The Offseason is On now!

They can save roughly another 15m in extending Watt, and another 16ish by cutting Patterson, Holcomb, and Larry O. They could be BIG spenders in FA.

Other than our own guys, these are guys I look at throwing some money at:

Milton Williams DL Eagles
Osa Odighizuwa DL Cowboys
Tershawn Wharton DL Chiefs
Paulson Adebo CB Saints
Charvarius Ward CB 49ers
Byron Murphy CB Vikings

It's slim pickings for WR, TE, RB...So I look to the draft for those positions.

That's a good list, thanks for the insight.

I know that the QBs available don't seem to give much separation to what we would get with Justin Fields in the mix. I don't see an immediate money grab by a big name QB. That could change dramatically, of course but I see a steady ship in that regards. As Free Agency plays out, QB-ing could change dramatically.

We really don't have a lot of cap space when you look at who still needs to get paid. Watt - new contract; GP - new contract; QB - new contract and eventually paying some QB $40 million+, etc.

I hope that $40mil doesn't happen till next year's drafted QB is near end of his rookie deal.................. and looking like a 50+ mil future HOFer.

Well, that’s nice amount of cap space with more to be gained.
I’d explore some trades that’s for damn sure. I’d start with seeing if there’s a market for the much over payed Minkah. Not worth anywhere near what they’re paying him.
Now we will see just how good a GM Omar really is. Personally I’d rather see Andy Weidel be the GM and kick Omar back to what he does best, handling the cap.
It kinda looks like Omar wants much more cap space as a GM than Colbert did....must be a reason; hopefully this will bear fruits this season.

Rumors that we may try to bring in Daniel Jones...

That makes me super sad that we didnt try to explore the Giants thinking about moving him and Barkley back in 21... we could have gotten them for a reasonable offer... instead we spent a first on Harris, then the next years first on pickett... Jones sitting a year would have done wonders for him... he wouldnt have had a year good enough that they had to give him that outlandish extension he couldnt live up to...
and Barkley is just better than Harris.. always was...

Probably could have gotten them for less, but certainly could have for that first.. and then the next year we wouldnt have used the first on Pickett...

Is Poni the source?

I don't want Barkley behind this line, it's a waste of his talent. I've always been a fan of his, great guy and teammate, and he deserves to be on a team who actually wants to win championships.

I hear yaz Badcat, Barkley would be wasted here.

Don’t lose hope though, law of averages say that this coming year our OL should improve quite a bit. They need an OT because hanging all hope on Jones instantly being top notch and Fautanu with injury prone……… I just hope a plan B is available, if needed.

I don’t have a lot of faith in Pat Meyers.

Is Poni the source?
I just don’t trust “rumors” anymore. Media is more unreliable than ever before. If it did come from Poni, expect the opposite.

I don’t think Jones upgrades the room. Not even sure I want that guy as a backup.

Just underwhelming options outside of perhaps Darnold….

With Pat Meyers at the helm of our OL, we will need a QB with pocket awareness and more importantly escapability. We will need a RB with vision, who can catch, pass block and is highly durable as he will undoubtedly get hit in the backfield on 50% of the plays run in this scheme.
We definitely need a new OT as our OL coach has a career LT who was drafted to play RT (Fautanu) and a raw college LT who now has played more games at RT than college starts at LT (Jones). It behooves me to believe that this coach can coach up any player at any position as has been displayed by the rookie/1st years being better than the 2nd year growth in a few examples of veterans and Jones.
Fautanu played 29 games at LT in college for a very good offense.
Jones played 19 at LT at Georgia and now has 26 starts at RT in the NFL. So what will we do? We will start BOTH players where they have the least experience.
Roger Rosengarten played most all of his starts in college at RT, started all year for the Rats AT RT and did better than either of our OTs. He was drafted at #62.
I would feel better right now starting Fautanu at LT and letting our 6’-8”, 315# TE (who has more career experience as a blocker than a pass catcher) at RT. That is sad.
Seumalo, Daniel’s and Cole all have played worse in our system. Dotson became an all-pro in a better system (I don’t believe it had anything to do with switching sides).
We have an antiquated system which is inherently predictable. Until that is fixed, no QB, RB or OL is gonna look good here, IMO.

That’s just our reality now.

Excellent post keslerclan and thanks for all your great ones along the way.

Season End had Tomlin speaking of big change needed. Not a dang thing has happened except the loss of two of the better coaches for the team. Yes we brought in a new coach who does have good pedigree, but our biggest weakness of sub-coaches is Pat Meyer, and here we are with him leading players playing in the wrong spots. It goes back his entire time here, nothing has improved or been coached up.

At minimum, I thought for sure the OL coach would be gone……………….. I, as many here have been “hood-winked”.

Extending Watt will lower his 30m cap hit. I don't think they plan on extending GP (as much as I hate it), and there isn't a QB out there for US worth $40m. With 55m right now, extending Watt, and cutting the above mentioned players, that brings it to around 85m. That's plenty. And we are finally free of the dead cap from years and years and years of bad restructuring.
I hear you but they can't get into cap hell by signing a bunch of top end free agents as they will need to pay a QB top dollar hopefully within 2 or 3 years unless they get lucky enough to have a terrible season and draft one high. Top WR's are now going for 30+. If they sign GP (probably a mistake) and say another legit WR2, that is a lot of capital. They are OK right now but need to plan for the future as well. My guess is they go into the season with at least $10 million (and maybe more) for the unseen injuries during the season and to hopefully carry over some of the capital to next year.

Keep in mind, I have changed my projection for a Justin Fields signing based on several reports (DK sports being one of them).

I think it’s going to take (low side) 17 mil to (high side) 24 mil to sign him on a 2-year deal. That initially projected 10mil / yr X 2 has grown. Reality is, he’s a start NFL caliber QB who improved his value in his short time here.

This cap increase will affect everything, agents know this as well. Can’t blame Fields, it’s a short career.

EDIT: 50-65% of full contract will need to be guaranteed.

So negative. I will take a more optimistic look.
The Steelers can probably afford a few more upgrades at key positions.
Then we can watch as they play the same Off and Def they have for the last 10 years. Same results but better people doing it
Fitzpatrick says hi. 👋

10M is backup qb money these days. Yea. Fields can probably fetch 17 or more.

You're prob looking at something similar to Geno Smith contract. I know I've mentioned it before, he's the lowest paid non-rookie starter. 3 year 75 mil.

agree, his market will be 20 to 25M probably

I had been thinking a 2-year, $15 million per deal with some other incentives. They definitely need to name him the starter as he apparently wants and I see nothing wrong with that. Give him the entire year (unless he really sucks) as the starter and go from there.

the reason is Colbert had a franchise QB, Kahn has Skylar, Heisenberg's wife.

Khan also isn’t still paying Tuitt 🤣

Can’t remember the last time we only had like 46k in dead money and were rolling around 7 million unused from the previous season

That cap number should get some more room if they just make a few more intelligent cuts.

Maybe Khan has plans of actually spending in FA again unlike Colbert who only would circle
The recycle bin after the rest of the league was done shopping.

that Tuitt situation, as well as Shazier's were really tragic

Even QB needy teams probably don't see him as a certain starter like Geno Smith was for Seattle. Smith earned that contract with his play. I'm not sure Fields has played at a $20 million level yet.
with incentives to get there
