When asked if hundreds of thousands of Americans could die from coronavirus, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said “it could happen, and it could be worse."

Fauci's comments were made this morning on CNN’s “State of the Union” where he also discussed how the challenge "is to try and make that not happen.”

“If we go about our daily lives and not worry about everything” then the death toll will be high," Fauci said. “People sometimes think that I’m overreacting. I like it when people are thinking I’m overreacting because that means we’re doing it just right.”

As of Sunday morning, at least 2,815 people in 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have tested positive for coronavirus in the United States, and at least 59 patients with the virus have died.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) criticized the federal government’s response to the coronavirus and the “inconsistent” messaging from the federal government. She called on President Trump “to step back and appoint one of our public health officials to be the spokesman” and suggested Dr. Anthony Fauci serve as the spokesperson and give daily briefings on the virus.

Collins said, “We are making progress at the federal level, but I am not satisfied with the response. I think that the messaging at the federal level has been inconsistent. And when you’re dealing with a novel virus like this, it’s very important that health professionals be out front, and that there be a consistent message. We also, in some parts of the country, are experiencing shortages of tests.”

She added, “I would like the president to step back and appoint one of our public health officials to be the spokesman as we go through dealing with this novel virus. My suggestion would be that Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has been around for decades, is such a well-regarded infectious disease specialist, has dealt with everything from AIDS to the Zika virus and H1N1 flu be the public face for the federal government. I believe he should give a briefing at the same time each day to update the American people and to also make sure that the messaging is consistent.”

I ordered groceries from Amazon this morning. I’m not dealing with long lines, bare shelves and panictards fighting, crying and screaming over bread and milk.

The Chinese numbers are slowing. Other countries will ramp up, then slow. What if China grossly under-reported the number of mild cases?

Why are NYC schools still open? What is the calculus there?

This is a problem with all too many companies in this country. Before retiring, I was a mid-level manager for a major health insurance company, working in one of their clinics. If I got sick it was no big deal, I was salaried, and if I was sick, I simply stayed home.
Those that I managed had to use vacation time if they called off sick, and if all of their time was used up for the year they would lose all compensation by staying home. Lots of people went to work sick at the end of the calendar year, because staying home meant no paycheck.

Ok here's one. My daughter attends Georgia Tech. Two days ago they told all the students to move out, that they were going to distance learning for the rest of the semester. Kids packed up and moved out. Some put their stuff in storage facilities.Turned in their keys. Bought plane tickets home all over the US and the world. The next day they told them OOPS sorry we may not go to distance learning. Leave for two weeks while we make up our minds. But don't move out.

What a cluster.
