The Coronavirus thread

What I'm a bit worried about is it's morbidity rate, the rate at which it debilitates the body, how long it stays in the body, and it's chance for reinfection (people are getting it multiple times). I think that would do a number on even a healthy person's immune system.

That’s NOT the morbidity rate.

Couple of points for people that know absolutely nothing about science or viruses:

1. It will spread. It's a virus. No one can stop it. All you can do is keep people from coming into the country, screen and tell everyone to wash their hands and stay away from others. That's it. This is no different than getting sick from other viruses. It kills people with weak or compromised immune systems just like most flu victims. They will probably find a vaccine for it within the next 4+ months. You also can't look at the mortality rate for the virus because you are dealing with many different countries including China who is known for not doing anything truthful. Also because the majority of people who get the disease experience mild symptoms nobody knows who has gotten it and got over it without anyone knowing. There is no way to know the mortality rate for this virus. It's ignorant to even speculate on it from a scientific point of view.

2. It doesn't matter who Trump puts in charge of it the dems will ***** about it. People are crying because he didn't put a medical person in charge... ok. But you don't need a medical dr. to be in charge of administrative duties. Pence isn't working on a vaccine. He's in charge of the government's side of it. Financial resources, man-power, overlapping governmental agencies that can be brought together and cutting red tape to speed things up. Do you really want a doctor to do that? Pence is the man that can move the government. Plus he is working with the CDC and others to get them what they need. It's beyond stupid to put a medical person in charge of that.

I worked in a State Agency that adjudicates Disability claim for SSA. We had a State Director and Senior Staff in addition to a large medical services team led by a Chief State Medical Consultant. The Medical Consultant's job was to advise management on medical issues and trends or Executive-level decisions. In many cases, the doctors were the last people you would want in charge of a workgroup or initiative because of the dogmatic tunnel vision and lack of grasp of the big picture. The Director's job was to handle the internal and external messaging with advisement and input as needed or required from the Chief Medical Consultant.

Neither Fauci nor Birx would be as well-suited as Mike Pence to handle the intersection of the myriad layers that constitute the overall public response and messaging.

People clamoring for a "scientist" to be put in charge have no idea how things actually work best in practice as if this was strictly a medical problem.

Exactly. I've worked for the government and have a science background. There are reasons why doctors hire office managers. Pence is a government wonk and knows the government inside and out. If the CDC needs something done he's the guy for the job. People are just wanting to bash Trump for something. This is political.

No!

Morbidity rate = # of people with disease/population. More cases means morbidity rate goes up.

I read your comment as "No more cases causes morbidity rate to rise". Missed the comma. You are correct.

And just what do you want them to do about this? Please be specific.

Don’t tell people they can go to work if they have it. Don’t contradict what health officials are advising.

I saw this gem on FB yesterday.

Don’t tell people they can go to work if they have it. Don’t contradict what health officials are advising.

He didn't say that. Here is the quote -
"So you can't put them down in the category of the overall population in terms of this corona flu and/or virus," Trump continued. "So you just can't do that. So, if, you know, we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work. Some of them go to work, but they get better."

It's a statement of fact. You all are ridiculous.

In fact? Many doctors that wind up in government work do so because they have poor soft skills and bedside manner -- not to mention productivity. The free market directed them into government work where these soft skills mattered less. I saw it countless times.

No. The morbidity rate is a percentage of tested cases, not the sum total of deaths. It is very possible that the vast majority of people who contract the virus experience mild symptoms. Unfortunately, right now, the only people getting tested are the ones with severe symptoms.

You all would be better off having an argument with a toaster oven, just saying.

That’s NOT the morbidity rate.

Morbidity rate has several meanings. You likely looked it up quickly, saw number of people infected only, and put your 'gotcha' cap on quickly to come on here and tout your knowledge and smarts. Wrong.

Morbidity, as defined by Merriam-Webster:

mor·bid·i·ty | \ mȯr-ˈbi-də-tē \
Definition of morbidity

1: the quality or state of being morbid
especially : an attitude, quality, or state of mind marked by excessive gloom
… there must have been some strange morbidity in his nature which made him take a grim pleasure in self-torture.
— Somerset Maugham

2: a diseased state or symptom : ill health
Parasitic protozoans and helminths represent two major groups of infectious agents that are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality in human and animal populations.
— Adel A. F. Mahmoud

also : a complication or undesirable side effect following surgery or medical treatment
Because laryngectomy results in substantial functional morbidity, including the loss of the natural voice … alternative forms of treatment have been developed.
— The New England Journal of Medicine

3: the incidence of disease : the rate of illness (as in a specified population or group)
Because the young lack immune capability, the morbidity of viral upper respiratory diseases often reaches 100 percent of kittens in a litter or household.
— Margaret Reister

also : the incidence of complications or undesirable side effects following surgery or medical treatment
… radical prostatectomy in this setting … is associated with a very high morbidity.
— Phillip W. Kantoff

No it doesn’t mean several things and I certainly didn’t have to look it up. What you were originally referring to was pathogenesis.

I just gave you the proof above that it means several things. And this is directly from the CDC's website:

In practice, morbidity encompasses disease, injury, and disability. In addition, although for this lesson the term refers to the number of persons who are ill, it can also be used to describe the periods of illness that these persons experienced, or the duration of these illnesses.(4)

That’s morbidity, not morbidity rate.

Anybody willing to go on record and preemptively condemn Trump for blaming Pence for the handling of the Corona Virus?

Bold prediction: This happens and Trump has a different VP candidate for 2020.

Pence is the perfect straight man to handle communicating to the public in a calm, measured way. Maybe not the best formula though to combat a hot shot VP pick on the D-side. If Trump goes Nikki Haley, it won't be because Pence is blamed for poor Corona administration.

You already hear the media whining about only white males left on the stage. They are laying the groundwork for Michele, Hillary, or Stacey Abrams on the ticket. Trump may indeed have to think long and hard about Nikki Haley in that case. But, he is otherwise loyal and will stand by his man as he did with Lewandowski as one example.

Trump isn't changing his VP. It would appear to be what it is... pandering if he took Pence off the ticket. Nobody cares about the VP in a presidential race anyway. Obama wasn't elected because of Biden. Trump wasn't elected because of Pence. Most Americans can't even name the VPs of any administration. It's a non-issue.

While I agree in general Vader, let me throw this at you; Biden picks Hillary to be his VP. Biden is showing signs of senility or dementia and for the 'good of the country', will eventually step down due to it; and voila! there's your Madame President that so many tards think should be President right now.

New York Governor Cuomo declares state of emergency as coronavirus cases rise to 76 after infected taxi driver walked in to Queens hospital and potentially infected 40 doctors and nurses

Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency in New York, with 76 residents testing positive to coronavirus.

The declaration came Saturday afternoon, with the governor revealing the number of cases in the state has almost doubled in the past 24 hours alone. On Friday, 44 people were confirmed to have the disease.

'We have now been testing around the clock,' Cuomo stated at a press conference, revealing that the number of cases in Westchester County has ballooned to 57.

23 new cases in the county have been uncovered since Friday, and all are related to the New Rochelle lawyer who was diagnosed as the state's first case earlier this week.

"We know a lot of people are going to get it."

There are now also 11 cases in New York City - up seven from yesterday.

Disturbingly, there are also signs of wider spread, with two cases now confirmed in Saratoga County in the northeast of the state - hundreds of miles away from any other cases.

Relatives of passengers on coronavirus-hit Grand Princess cruise stranded off San Francisco plead for it to be evacuated - as one traveler is airlifted off due to medical emergency

At least 21 people on the Grand Princess have contracted Covid-19 - just under half the number of those tested. California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, is now refusing to allow the vessel to dock in San Francisco.

Pence, Netanyahu, Hundreds Of Members Of Congress Went To Conference Attended By 2 People Who Tested Positive For Coronavirus

Vice President Mike Pence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and hundreds of members of Congress attended a conference last month along with at least two people who have tested positive for a novel strain of coronavirus that has killed more than 3,000 people across the globe.

“We have confirmed that at least two Policy Conference attendees from New York have tested positive for the Coronavirus,” the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, said in a statement on Twitter.

Ban the fans!

NBA tells teams to plan for empty arenas

NEW YORK - - The NBA wants its teams to prepare to play games without fans if necessary because of the coronavirus crisis, but LeBron James already says he won’t play basketball in an empty arena.

The league circulated a memo to its teams Friday telling them to prepare in case it becomes necessary to play games without fans or media, as sports leagues in Europe have already done. The memo detailed potential actions that teams might need to take “if it were to become necessary to play a game with only essential staff present.”

But when James was asked about that possibility the NBA’s leading active scorer was definitive.

“We play games without the fans? Nah, that’s impossible,” James said. “I ain’t playing if I ain’t got the fans in the crowd."

‘Get ready’: Italian doctors warn Europe of coronavirus impact on hospitals

‘It will be tough’, British doctor admits after Italian experts warn one in 10 of those infected need intensive care

Italian doctors have warned medics across Europe to “get ready” for coronavirus in a letter revealing up to 10 per cent of all those infected with coronavirus need intensive care, with hospitals becoming overwhelmed.

The letter, seen by The Independent, reveals the scale of the impact on hospitals in Italy where 5,883 patients have been infected with the virus and 233 people have died as of 6pm on Saturday.

They said Italian hospitals had seen “a very high” number of intensive care patients who were admitted “almost entirely” for severe lung failure caused by the virus and needing ventilators to help them breathe.

Washington state coronavirus cases top 100, including 16 deaths

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Washington state topped 100 on Saturday, including 16 deaths.

The Washington State Department of Health says that at least 102 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Seventy-one of the cases and fifteen deaths were confirmed in King County. Most of the deaths have been linked to the Life Care nursing facility in Kirkland. The center is scheduled to hold a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The other death occurred in Snohomish County, which has 27 coronavirus cases.
