Just dropping this here for reference. Not only has he gone off the reservation, but trolling or not, he's taking "glee" in both the pandemic and the world-wide panic. That's disturbing. He's clearly taking some sense of joy from this. Borderline demented.

And SNS is done as a reliable service here.

SNS is Fake News, lmao!

It used to be a reliable news source for our tiny little segment of the planet. But the Chief Editor and owner of the service turned into a twittering chicken little. He's clapping at the economic collapse. Most disturbing, though - he's cheering on the rising numbers of infections and deaths. He's gleefully rooting for it.

Disturbing to watch.

Israeli virologist urges world leaders to calm public, slams ‘unnecessary panic’

‘People think this virus is going to attack them all, and then they’re all going to die,’ says Prof. Jihad Bishara. ‘Not at all. In fact, most of those infected won’t even know it’

A leading Israeli virologist on Sunday urged world leaders to calm their citizens about the coronavirus pandemic, saying people were being whipped into unnecessary panic.

Prof. Jihad Bishara, the director of the Infectious Disease Unit at Petah Tikva’s Beilinson Hospital, said that some of the steps being taken in Israel and abroad were very important, but the virus is not airborne, most people who are infected will recover without even knowing they were sick, the at-risk groups are now known, and the global panic is unnecessary and exaggerated.

“I’ve been in this business for 30 years,” Bishara said in a Channel 12 interview. “I’ve been through MERS, SARS, Ebola, the first Gulf war and the second, and I don’t recall anything like this. There’s unnecessary, exaggerated panic. We have to calm people down.

“People are thinking that there’s a kind of virus, it’s in the air, it’s going to attack every one of us, and whoever is attacked is going to die,” he said.

“That’s not the way it is at all. It’s not in the air. Not everyone [who is infected] dies; most of them will get better and won’t even know they were sick, or will have a bit of mucus.”

But in Israel and around the world, “everybody is whipping everybody else up into panic — the leaders, via the media, and the wider public — who then in turn start to stress out the leaders. We’ve entered some kind of vicious cycle.”

He urged the public to internalize that “we’re talking about a virus that is not airborne. Infection is via droplet transmission… Only if you are close to someone who has the virus, and you get the saliva when he sneezes or coughs, can you get ill. And if you don’t then maintain personal hygiene,” primarily by washing hands.

He said the virus did not appear to be “too intelligent” — unlike flu, “which is very intelligent, it changes, adapts, and it infects people via their airway passages.”

I would hope that it would never get that bad.The hysteria is completely unnecessary. Thanks media.

This isn't media driven hysteria. People are doing it to themselves at this point. Just go read twitter. It's pathetic. People are actually blaming Trump for not ordering more ventilators from a German manufacturer in spite of the fact that Trump has told the Governors of all 50 states not to wait for the federal government, order what they need and the federal government will support it.

If people are out actually living their lives, they are getting cancelled for "spreading the disease." Hell, Mark Cuban is encouraging people to over-react. No one needs the media or the government to feed this frenzy. People are creating their own narratives at this point.

Agreed, at this point the media is only partially to blame. The CDC making rash announcements like "this virus is 10x more deadly than the flu" without any real data to extrapolate from. President Trump telling everyone that this social distancing could go on until July or August...or longer does not help. As long as the government continues to over react then the citizens will continue to do the same. People always look to leadership, if leadership is showing fear, the people will show fear. This is true in sports, the military, and life.

Have to disagree here in part. Yes, people are over-reacting. Cuban is. Etc.

But the media is absolutely driving this hysteria as well. 24x7 coverage. Fear mongering. I'll give you an example that JUST happened.

On Fox news, Gov. Cuomo was speaking (again...they've featured him daily) and he posted this graphic:

89966436_10219467566252329_7052030601439739904_n.jpg

He literally said, 20% of people that are getting it are being hospitalized, it's very dangerous.

Bullshit Fox and bullshit Governor. There are 20 Million people in the state of New York. You've tested 10,000. Those tested at this point, at the beginning of the curve are those who came running forward with symptoms and were demonstrably sick. So the number looks high because your sample set is miniscule. Now if they were to go out there and randomly test 100,000 people those hospitalization numbers drop. Drastically.

No one called him out. Fox let it air. People see that, walk out the door and tell everyone "Yep, 20% of people who get it go to the hospital."

The media ABSOLUTELY is driving much of this panic by a) covering it non-stop and b) offering up misleading info. Heck the CDC is being misleading at times.

"I don’t claim to know what’s motivating the media but my god their reporting is absolutely reprehensible. They should be ashamed of themselves. They are creating a panic that is far worse than the viral outbreak. The bottom line everybody is listen to Anthony Fauci of the CDC, do what he tells ya and go about your business. That’s the story." -- Dr Drew Pinsky

What else are they gonna cover at this point? There is literally nothing else going on in America, or the world. This is THE story.

And Anthony Fauci isn't helping either. He actually called for the entire nation to shut down for two weeks. Think that might play a role in why the grocery stores are empty? I know the media is the whipping boy around here, but Trump and his band of merry idiots have as much, if not more to do with the nationwide panic surrounding this thing. And thanks to their mixed messaging and changing narratives, people are making up their own stories because the government has the citizenry convinced that they are incompetent. Fun times.

I agree......and disagree with this. This is being driven by social media. News, fake or real is at our fingertips every second of the day. Anybody basically saying what they want. The internet is driving this. Could you imagine life without our beloved World Wide Web? Could you imagine your city being shut down without being able to open up your iPad / laptop/ phone? No emails,no live messaging? No Steeler Nation? That’s when the real anarchy would begin.

So is sitting at home on your couch for a couple weeks to try to blunt that growth, flatten that curve, such a bad thing?
Couple weeks? People in positions of authority are suggesting 3 months.

So let's look at what China has ACTUALLY done to us. Butte MT, (little tiny Butte MT) features the largest per-capita St. Patty's day celebration in the U.S. Sure, compared to Boston we seem miniscule, but when you consider the size of the city, Boston can eat ***.

The county decided last night to "cancel" St. Patty's by shutting down every restaurant, bar, brewery, distillery and gym in the county. They will decide on a day to day basis if they are going to shut down hotels. Today is literally the biggest sale day of the entire year for better than 50% of our businesses. Now, I can understand why the county decided to shut down the holiday. I think it's stupid, but I get it.

However, how does the county plan on helping those 2 or 3 hundred businesses that will literally fail this year due to the loss of income over this few days? (The answer is, jack-****, btw.)

And then, let's look at the actual country wide effects these measures are going to have. In Montana alone, there are somewhere in the ballpark of 60 to 70 thousand people who will be going on unemployment. This will wipe out the state fund. The same will happen in every state in the country. When the panic finally subsided and we all see that covid-19 killed no more people than a medium to bad flu season we will already be in a situation where states are essentially bankrupt and have to dramatically increase business taxes to repay the decimate state fund.

That means that every single aspect of your day to day lives will become significantly more expensive. Your $5.50 burger just became at minimum $7.00. Your $5.00 micro brew just bumped to $6 or $6.50. Add to that the vast number of people who will transition from unemployment to full on welfare and you have a democrats wet dream. It is very likely the country will have no choice but to move to socialism in order to even begin to deal with the raw number of people needing services.

And of course, we know that is a completely losing proposition and in short order, the U.S. becomes Venezuela part deux.

All because somebody freaked the **** out about a really bad flu bug that got released in to the world by China. Who by the way has one of the lowest infection rates on the planet despite their huge population. Now, it's true. China has also ****** their economy like a $2 (soon to be $4) hoe. But their economy is state run. The commie ***** don't much care about the day to day living wage of the folks. Frankly, if a few hundred million Chinese folks die from starvation, China would chalk it up to responsible population management.

Everyone's touting S. Korea as the model here, oh their death rate is so low. Yes, it's low because they are testing a bunch of people who aren't sick and we are testing mostly people who are!

Just to be clear, the denominator isn’t the # tested, it’s the number of confirmed cases, so they’re all “sick”. The last I checked, the US mortality rate is around 2% and if you take Washington State out of the numbers it’s 1%, similar to South Korea.

And yes, I would have to agree that the fact that Spike is so obviously experiencing so much glee at the escalation of panic and mortality is disturbing.

And Wig, how many cases of Kung Flu are in Montana? How many are in Butte?

EVERYONE is to blame. The media. Trump. Fauci, who changes his statements by the day. WHO. Social media. All of it. There is no "one" whipping boy.

There isn't anything else to cover. Agreed. How they are covering it should change.

For years, people have cried for fair and objective journalism. It's tainted. It's politically driven. On both sides. And now we are seeing the REAL dangers this can have. It's one thing to show a gun range in Kentucky and purport it to be warfare in Syria. It doesn't affect me or you an iota. We go on about our daily lives.

Reporting now though affects each of us directly. Whether it's Trump or Fauci or CNN or Fox, people are reacting to what they hear. The mixed messages. And we've destroyed grocery stores to the point we look like we are living in Venezuela now.

I can't help but feel this is a massive and major turning point in history. As Wig stated, the repercussions of this national shut down are going to have wildly damaging effects long term that will change this nation forever. I don't know that we will recover and get back to where we were. I think like sheeple we are being led (maybe not willfully) into a whole new world we aren't going to like very much.

No I'm not saying this is planned or intended (could it be? Maybe). I am saying it is real, right now, and it's happening and the back side of this looks very bad for all of us.

I really do want to follow the good Doctor's advice. We need to go about our business. If this goes beyond 15 days, we are all ******. Just how I feel.

Yes but you are missing the point on that... if you only test the people who have the most likely symptoms and had exposure, like people have been doing for most of this, you miss out on all the people who have it and don’t show symptoms or have symptoms so mild they self medicate

Again if you calculated the flu death rate this exact same way, only using confirmed cases death rates are between 6% to double digits most years... last year it would have been 7.5%

Thats why every single contagious illness has an estimated case number added on to it based of RFactor spreads... and fancy algorithms and other modeling

So we don’t ignore the self treating people, which often is the majority of the cases

Novel illnesses like this dont have known contagion rates or patterns yet

The numbers are just positive tests and deaths

So the more positive tests, the lower that death rate goes, because that typically stays fairly stagnant

And yes, I would have to agree that the fact that Spike is so obviously experiencing so much glee at the escalation of panic and mortality is disturbing.

When this is all over, I wonder if he will be relieved or disappointed. Communists are not your friends.

When I start seeing Tim’s point of view, something’s gotta give.

I think Americans are also to blame though. Many of them have only The Walking Dead as a frame of reference for this sort of thing, so you get people hoarding TP and bread.

We cannot shut down society and the economy indefinitely. And what’s the green light to opening things back up? Zero new cases? And zero new cases for how long? At some point, the shut down will be doing more damage just over a much longer period of time. We need to eventually shift our focus from isolating and shutting down everything to isolating the truly at risk population and providing services for them.

If we really wanted to get people in a frenzy I think it would be a good time to air the mini-series The Stand. Did you hear they have been filming a remake of that and planned to release in 2020 on CBS all access? I bet they are rethinking that release date now.
