The Coronavirus thread

The lower estimates are very much related to the social distancing and stay at home orders in my opinion. Had we done nothing our Hospitals would be a **** show now like NYC is turning into. As a parent of a Nurse currently on a COVID 19 ward in Cincinnati I am extremely grateful for the proactive measures taken by Mike Dewine in Ohio. We are fairing much much better than the states around us are because he did this much earlier than most. Infection rates are highest among our frontline healthcare workers and that scares the **** out of me for my daughter particularly as I have mentioned she is a type 1 diabetic. Two days ago they had no positive cases on her floor now she will have a floor full tonight. Please keep her in your prayers. That being said it does make sense that HC workers have a higher infection rate as they have a much higher opportunity to be exposed. My company is allowing me to do all my sales calls virtually or to reschedule if they don't want a virtual appointment without taking away my leads. Nurses can't do that, If this surges much more she will have to start working longer hours and risk more exposure and the hospital will run out of ICU beds and Vents this is when it goes from being just the flu to the **** hitting and the fan.

I apologize if I seem to repeat myself but I truly don't think some are grasping the problem we face from this without flattening the curve. If it did not require so many ventilators and induced comas for many of the severe cases you wouldn't be seeing any where near the same reaction. The flu has a much lower rate of Vents being needed mainly because we have some very good treatment options and history of how to deal with it and it is not hitting all at once.

So I will apologize once again but it hits very close to home for me. I am making my daughter a dinner to take for her 12 hour overnight shift right now. Luckily she has 7 straight days off in a row after tonight unless they go to mandatory overtime. If they do she will be making some serious bank at 3 times base pay plus shift differential.

Flatten the curve theory was never built for long term use... it isn’t meant to eradicate viruses that have gone worldwide... it’s meant to simply create a swath of immune individuals to act as a buffer and draw out the peak

Its over... extending it too long risks adverse effects that have zilch to do with economics... you keep high risks in linited isolation then open up the general public to infection hoping that the majority of the cases will be the mildest and least symptomatic strains creating herd immunity

Pushing lockdown past the summer is a horrible idea...

Assuming 20 days for recovery we should have several generations of immune persons now... especially with undocumented cases...

This is just math... the leading virologist in the UK said when they had 2000 confirmed cases they had about a million altogether because of the spread factor

A lot of people have it or had it already... the vast majority won’t show symptoms... the severity is expected to be in the low single digits once the estimated cases are factored in

Yes we needed to keep a handle on the initial uncontrolled spread, but any long break creates a huge dip in the bell curve. Standard social distancing in warm months is going to be fine...this virus hasn’t shown the same spread factors in warm climates yet... most die much quicker in warm temps...

No one that I'm aware of is comparing H1N1 to CV19 saying "they are the same illness." We are comparing them because they are both epidemics that nations/countries have to respond to. Why does this escape you? It's like comparing the nation's response to an Ebola outbreak and CV19. No one is comparing them as "the same" virus. Good lord.

Both H1N1 and CV19 are deadly. Both were epidemics. Both handled differently by different administrations. And to date, H1N1 killed more. CV19 may surpass that, but so far....right now, H1N1 killed more Americans.

Yes, we should compare the responses. We are setting an incredibly dangerous and ugly precedent. IF we shut the country down now as we have, imagine (as has been said) when the next virus comes. Will we knee-jerk react the same way because "maybe" it could kill us all? Meanwhile, as Steeltime has pointed out, the "cure" we have administered may be FAR more deadly.

This is absolutely a meaningful discussion that is being held EVERYWHERE. Is the cure worth it?

As far as the estimates dropping, good Lord I've posted them. Try reading.

The British study that was so doom and gloom was also walked back last week.

If you haven't noticed lower estimates you aren't doing your homework.

And you call me daft!

Due to several reasons, not the least of which is limited testing, nobody knows how many cases there are. Changing the denominator changes the percentage, it doesn’t change the number of deaths. .66% with a denominator of 16 million is worse than 1.38% with a denominator of 7 million.

The Trump administration is talking about number of deaths, not percentages.

Florida just shut down for 30 days

Order goes into effect midnight Thurs

Just made a run to the vape shop, they mixed me up a 6 month supply big bottle of my favorite juice, just in case

As was said above, this really is about GOVERNMENT. You seem to want to pass the buck. NO.

Facts:
The masks were depleted when H1N1 hit, under Obama.
His Administration was told in 2009-2010 to replenish them.
His Administration spent the next 6-7 years NOT replenishing them.
Trump took office.
Trump did not replenish them either.

The article correctly points out the origination of the problem: Obama
The article correctly points out WHY it remained a problem: Obama ignored orders from TWO different organizations to replenish the stockpile

What we don't know: Was Trump aware? From 2016, on, is this Ben Carson's fault for not immediately cleaning up Obama's mess? I'm not sure.

But please don't kick the can down the road without giving due credit to Bathhouse Barry for starting this **** and allowing it to continue. And yes, shame on the rest of the Administrations for not jumping all over cleaning up Obama's **** up.

Hey,thanks for that little caps on lesson Tim.
To use your own analogy that I seem to want to pass " the buck ". We all know the bucks stops at the top. They've had over 3 years to replace them. They didn't. That's the bottom line. You want me to acknowledge the fact that Barry ****** up by not replacing them. Of course he did. Happy? Last time I looked he's not in power.

I heard there is a connection between smokers, vapers and the worst cases of Corona Virus. You be careful there Spike. Just want to make sure you're aware, take care of yourself and don't burden the hospital system.

And once again, you're operating with numbers you have no concrete evidence to believe in. TODAY you believe .66% is the end all be all. Last week it was 3.2% and sometimes 1.38% or whatever numbers you were throwing about. As they change the numbers, ALL of this changes and thus has been my point. No one here, not even Fauci, can tell you what this is going to do and what the numbers are going to be. They change daily due to all of the different factors involved with ever-changing data - testing, deaths, cases that go undetected, etc etc and etc.

The only facts we know are #s who have died and #s who have tested positive. That is it. And until this thing is over, you and anyone else spewing about %s that you "believe in" is speaking out of his or her ***. Those in charge are letting us know what they know daily. And those numbers change...daily. Because they also...don't know.

Too bad. Sorry to hear that. Don't tell Trog. He has assured us all that it is not a problem.

No biggie was just a seasonal second job baggage handling from cruise ships to airport, sure I’ll get called next season if and when this blows over.

I'll still be working OT in job no.2, since job one is toast for a few months. I already have a paper for when/if I get pulled over..

You have repeatedly harped on the fact that COVID has a much higher death rate than other flu viruses. But in acknowledging we have literally no idea as to the number of infected, you are acknowledging that any statement about fatality rate is pure fiction. Make believe.

If as you say (correctly) we don't know the number of cases, and in fact at this point have no idea since we are not testing randomly, then it is highly questionable to make orders with massive, devastating fallout (shutting down all commerce for two months for example, even among those who are under 50 and in good health) based on the belief that the purported but fictional death rate is "x" percent of the infected.

Unpossible. Trog assured me that masks don't work, and in fact make the situation worse. So China and South Korea should have mass graves by now for the legion of dead due to COVID and mask use.

Or maybe masks work and we have been lied to. Again.

The Czech Republic have very few cases, and Hungary is in even better shape (not sure what they're doing, would be nice for Tibs to check in and let us know how he's doing); and I just read that Austria is mandating (in some form) that everybody out in public has to wear a mask. Hmm.

Hmm. You have been ringing the panic bell for several weeks now.

I presume you know that vaping or smoking is a known risk factor for making any reaction to infection worse ... right?

Smoking and vaping have harmful effects on the body, including making it harder for the body to fight infections. This includes serious infections like COVID-19 (also called coronavirus). Learn how smoking and vaping can put your body at a higher risk of catching COVID-19 and how to quit smoking and vaping to protect yourself and others.

People were so much smarter back then

The Czech Republic have very few cases, and Hungary is in even better shape (not sure what they're doing) ...

Hungary has a border that they actually protect and hundreds of miles of walls to keep out immigrants not actually welcomed to the country.

Everything Trump ran on in 2016 - strong borders, border wall, bringing manufacturing back to America, distrust of China, protecting our intellectual property from more Chinese theft, control over immigration, everything - is playing out before us in real time.

Jagr has all the diseases in the Czech Republic.

Another hmm. Interesting point.

And about those masks, some people are just not buying it (vid is pretty heartbreaking):

We are suppling them. Yes there is a tier list. N95 or equivalent, surgical masks, cloth and down and down. We would never tell someone when we didn’t have supplies not to wear their own. As a safety person, our stance is use ours....your fit tested for them, we know the quality, and they work. If we can’t provide and you got something ....by all means. **** you got more you can get.

Let me add this. (If true). Complete **** for brains organization. First your not protecting your staff, and patients. Ok you ain’t got the POE but they do. “Wear that ****”. Second, we don’t have ******* staff WTF would they want to remove an abled body. We are begging for folks.

And you guys think Tibs is a dummy..... He lives within his wall protected country while telling us our country shouldn't have one. I bet when he plays soccer, he tells the other team they don't need a goalie. Genius!
